If anything at all one should look at X.org since XFree86 is pretty much dead. Dave has provided some libraries of X.org but didn't release a full X.org build -- probably because of the problems you mentioned.

Have a look at my site at http://www.os2world.com/os2files/. Be warned though that XFree86/OS2 is outdated now. The latest available version is 4.5.0 and does not support current video adapters.

Alternatively, you could try using Hoblink X11 that comes with eCS. It's an X11 server that runs under PM and can even display X windows seemlessly. However, it's based on an older version of the X protocol and won't support some of the fancier font stuff of today, for instance.

From what I've been told, the following applies:

- Willibald's physician told him that if he continued to work so much, he wouldn't live much longer.

- According to Thorolf, his position is that there's nobody with the necessary skill set to continue the project and that the project will be obsolete anyway since driver architecture has changed.

I guess it depends on which method you want to use. Doesn't Injoy only support IPSec?

Open Bounties / Re: QT 4.x framework Port

I guess I should clarify that the qt4 builds of smplayer start video playback and then lose the video at about 4 seconds into playback.

That certainly does not qualify as "working" here.

That is similar to what I'm experiencing, although it occurs immediately here. What happens if you

- choose "Always" from the Video > Stay on top menu
- set the video output to "kva (slow)" or something like that

Could you try those seperately?

Could you please report the problem to Silvan with details about your system (OS, video driver, SMPlayer settings)?

Storage / Re: OS/2 - Linux and JFS
2009.12.28, 12:51:04
It is possible to access the data with another user. Without changes, the filesystem does not contain any user rights information. So you need to apply proper owner and rights info with suitable chown / chmod commands to the drive, e.g.:

chown -R username:username /mnt/jfsdrive
find /mnt/jfsdrive/ -ftype d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find /mnt/jfsdrive/ -ftype f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

Linux will update the user rights info without damaging the data. The tedious thing about it is that everytime OS/2 has written a new file to the file system, you will need to update its access rights.

I don't know about the I13X flag.

Anyway, I tried a large number of instructions from different howtos and was unable to start the IBM Bootmanager from Grub1 or Grub2. Furthermore, installing Grub2 to the PBR was not possible either. The installation script's output suggested that the installation worked but it apparently didn't. That's a known problem, at least with Ubuntu 9.10.

On the other hand, I can load Ubuntu 9.10 located on an ext4 drive with Grub1 installed to its PBR just fine.
#23
This problem is caused by a bug in Grub2. Currently, Grub2 cannot be installed to a partition, only to the MBR.

There are the following scenarios:

* On systems with disks < 512GB, you should be able to install Grub2 to the MBR and boot OS/2 via the IBM Bootmanager using the chainloader option. Or you use the IBM Bootmanager as the main boot manager and install Grub1 in the Linux partition.

* On disks >512GB, OS/2 does not support the correct geometry. You can still use the IBM Bootmanager and install Grub 1 in the Linux partition.

I suggest that you actually read postings before responding. Even though it's outdated now, having Golden Code's source code would still have helped with a number of implementation issues. As for it being so buggy judging from my own experience their release was a lot less problematic than the Innotek one. But anyway, the main issue is man-power -- as always. This could only be solved with massive funding. And if it were available, there would still be the issue of finding enough developers who have the right skill set and are available. Well, I'd love to be proven wrong but for now I'd rather be realistic.

Regarding OpenJDK: It seems works quite nicely on the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10, also in Firefox 3.5.

Well, face it, folks. OS/2 will not see another native port of Java. Golden Code will not provide the source of their native port and resources are few. However, the port of Flash 10 will result in a much updated Odin. This should make creating and updating an Odin-based port possible--and hopefully also ironing out the issues that existed with Innotek's Java ports.

Pete,

Could you please try SMPlayer beta 2 with the video output set to the slower kva variant that uses DIVE? Doing so pretty much fixed all of my display problems with the current beta. It seems that the culprit is output via SNAP overlay.

Serenity/Mensys have been working on creating a new product called "eComServer" for a while. It's eCS with the WSeB components on top. AFAIK it's at the level of ACP2 plus fixes.

Also, I wonder often if the LGPL is being violated (even slightly) in this project.

As far as I know the source code for OOo for OS/2 is always submitted to the OOo code repository. Feel free to download it and try to build it yourself. What is not included is the WPS integration package which is an add-on and not part of the original product.

BTW, I can tell you officially that Mensys does not make money with this. All income from the subscription has been used to fund development and building so far.

Looks like a flaw in the authentification system to me. Just contact Mensys and point out the situation.

Article Discussions / Qt 4 beta 3 released
2009.10.19, 17:10:45
Silvan Scherrer and Dmitry A. Kuminov have released the third beta of the port of the Qt 4 application framework to OS/2 and eComStation, i.e., version 4.5.1 beta 3. The new release comes with Qt Linguist, a tool for easy translation of Qt applications to other languages, and considerable improvements in the areas of font support and process handling. With this, Qt 4 for OS/2 and eComStation is nearing completion.
