`Java Is Finally Free and Open`

So, how long before one is able to have (IBM's Lotus Notes 8.0, Lotus SameTime 8.0 and Lotus Symphony 1.0) run on OS/2, all needing SWT to be able to do this?.

Also, there having been a "bounty" for a port of Lotus Notes 8.0 to OS/2... Who will thus be in a position to claim this bounty!

It might even work with SWTSwing which I used to run Eclipse, Azureus and some other apps on OS/2 that require SWT.
The big stopper so far was our old Java Runtime (1.4.1 or 1.4.2 at best) as the newer apps all require at least Java 1.5+!
I only did some short tests with the Java 1.5.07 that some have running but my experience wasn't very good (so far).

Thanks Paul for your advice. Do you suggest a HP laser printer instead of a Samsung or a Brother one?

I've got an OKI C5450DN (Duplex + Network; supports PCL6 and PS3) color laser printer (actually it's an LED printer) which works with the PPD file from OKI and IBMs Postscript package. I created a new printer driver with the PPD and the Postscript package. The latest postscript package had an issue...but the previous release worked - don't know what went wrong as I created the driver 2 years ago. ;)

The printer is no longer available but there are newer models available.
It's a great printer and the newer models also had good critics in reviews on the german druckerchannel.de website.

I've not yet tried to use the printer with CUPS but I might try it once I unpack the rest of my hardware (I just relocated and most of my stuff is still in packing cases).

Looks pretty much like my Azureus 2.5.0.4 "hack" Christian mentioned on the first page.
Here you find a picture (more pictures using different Java "Look and Feels") are available at the link (remove the filename.
The image shows the german text on labels, menu,.. but you can change the language at the configuration dialog:
http://www.juergen-ulbts.de/Sonstiges/Java/AzureusSWTSwing/Azureus2504_on_eCS20_02_using_SWTSwing_2007-08-01.jpg

It should be possible to create a simple GUI for ctorrent using WDSibyl (Borland Delphi like IDE):

Only some pretty old ELSA Winner Office was able to use more then just two displays I think.
Currently I think your best chance is to get one of these Matrox Dual/TrippleHead2Go boxes.
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/

The big question is: Does the box automatically use a default setting to display one big screen (output of the graphic card) on 2 or 3 screens connected to the Matrox GXM-Box or is the Matrox software needed to configurate the box?

Some relevant links:
http://www.juergen-ulbts.de/content/projects/video_mpeg/projectx.en.html

Project x is ported to eCS by Juergen Ulbts. I really don't quite understand what it does, but it could handle media streams and is capable of limited editing (cuttting) of mpeg-files.

You can use it to cut out commercial breaks and you can also use it to convert MPEG2-TS (Transport Streams) to compliant MPEG2 that you can use in your DVD-Player (not every player likes Transport Streams).
The Flash-Demo on my website shows you how to cut commercial breaks out of your video file.

Project X can also be used with Emperoar:
http://www.s-t.de/emperoar/

Roland Brill ("rbri" on the Emperoar Forum) has an updated version of Project X on his website, so you might look there as well:
http://www.rbri.de/projectx/projectx.html

Roland is posting informations about his Project X builds on the Emperoar Forum:

Strange to support the development of the 3d programming enviroment when we still have no 3d support.  Perhaps someone at IBM could "leak" a copy of the very outdated open GL HW accelerate drivers they created and let someone go to town on them =)
Yeah!!!  Open GL 1.1!!!

Well IBM did leak it several years ago on one of their FTP-Servers. :D

And maybe I also have leaked it - see this message and also my follow-up:

Hi!
There nothing special to do in VPC2007.
Select your eCS Installation and press edit.
At the setup dialog make sure that the "Network" row shows "Number of Network Adapters: 1"
Select drop down List for "Adapter 1:" and choose your primary network card of your Windows machine that is used to access the internet.
I assume you have some kind of router via a Network card and don't use a modem (dail-up) connection.

That's basically all you need to do in VPC.
In eCS 1.2/2.0 you need to setup your network and I think that might be your problem.

Note: I translated the VPC setting text from german to english, so the text you might see on your english version might not match my translation to 100%.

Ok, now to the setup of eCS 2.0 (I've got Beta4 [english] installed inside VP2007)

Click on "System Setup" --> "Network" --> "Adapters and Protocols"

At the "Multi-Protocol Transport Services" click on "Configure MPTS"
The next screen shows some options. Normally "LAN adapters and protocols" should be selected.
If not select it and then click the "Configure" button.

The interesting stuff is the text box no. 3.
Here the following is installed:

Intel 2104x/2114x 10/100 mbps Ethernet Controller.....
  1 - IBM OS/2 NETBIOS
  0 - IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP
  0 - IBM TCP/IP

Important is "IBM TCP/IP" as this is needed if you want to connect to the internet. The other two are for the network shares.
If you don't have this setup click OK and at the next screen "Save", finally "Close".
When asked to save the updates to the CONFIG.SYS click again "Save" and follow the rest (clicking OK several times).

The next step involves the TCP/IP setup.
Click on "System Setup" --> "Network" --> "TCP/IP" --> "TCP/IP Configuration"
I've got it running here with DHCP but you may need to specify the IP and also the routing information manually.
As I don't know how your Network and Internet access works I can't really help.

As Steve already wrote on the normal snap os2 newsgroup, they can't release the Matrox driver.
As SciTech as been ATI's development partner, they had an NDA for the ATI driver stuff.
The question is now, can they release the ATI stuff now as AMD/ATI has opened the access to the chipset documentation?
Intel has also some open documents of their integrated graphics engine, so it might be possible to add them as well.

As SciTech had always problems with nVidia the non-team player, I would guess that they can release those drivers. The information needed came from X-driver sources as far as I know.
Then there is the old stuff, that was already part of the open SNAP DDK in April 2004 (SNAP 2.3r14).

A quick look into that package tells me the following driver where included in that release:
-3dfx (TDFX_BANSHEE, TDFX_VOODOO3, TDFX_VOODOO4, TDFX_VOODOO5)
-VESA
-IBM VGA

Some MESA-3D (v3.5) stuff is also included.

The main problem that Lotus Symphony or Notes are not working is the lack of a current Java Runtime (1.6).
There is the Java 1.5.0_07 hack but I wasn't very successfull when I tried to get Eclipse 3.3 (which needs Java 1.5) running with the Eclipse on Swing plugin.
I also wasn't able to use Azureus 3.x which also needs Java >=1.5.0.

Maybe I can get the above stuff working when I spend enough time on it, but there are far more interesting projects I would like to work on.

For Lotus Notes I have to say that Notes is too big and too ugly to be usefull. There are Groupware solutions available that seem to be far better to use.

I've done some Open-Xchange development within the last 3 years. The old OX Server 5 (currently v0.8.6-x) code is very ugly and it's no fun working on it as it's totally undocumented Java code, but I is possible to get it working on OS/2 is you spend some time on it. It's also VERY stable!

The upcoming new OX 6 (totally rewritten by 1&1 - a big german internet provider) looks goods but some functionality is missing at the moment. The new OX was first released as Hosting Edition one year ago but there is also the Express Edition available.

VIA Announces Strategic Open Source Driver Development Initiative
VIA to provide vehicle for improved collaboration with Open Source community with opening of official VIA Linux Website

Austin, Texas, 8 April 2008 – Today at the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit, VIA Technologies, Inc., a leading innovator of power efficient x86 processor platforms, announced a new initiative to improve support for the Open Source development community.

As the first step in this initiative, VIA will open its official VIA Linux website at http://linux.via.com.tw/ this month. The site will initially host drivers, technical documentation, source code, and information regarding the VIA CN700, CX700/M, CN896 and the new VIA VX800 chipsets, with plans to add official forums and support for more products later on in the year.

Over the following months, VIA will work with the community to enable 2D, 3D and video playback acceleration to ensure the best possible Open Source experience on VIA Processor Platforms.

To further improve cooperation with the community, VIA will also adhere to a regular quarterly release schedule that is aligned with kernel changes and release of major Linux distributions. In addition, beta releases will be issued on the site as needed, and a bug report and tracking feature will also be integrated.

"This announcement is the first step in the implementation of our new initiative to better serve the needs of the Open Source community," commented Richard Brown, Vice President of Corporate Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. "We are strongly committed to improving the levels of collaboration with the community and adopting a more consistent approach across VIA Processor Platform technologies."

"We are delighted that VIA has announced its commitment to enhance support for the Linux and Open Source community," commented Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. "This action will open up exciting new opportunities for accelerating open source innovation around VIA platforms and ultimately delivering a better user experience."

The drivers and documentation will be available later this month on:

SNAP does not support my current chipset (7600GT) and as far as I know, Panorama cant do hardware overlay because its a VESA only driver, therefore, no hardware acceleration at all.

Panorama can't do overlay and Dual/Multi-Head but it's much faster than SNAPs GenGRADD.
As nVidia hasn't started to open their specs you won't see much nVidia GeForce support in OpenSNAP I guess.

I am most excited for the hardware overlay so video playback can not eat my CPU, and I can benefit from all the post-proc features my chipset supports (hello Desktop Painter, how I have missed you!)

I also would like to be able to scroll large windows without lag and 99.9% CPU usage, more or less most of my excitement over this news :)

As I said scolling without lag for unsupported cards use: Panorama

Also, this gives me hope for a port of OpenGL to the OS/2 platform again, something we desperately need.
I still have the copy of the Hardware Accelerated OpenGL Toolkit here. ;)
Using this is not really legal but since it's abandonware I would actually ignore this obstacle.

For details look in this thread and this message as starting point:

As reported bugs for Golden Code Java 1.4.1 are also not fixed (sound issues, large file support using NIO,...) this can also be called abandonware.

The best would be if GC opens their code to help to port newer Java versions like 1.6 and the upcoming 1.7 but obviously that's something they don't want to.
I also don't think that it helps GC to sit on their code to make GC Java 1.4.1 sell better.
Java 1.4 is dead. I see it but GC doesn't.

It costs more and more of my (free) time to port back newer Java applications to Java 1.4 as I did in the past with Azureus 2.x, Eclipse 3.2.x, Commonist 0.3.17 (http://djini.de/software/commonist/) and some other tools.
If the sources are not available it's even harder to do.

Emulators / Re: Virtual PC works for OS/2

RAID is a problem as you still need drivers for the controller. You can use the config stuff the BIOS of the controller offers but as far as I know you then need drivers for the controller on the OS you want to use this RAID config with.
We are talking about 3ware and other "real" hardware controllers right?

Ok, I've uploaded a new version that includes a new work-in-progress extension (Extended Search).
This version fixes the transcoding and recoding (with lower bitrates) which was broken in the previous release.

I've not tested this on OS/2 and eCS at all but it runs on Windows with Sun Java 1.4.2!
Golden Code Java should still work with this release on OS/2 and eCS but you might have to manually update the DB script (a list of steps is included in a textfile - the file to modify is "subsonic.script" in the \subsonic\db directory).

I tried the image editor with Golden Code Java 1.4.1 and it works.
I did get some out of memory exceptions but that's normal (the parameter "-Xmx256M" should help).
Any difference between the native and the "odin" port version,  prerformance etc. ?

Hello Rainer!

I did a test with GC only so I can't tell you which might be better.
Generally GC seems to be better...at least with the applications I use.
The latest addition is Subsonic which has problems with Innotek Java (see Subsonic Thread at the Multimedia section).
