Applications / Re: HDD Copy

Hi Dennis,

I've personally used the very powerful DFSee not so long ago for an exact same problem using the bootable disk image. Requires no running system. Herewith link :http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee9xx_dsk.zip

Download and unzip then run exe to create bootable floppy disk. I then installed new HDD as primary master and failing HDD as secondary master. Insert bootable floppy n boot up. From the DFSee console I then created the partitions as necessary on new HDD then proceeded to duplicate the partitions from the failing HDD to new HDD one at a time via the menu items at top of DFSee console. Then removed failing HDD and setup system back to normal, powered up and Voila! :) All systems up n running no problems but a chkdsk at startup.

Hope you reach the same success that I had. Still get the feeling it was pot luck as am NO fundi at all. Many thanks to Jan van Wijk for an invaluable tool.

Hi All,

I require some help creating a new program object to run an old Dos *.bat file. I've created the object from New Program template and set the path etc, but problem is when I click the object to run the program, Dos vdm starts and runs the *.bat file then when complete promptly closes. I'd like for the Dos vdm to remain open to select options etc from the file. The file in question is part of an old Dos Accounting package : PAD Accounting Release 1! Yes, still run it... works for our purposes as it's easy to edit customer profiles etc and keyboard shortcuts work like a charm. What's more is the fact that its so small considering that it was made to run on old XT hardware :-)

It's no train smash, but thought it easier and faster to set up a program object to launch this particular program from the desktop vs opening a separate Dos vdm and typing in the name of the file to launch it.

Any help much appreciated.

Regards,

John.

Hi all,

I was just browsing through some old articles in OS/2 e-Zine and noticed that they had an Art Department for mostly every months e-Zine. I know that OS/2 e-Zine is no longer maintained or published but was wondering what ever happened to Tim Swank who did some great artwork. It's sad to lose so many talented individuals  :'(

To David Graser working on the icon and folder themes, Keep up the good work  8)

Hi,

In reply to os2monkey, herewith link to an old article in OS2eZine :

Golden Code Java does appear to have a few benefits over Innotek's Java implementation.

Games / Re: OpenGL / Mesa3d

Personally I think it'd be the obvious thing to do- bringing Hardware Accelerated Graphics to OS/2 eCS. Compizfusion anyone?  ;) Think it'll attract more users to OS/2 eCS and open up more possibilities for the desktop, and possibly attract more developers?

Regards.

Totally agree with you here too, Saigin.

Played with PM VNC in the past and can be great fun mucking your friends about :-) Also has advantages of taking over control of others' desktops to show them where and how to do things. I found that performance was slow on PM VNC but thought it may be the fact that OS/2 installed on an Old P1 233Mhz, 384MB ram. Going back to your question about OpenGL, perhaps hardware accelerated display drivers may also help with performance? I'm not sure neither and only recently came back to computer scene as it's only a part time hobby.

This for clericvn,

You may want to check out some vids at youtube :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnLmtuA42N8

You can also do some more searches at youtube on "OS/2 around the World" or "OS/2 vs NT shootout", some very old yet interesting articles there if you have the time and patience.

Personally, I've just brought an old 486DX4 back to life by installing Warp3, Dos and Red Hat5.2 in a dual boot environment. Warp3 is very snappy even on this old system. I intend to somehow possibly make it a project sometime to post a vid on youtube showing old Warp3 and XP on newer P4 side by side doing similar tasks for comparison and the time and steps taken to achieve common goals.

Hope you find all the answers you're looking for.

Hi,

I did a google search for open source accounting software and came accross Turbo Cash.
http://www.turbocash.net/
amongst others.

Just started downloading the Win version to give it a test drive. If it's any good, is there perhaps a possibility it can be ported to OS/2 eCS even maybe setup a bounty for the port? I've had a look at GnuCash but that seems to be more for personal use and not SMB. I'm in a manufacturing concern and still use an old DOS program which serves it's purpose but would like to migrate to something newer that has the little extras like reports and graphs :-)

Hi,

I've also just reinstalled Warp 4 and am now updating my system completely using the "Advise, download and install packages" tab using OS2MT. I found the best way to get it working was from a fresh install of warp with no other drivers installed and have left my system with default VGA support. Also, it's very important to place VROBJ.DLL in your Libpath statement in your config.sys file. After restarting my machine with updated config.sys, I installed OS2MT from the commandline after which started OS2MT for the first time and first checked for updates to OS2MT using the "Update OS2MT" tab before going ahead.

Only problem I'm having so far is very slow download speeds, 3.3k/s vs 1024k/s on my XP and SLED10 box. Could someone please advise where to change my MTU settings for optimal throughput. What are optimal settings for TCP/IP? I have a Realtek RTL8169 based ethernet card connected to a Zyxel P-320W router for internet access etc.

Thanks in advance,

John.

Hi All,

Thank you all for your positive replies. I eventually got myself a Zyxel P-320W Router to which I connected my iBurst Desktop modem and now can enjoy browsing the web etc without having to use proprietory drivers :-) Yay! At last, and no need to dial in anymore :-) This setup works great under XP and the various distros of Linux I've been playing around with.

Now, I'd like to reinstall OS/2 Warp 4 and utilize my router to connect to the net from a fresh install. Ultimately, I'd like to make use of the OS2MT program to automate the updates etc and then create a bootable CDRom image for future updated and pain free install of OS/2. I'm no techie, so please help with setting up OS/2 Warp 4 from clean install to connect to the net via the router. I've enabled DHCP on the router and the lan card is working as I can ping myself.

Thanks in advance,

John.

Hi,

I'm not exactly sure of what you'd like to achieve but I had a problem in the past of Dual booting my machine between Linux and OS/2. Pls check in past forums re using OS/2 Boot Manager to boot multiple OS's. Both El Vato and Obiwan posted some very good and detailed howtos there. Alternatively you can try AiR Boot from the following link : http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/system/air-bootv105_en.zip

I've personally had much success with it as setting up is really easy and pain free. Other langauge versions are available too.

Hope this helps.

John.
