Hardware / Re: Scanner for OS2 / eCs

QuoteI can confirm that canoscan LIDE series (all are USB) work great with OS/2 / eCS,
And I can confirm that the LIDE60 does not use the same scanner engine as others in the LIDE series, and it doesn't work with eCS/OS2. Never assume that something works, until somebody can confirm it, for the specific piece of hardware. Even then, there are no guarantees, because a few manufacturers have been known to change chips, but not the device name.

Must be a case of chaning hardware internals without chaning the product name then. I have a LiDE 60 running with SANE on my eCS 1.2R box for years now. Wors absolutely fine - only PDF creation of multiple pages is not as convenient as under winXP.

OpenOffice 3.2.0 is coming. I tested a first version (very stable and some OS/2-bugs are solved).

Do we get text drag and drop with the mouse?

yes it's still worked on. there should be another preview shortly

Do you have any info if the SMP issue is being addressed? Pretty useless if it does not work on SMP systems these days...

Hm. I don't quite see the GemPlus driver as a substitute for the truecrypt IFS.

General Discussion / Re: Bounty Rules
2008.12.03, 08:38:26
I think there are two things that need to be improved: cancellation of dead bounties and timing of payments

1) I suggest to put a deadline on bounties:
- 3 months initially. If no one declared to be working on anything, the bounty is closed again and the sponsors are not committed to their promised payments anymore
- Once someone declared to be working on a bounty, there needs to be some progress every 3 months to extend the deadline.
- Maximum duration needs to be set by sponsors when contributing to a bounty (12 months, 24 months etc., depending on the nature of the project)

2) Payment for the bounties should not be transfered unless the bounty is paid out. Maybe it can be reserved on the credit card of the sponsors (to ensure it actually can be paid)

Open Bounties / Re: Port of FreeMat

Can this bounty please be closed due to lack of interest (even mine is gone ;-)? I would like to divert the funds to the generic wrapper for windows plugins or the Qt4 port. Thanks!

With the announcement by mensys to be able to distribute the windows binaries of Flash this project should be good place to show financial support!

Open Bounties / Re: OpenWengo port

Is anybody still working on any applications mentioned in this threat? If there is no interest at all in this bounty, can it be closed and the funds diverted to other, more promising projects? (I am one of the sponsors and would like to see my money go to active bounties)

Open Bounties / Re: TrueCrypt port

Did anybody even start working on this bounty? If there is no interest at all in it, can it be closed and the funds diverted to other, more promising projects? (I am one of the sponsors and would like to see my money go to active bounties)

Started the second vm and I get the following.

Is this a limitation of our OSE edition? Or is the a linking prob with the port? I saw this same item mentioned in a much earlier post, but I saw no solution from that post.

====
Failed to load VMMR0.r0.
VBox status code: -2 (VERR_INVALID_PARAMETER).

It's one of the current restrictions of the OS/2 version.

I can set it to seemless and then change virtual desktops and not have it change out of "fullscreen".

Why don't you use real fullscreen in this case? 'seamless' gives you fullscreen only distorted and has no advantages. IIRC there is something about OS/2 PM (no alpha blending?) that makes the real seamless mode impossible/infeasible.

Andreas . .. .

It would be nice to link to the page describing the package instead of the deep link.

Above is a suggestion that has been made and I'm sure that there are several other ways that we can improve the bounty system; but we need you to post the thoughts and ideas - now is the time and not tomorrow! :-)

I would like to be able to put a deadline on the bounty (with an option to extend it in case something moved into the right direction (or the sponsor believes it is still worthwhile to keep the bounty up)). I have quite some money invested in several projects and see only very little (=no) development with some of these (truecrypt for instance). Feels kind of uncomfortable to have a lot of sunk money when it could be used for better (more active) projects ) - or to pay my rent ;o)

You said; "Probably because 'Internal Rate of Return' is one of the worst measures to base investment decisions on. Use NPV (Net Present Value) instead..." Now, isn't that very funny since this is one of the Financial Analyses Tools that are used by the United Nation Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Here, follow the attached link and see for yourself. ;) :-

Question is: What do "you" know that the "folks" at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) among others don't know.?

Good luck to you.

This is heavily off topic now, but just have a look into any good finance intro book to learn about the trouble with IRR. Just try to evaluate a portfolio of projects, try to evaluate a project where cash flows get re-invested etc. A nice intro is in Copeland Weston and Shastri (2005): "Financial Theory and Corporate Policy", Chapter 2F.

Why does UNIDO use it - maybe because it's built in to Excel? ;o) Maybe because they are bureaucrats that need to get paid for the quantity of cases they evaluate? Maybe because the guys deciding about the rules of evaluation got their education quite some time ago and science went on - frankly, I don't know.

What I do know from the projects I was part in (among them an investment project with almost 2 billion EUR in volume - initially, before we helped our client to save 30% of it), that it's not unusual that you need to explain a corporate decision maker why something like discounting is a good idea at all. And I recognize that authority often overrules reason - especially if you can afford wasting money because there is no competitive pressure that forces you to be smart to survive. Large scale public projects are a perfect example here.

Probably because 'internal rate of return' is one of the worst measures to base investment decisions on. Use NPV (Net Present Value) instead or, if you really want to be precise, a real option approach! ;o)
