  Robert,

You might want to try NcFTP and 7-Zip, both ported by Paul Smedley - http://os2ports.smedley.info. I have not tried >2GB files with these, so I don't know first hand if they work.

I have used ctorrent in the 'Tor' package available at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu to get >2GB torrents successfully. I have heard that ctorrent can have trouble with some torrents, though - YMMV. I have had no trouble myself.

This sounded like an interesting idea until I read:

"What we have found is that more than 50% of the hot spots that people are mapping are wide open. A lot of businesses have open Wi-Fi hot spots in order to entice customers to spend time there. A lot of times, people are willing to share their password for devices that are encrypted."

So this software is collecting information about wireless connections from everyone who is using their software (not unlike a spybot) including passwords to encrypted connections, then disseminating this info to everyone else using their software.

  Thanks, but no thanks....

Applications / Re: Sun wants Innotek

Oh... and while we're at it... the Flash wrapper too....
#109
The only real requirements I know of is libc 0.6.3, and adding the VBoxDrv.sys to CONFIG.SYS. That's all I had to do to use VirtualBox.exe. I am also using a P4.

Someone on the Innotek site had trouble until they lowered their cache size for JFS.... maybe you could try that?

I haven't used the BFE version lately... I have no trouble with VirtualBox.exe. One thing I do know... if you install with the BFE, you must set the hard drive to PIIX3 if you try to run that Virtual Machine with VirtualBox.exe.

The other thing is VirtualBox.exe does not work well on SMP machines. There are a couple of test files for this problem on the Innotek ftp site....

No problem with NAT here either (not using a firewall on the host though), but you seem to have a special setup that may present special routing requirements...

How about at least open the source to the IFE and runtime? Maybe OS/2 World could petition for that?

Applications / Sun wants Innotek

Just saw this on the newswires:

Sun Microsystems Inc. ( 16.94, +0.13, +0.7%) said Tuesday it would acquire innotek, a privately held developer of open source virtualization software. Innotek specializes in a product called VirtualBox that allows software developers to build, test and run open source applications on different software platforms. Financial terms for the all-stock deal weren't disclosed. Sun said it expects the deal to close during its third fiscal quarter. End of Story

Interesting.... maybe more resources will be brought to VBox.

 Rob,

Thanks for those links! I just finished reading the 'Inside OS/2 Warp Server for e-business' - whew! It was interesting as a review, but no real deep secrets revealed. The only possible thing of interest was this one tidbit I didn't know about:

7.15 Performance improvements
Many of the enhancements introduced into OS/2 Warp Server for e-business
have been for performance and reliability. TCP/IP and the related
applications have also been enhanced to more quickly and reliably serve in
this e-business transformation. In certain cases, applications taking
advantage of the new enhancements will show up to a 40 percent
improvement in performance over previous versions of TCP/IP.
The sockets drivers now have two parameters to improve performance. For
            example:
            DEVICE=x:\mptn\protocol\sockets.sys /mem:# /gdt:#
            Where
/mem:# is the number of 4KB clusters allocated at initialization time. The
default is 75 and the range is 30 to 32766.
            and
/gdt:# is the maximum number of 64KB blocks that the stack can allocate.
            The default is 80.

I would think the defaults are conservative, this being IBM. Might be interesting to tweak around with these a bit...

 Robert,

Yep... it didn't seem worth it after I read it it too. I'm going to keep looking around though...

Looking forward to what you can find out too...

A snapshot is basically an archive of the virtual machine - you can have many different ones. Seamless mode is just a windows with no menu bar or status bar....
#116
I have installed Windows 2000 and Fedora 8 on this latest VirtualBox using the QT version (VirtualBox.exe). Networking, shared folders, integrated mouse and variable screen size work great. Snapshots work along with seamless mode. I have had no mouse issues as reported by others - may be video card related (I am running a P4 processor with HT off, ATI Radeon 9600 AGP)? Maybe MARKEXE would help those with SMP boxes?

There still is no direct CD, Floppy, USB or COM support (haven't tried the Pipe support yet though). No clipboard sharing. Over all, it seems to have better performance than VirtualPC for OS/2. IMO, once CD hardware support is added, VPC is history.

Robert,

Isn't the OS/2 TCP/IP stack taken from AIX? Maybe all these 'undocumented' settings are documented in AIX literature? Just thinking out loud. A quick websearch brought up this:  www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/pdfs/redp0103.pdf 'How To: Easily configure TCP/IP on your AIX system'. Might be worth a read....

Programming / Re: os2ldr
2008.02.08, 00:21:43
There is a new forum at http://forum.ecomstation.ru : 'Kernel - Development of New Kernel' (scroll all the way to the bottom). Pasha is asking for ideas about what to add to an os2ldr.ini file he is developing. This kind of stuff is way over my head, but if some here have an opinion worth airing... head on over.
#119
I don't think Paul did them.... and I can't see how it is bad news, but - go to the forum and read.... the implication is they will provide OSE builds sporadically. Just like Paul has been doing. I guess dbg stands for 'debug'?
#120
Well, it looks like the best we get is 'Officially Unofficial' - builds by Innotek, but not supported: ftp://ftp.dmik.org/pub/common/vbox. At least NAT works now, along with Snapshots and shared folders!
