You didn't say if you tried Flash 10?

Not all drives are compatible with the T43. I have found some that work, some that work with error 2010, and some that simply don't work. All drives should work in the Ultrabay. This is because the T43 wants certain programs in the firmware, and will fail if they are not there.

the BIOS version is good, that way you can bypass 2010 without having to press F1, and, at least with some drives, continue booting.

Hardware / Re: Solid State Drives (SSD)
« on: 2010.03.21, 05:39:42 »
I've got a Thinkpad X41 with an IBM 64 GB SSD made for that model. It's fast to boot, and fast for almost everything. The original used a 1.8 inch hard drive, so the SSD is a huge improvement.

It's available in my store: http://www.blondeguy.com/ComputersForSale.html

Loading big applications seems slow only because everything else is so fast. I'm really liking the small size and long battery life of the computer. I think SSD is good news for eCS users.

That depends. What is a Z77?

Google says it's a Casio camera. In that case, no.

« on: 2010.03.12, 01:14:35 »
If it is Flash 10 holding up the release, I'd be willing to leave that out. But I have software subscription, so I'm getting Flash 10 whenever it comes out. If I had an entitlement to 2.0 and was waiting for the release, I'd want them to hold off until Flash 10 is ready, then include that.

Flash is very important at this point to many web services. I have plenty of Mac and Windows users who have tried my eCS systems, and basically that is the biggest limitation our platform has. Quite a few users would like a computer from me, even if it runs eCS. I'd say perhaps a quarter of internet users rarely use a feature of Windows or Mac that is not on eCS, except for Flash.

Open Bounties / Re: OS2 & eCS kernel
« on: 2010.03.06, 03:16:53 »
I am contributing to this bounty in partnership with Craig Colby.

I hope kernel authors will claim this bounty when a suitable kernel is ready.

I envision a kernel able to access modern computer features that can still offer a 32-bit OS/2 environment, but with specific extensions for 64-bit and beyond.

Internet / Re: Question about Firefox bookmarks
« on: 2010.02.28, 05:38:20 »
You can backup and restore bookmarks from inside Firefox using the menu in the Organize Bookmarks dialog.

The actual file is places.sqlite, which you can edit directly using SQLite Browser.

download PMMail/2 from Hobbes...

You can "join the club" if you want.

I don't know that any address-book format has changed, but it's easy to find out.

Marketplace / For Sale: A sporty laptop
« on: 2010.02.18, 22:40:31 »
Blonde Guy has prepared a sporty new laptop. Mobilopeep is small, yet powerful. Intended to be easy to travel with, Mobilopeep weighs 3 lbs, 3 oz and has a 12 inch screen that fits in places where larger laptops are awkward. Battery life is 5 hours with the extended battery.

Mobilopeep starts out as an IBM Thinkpad X41, then gets the maximum RAM and an UltraBase X4 docking station with an UltraBay Slim DVD/CD-RW drive. Then Blonde Guy installs a 64 GB solid state drive (SSD) for outstanding hard drive performance. At home, the dock connects to your monitor, keyboard and mouse (USB and PS/2 are both supported.) SNAP accelerated graphics supports both normal and wide screen monitors.

See the Blonde Guy Computers For Sale web page for more details and ordering information.

Blonde Guy Computers come with eCS installed and configured and many applications, including OpenOffice.org 3.11 and RSJ CD-Writer installed as well.

If you don't see what you want on the website, please tell me what you'd like to see when you buy your next eCS computer.

Hi Mark,

I think what you are doing is feasible. If you get stuck, I'm planning to hold a programmer's workshop at Warpstock 2010 in Waterloo, ON where we will take projects such as yours, and help you complete them. It would be hands-on, so you'd bring your laptop with your project, and we'd be looking at your problems and brainstorm solutions.

This is the kind of environment I learned to program long ago, and I found it to be very powerful.

I see they don't have X on any platform any more, which shouldn't surprise me.

I think they were $149, so make it $1490, and if X were still viable on any platform, then I would expect them to do it (because if 10 will offer to buy, there have got to be others who would, too.)

But that's because I thought they had it on other platforms, which would make it just a few days effort on OS/2. Plus, they were eCS supporters, so they didn't really need a strong business case.

I think HOBLink would be up to date if there was even a tiny demand for it.
If you can find 10 paying customers, it would be worth it to approach them.

Applications / Re: OpenOffice.org and .xlsx files
« on: 2010.02.11, 19:56:58 »
Can you clarify your question? XLS and XLSX are completely different formats. Simply renaming it from XLS to XLSX will not fool anyone. In fact, upon open it will throw an error about the file being corrupt.

OK, you answered my question. Just renaming won't work. It's not a question of "fooling" someone. I just want to work in their document flow. I'll change the XLSX format (which OOo reads just fine), but I need to get their change back to them. They're set up to save in XLSX format, and they are expecting the filename not to change.

In the past, I have been able to get away with gross transgressions, because MS Office tools aren't that compatible with themselves. (Change the Printer on a Word Doc, and it may change badly enough to destroy data) Also, for a document with many users, one user may use styles and another use Word as a text editor, and that combination will likely cause data loss. The reason that I have been able to work inside a MS Office data flow using OS/2 and OS/2 tools is that there is this wiggle room.

All I'm looking for is some way to continue to use OS/2 inside a MS Office data flow. (The dataflow app is eRoom, if you are familiar with it. When I have my eCS machine inside their network, it uses eRoom fluently)

No, of course there is no technical requirement. But if a company has a requirement for xlsx, then I am obligated to conform. However, I wonder now if I save an XLS and rename it XLSX, will they actually know what happened?

Any Excel users out there?

The most important thing about a contact manager is managing the information you use. So what is also important is import/export to programs like PMMail/2. A simple port would be interesting, but making it work with OS/2 programs that we use everyday would be better.

I see it has only 210 downloads, so maybe this can be taken over for our use?
