OS/2 Voice doesn't respond.
Neither does www.os2bbs.com.
Warpstock.org is out.
The last OS/2 Voice news item was from last Monday.

I have no idea what is going on.

Applications / Re: Virtual machines
2007.08.08, 06:15:19
I have to agree with others that it's possible to run eCS on VPC. I've got eCS 1.2, 1.2 R and 2.0 RC 1 running on VPC, either on Connectix version 5.1 in Windows XP, or MS Virtual Server on Windows 2003 server.

I have sound and network. USB is not possible in VPC. Sound is disabled in MS Virtual Server, but ought to work in MS Virtual PC.

Shared folders is criminally slow. Windows 2000 running on Windows VPC is much more stable than Windows 2000 running on an eCS VPC. Others have found the MS VPC to be very slow for graphics. MS has it's own version of the OS/2 additions.

For the Windows 2003 Virtual Server, I gave the eCS CD to a system administrator, and I told him to install it. He said he picked "easy install" and all the defaults, and it just installed.

I love that bounties are being awarded, and I think Nickk is deserving.

I have one network device driver test that is worth posting, and I hope that someone with the hardware can do this one.

Connect via NetBIOS both ways, sharing and connecting. Copy a files adding up to 10 GB from one machine to another. There are four possibilities, depending on pushing and pulling from each machine.

If the driver is faulty (and many current OS/2 drivers are), then you will hit a kernel trap. You will possibly see the trap in NetBIOS, but that is wrong -- it's the fault of the device driver. I don't know the reason for the trap, but somewhere along the line, wrong source code was distributed, and that's why many drivers have the trap.

Good luck nickk!

Networking / SAMBA and Active Directory
2007.07.16, 19:42:11
I have inserted an eCS 1.2 R virtual machine into an Active Directory network. I've installed the latest SAMBA client, but I'm not sure how to use it.

I tried the obvious, specifying server, share, user and password, but it doesn't seem to work.

I can use the IBM requestor, where I can use limited browsing, but I can't authenticate.

A Windows 2000 virtual machine in the same network has complete access, so my credentials are OK.

smbcfs beeps all the time, but I have no idea why.

Is anyone else working with Active Directory?

OK, I tried the 20070713 version of gnash, and it doesn't crash anymore, but neither does it go beyond the loading screen. However, I tried episode 2, and that appears to load and play just fine, at least on my laptop.

Not every flash cartoon on the site plays, but it's really cool that some do. Thanks for the interesting port.

Installed on Intel 865G-based computer with a SATA drive.

ACPI Shutdown, Sound, USB, Network, Accelerated Video, DVD Writer all work.

Without ACPI, neither shutdown nor sound would work, but the installer figured it all out -- I took the default settings.

I wish there was also support for the sleep modes on the desktop -- that could save me a fair sum over time in electricity.

I just tried gnash on the oddtodd collection, and I didn't achieve playback. Here one of many test files that don't play on my system -- http://www.oddtodd.com/laidoff2.swf

It gives this information when it fails:
mdb:110, lastbuf:0 skiping granule 0
Assertion failed: data_size > pos, file sound_handler_sdl.cpp, line 609

Killed by SIGABRT
pid=0x0073 ppid=0x0068 tid=0x0008 slot=0x00e1 pri=0x0400 mc=0x0001
N:\P\GNASH\GNASH.EXE

All of the flash files on the website will play in the 7.14 version of innotek player. The example I gave will play in the Flash 5 or maybe even Flash 4 player.

Hey, I'm an OS/2 subway software consultant. I do the OS/2 software for the NYC subway system. Can you help me get in there?

I am reminded of this question, for the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet - Files for the Thinkpad 770s, and 600s.  I now look at their site, and it lists all versions of Windows 32 bit OS, but no mention of OS/2.  I wonder if some in IBM had a death wish for OS/2.

This question comes up from time to time. An interesting answer is from Louis V. Gerstner Jr., CEO of IBM and author of the book "Who Says Elephants Can't Dance? Inside IBM's Historic Turnaround".

http://www.amazon.com/Elephants-Dance-Inside-Historic-Turnaround/dp/0060523794/ref=sr_1_1/104-3139484-8663109?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180289637&sr=8-1

The short version is that Gerstner takes responsibility for killing OS/2, and states that it was an important component of IBM's turnaround.

Gerstner started as CEO in 1993. OS/2 was dead within 18 months of that.

I looked at the source code for freetype, and it doesn't look very hard to port. However, the Innotek Font Engine does more, regarding anti-aliased text. It also offers an API to render text.

I think if you want to port, you should get on IRC at netlabs and see if you can get help from the original authors of the Font Engine. Supporting the same API would mean that OpenOffice.org and the Mozilla browsers would work right away.

I think the OS/2 part isn't so hard, because this font rendering is an end run around the built-in OS/2 font handling. I haven't had a good look at the Innotek API, though.

The greylisting article was pretty cool, but how can I test it? I'm using Weasel -- will Weasel resend a message to your greylisting server? Can I set up greylisting on Weasel?

The printer driver situation is disturbing, to be sure.

I looked at taking over Win32Prn, and I saw that the amount of work was way to much for the benefit.

If I had been paid my normal wage, it would have been cheaper to buy every user a postscript printer.

However, you mention the Epson C88 printer. I just bought an Epson C88+ printer, and it works very well with the old Epomni5 driver. If you tried this and failed, you may want to go back and try again. Especially make sure the paper size is correct, because if it is not, it may look like the printer driver does not work. I'm using mine over USB, but I imagine the parallel port works, too.
