Networking / JetDirect/Port 9100 support
2011.12.13, 17:13:04
I have a printer on my network that I'd like to use from OS/2. While drivers aren't a problem (it will process PCL5/5e), getting data to the printer has proved tricky. The printer uses a Port 9100/JetDirect-clone interface as its main network interface (it also claims to speak LPD, but I can't get it to work) and JetAdmin for OS/2 (which provided the port drivers for the raw TCP/IP printing scheme) seems to have vanished from the Internet... How does one go about adding support for this?

Games / Trials of Battle, anyone?
2011.01.10, 22:58:48
I was digging through my pile of old CDs and I found this old favorite of mine, and much to my surprise, the Virtual PC GRADD drivers turn out to be good enough that it runs flawlessly in VPC! Seeing as the game appears to support TCP/IP multiplayer, I'm wondering if anyone feels like perhaps doing a tournament?

I'm creating an OS/2 VM and in order to get some support for modern image file formats, I was installing the new version of GBM from Hobbes. Sadly the WPI installer is sadly inadequate, as it fails to do certain crucial things like adding the GBM path to the system path and library path in CONFIG.SYS. Even after I do this by hand (and reboot), things still don't work: GBMV/GBMV2 fail to run (when I run them from the command line, I'm told that they're looking for TCPIP32, which, of course, my old Warp4+FP15 combo lacks) and GBMVER says that I lack either GBM or some dependencies. What gives here? Nothing I've read seems to indicate that GBM relies on TCP/IP, so was this just a case of bad compilation switch which included an erroneus dependency in the app, or is there something more going on here? Can anybody help me get GBM working?

I'm trying to think of a list of abandoned OS/2 apps that were actually made freeware. So far, I can only think of BlueCAD, TrueSpectra Photo>Graphics and Dadaware Embellish. Can anybody think of any others?

Applications / Smartsuite Updates?
2010.08.09, 22:12:16
I recently found my old SmartSuite for Warp 4 CD and decided to install it in my OS/2 VM. The install went fine and things work, but I was wondering if it's still possible to download updates or if I'm stuck with whatever version shipped on the CD. I'm also wondering ho I can even figure out what version I have, as the "about" window doesn't seem to give any version numbers at all, except for Word Pro which is "Release O97.1944.0" The part number on the disk is T14970 and the copyright date, both on the disk and in the programs is 1998. If anyone could help me out here, either with updating the version I have or even just figuring out what that version is, that would be great.

So now I'm stuck with the annoying copy protection screen when I found my old CD and reinstalled the game... Any help?

Programming / OpenWatcom versus GCC
2009.12.09, 05:10:50
Which is the better compiler for OS/2 at the moment. Obviously OW has the advantage of producing .EXEs that need external runtimes in order to run, but it also has the disadvantage of being more old fashioned in terms of language features that it supports, especially on the C++ side. Does anyone have recomendations here?

They seem to have disappeared from the Web and a search on Google reveals that the owner died back in 2007. Who would I talk to about possibly getting their stuff released as freeware? Has anybody already tried and been rebuffed. Is the stuff still sold in some dusty corner of the Internet that I don't know of? Inquiring minds want to know.

What are they and where are they located? I'm looking to build an "OS/2 Exploration Kit" for who have acquired a virgin copy of Warp 4 from eBay or someplace and would like all the best freeware and upgrades on a single CD (I'm planning on distributing it as an ISO) In theory, this should be useful for people who want to just burn a CD from their "main" system and everything needed to get their OS/2 up to speed available locally? Any help here?

... seems to be impossible. When trying to boot from the Boot CD (or actually an image of it), the emulated system freezes at the OS/2 logo screen. When attempting to boot from floppy images, I get a trap when disk 1 is loading that says something about an error in OS2LVM. My emulated configuration is a simple system with 64 MB of RAM and a 10 GB HD image, so that shouldn't be the problem. Any hints here? Does QEMU just not work with OS/2 4.52 or am I doing something wrong? Note, that I'm running QEMU in the emulation-only mode and not using any virtualization features, so bad reactions to my AMD CPU shouldn't be a part of the problem.

Figure this could be useful to some folks... Feel free to add to it.

Mini-review: IBM's answer to Emacs... A nice, full-featured, totaly expandable text editor, but with a nice UI and less bloat (aka, nobody ever bothered to port Tetris, ELIZA or a Web Browser to it)

Has anybody created a true MMPM/2 handler for formats like DivX/XviD and the like or are we stuck using ersatz  apps from the *nix world to enjoy our "DVD backups"?

I know that Describe (the comapny) went out of business, but did anybody buy them or is DeScribe an orphan product. If we could figure out who exactly owns the IP these days maybe we could get a rerelease (or maybe even a source release, which would let us develop a better alternative to that massive heap of bloat known as OpenOffice)

Any leads?

Back in the 90s, at the ripe old age of nine, I was a (not exactly_ grilled OS/2 evangelist loudly proclaiming the advantages of my (father's) chosen Operating System compared to all who would listen. My peers thought me odd. My teachers were amazed that I could even hold (much less READ) OS/2 2.1 Unleashed. I had access to all sorts of cool games like GalCiv 2 and (later) Trials of Battle that everybody liked but nobody else could play. All was right with the world. But the world changed. First the arrival of Windows 95 killed DOS games and I could no longer play the latest games against my buddies. Then the small trickle of OS/2 games dried up. Then this thing called Linux started looking really cool... Suddenly, I was a Windoze (for games)/Linux(everything else plus still more games) dual booter. OS/2 fell by the wayside. Now, thanks to the magical powers of virtualization, I have rejoined the OS/2 faithful (albeit without Trials of Battle, which I seem to have lost the CD for). Will you welcome me back?
