Setup & Installation / Installation troubles on Gateway laptop
« on: 2010.03.12, 09:52:13 »
I have a couple of old laptops that I planned on doing something with. First in line is a Gateway Solo 2500, it's a 300MHz and strange 18 bit graphics. I originally tried to install Linux on it and tried about a million distributions but couldn't get it right. The closest I get is up and running but the 18 bit graphics doesn't get installed properly so the appearance is close to useless...
So, I wanted to try something different and got my hands on a couple of OS/2 4.52 CD's. The install runs fine up to the point where I'm supposed to reboot off the hd to continue the installation. (Then I have to go into BIOS and change settings to make it boot from C: instead of CD ROM.) And then the computer freezes after the normal BIOS boot sequence. Sometimes filling half the screen with the number 99, sometimes just black screen. I spent a bunch of hours of this with no luck.
I then thought what the h**k and looked at piratebay and got a CD with eCS RC7 instead, just to try if it would work instead. This install runs fine for a while. Then ends with error code 0x50 at the point where I'm supposed to reboot from hd. There it fills my screen with a lot of ASCII in bright colors, and then stops.
Can anyone give some help here? All I want to do is to get this laptop back up running. And I hate the thought of having to try and find those Win98 CD's that came with it. Have no idea where they might be after all those years...
