In case anyone is still interested, I have mananaged to get properjavardp working under ECs using the Java6.  I was using the Java6 that was the most recent one up until a few days ago, I have not tried the very new version.

How to make it work:
1.   Go here http://sourceforge.net/projects/properjavardp/files/ and download these files
(a) log4j-java1.1.jar
(b) properJavaRDP-1.1.jar
(c) properJavaRDP14-1.1.jar

2. Go here http://www.urbanophile.com/~arenn/hacking/download.html and download this file: java-getopt-1.0.14.jar

3.  put all those files in a directory (I called mine x:\programs\rdp)

4.  Make a text file in that directory that contains the following:
java -classpath
properJavaRDP-1.1.jar;properJavaRDP14-1.1.jar;log4j-java1.1.jar;java-getopt-1.0.14.jar net.propero.rdp.Rdesktop insert.theremoteurl.here.instead

5.  Call the text file something with the exension .CMD (for example rdp.cmd)

6. Have fun

This will work if Java6 is your default java but it is not default Java for me so in the CMD file I added the Java6 paths at the start.  So far works very well except that the mouse pointer is black and I have not yet worked out how (or if I can) make the window size bigger.

Hello,

I don't know if this is just me, but I am trying to use estyler (in Ecs 2.1) and WPS wizard.

(1) When the desktop is about to load at boot, I get an undoable system freeze.  But if i reboot to the commandline to disable estyler (rename its 2 *.dll's to *.old), it works.

(2) I also get a WPS freeze (clock stops, can't interact with anything although mouse moves) if I click on "open containing folder) in the firefox 10 download box.  Not a problem when e-styler alone is running.  Only a problem when WPS wizard is running.

(3) I also get a WPS freeze (clock stops, can't interact with anything although mouse moves) if I attempt to open a folder from the command line using the folder program (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/util/wps&file=folder10.zip&backto=%2Fh-search.php%3Fkey%3Dfolder). Not a problem when e-styler alone is running.  Only a problem when WPS wizard is running.

I'd like to be able to capture some diagnostic data, then maybe find a way to give it to the developers of WPS Wizard and Estyler (i.e. do something useful for them) but I don't know how to do this.

For what its worth I have the same problem as melf does, but on a compaq/HP tc4200 notebook.  That is, the borders of the screen on higher resoultions extend beyond limits of the screen.   This problem also occurs when an external monitor is used, until I use the "advanced" button in the "Screen" object to set the output to crt and then set the scaling.  But it does not seem to remember this when I re-boot.  The fix described in the PDF guide in the snap folder of loading device=x:\os2\mdos\vprmi.sys doesn't work, nor does fiddling with gaoption lcdusebios.

Having said all that I don't really mind because 1024x768 is adequate for me on the laptop screen and I rarely use an external monitor.

Sorry to bring up this old chestnut but I am wondering if we ever got any further on this?

Hardware / Printers
2012.07.19, 00:47:09
Hello,

I happened to find this:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas1b44a2cf4ba778d83862568250053649f

It can be used to tell you what "language" a printer speaks.  So if your printer is not on the list of supported printers in Ecomstation, maybe you can choose from the supported list another printer that speaks the same langauge?

Martin,

I know this is off topic for the post but I just thought I'd mention that I found the document you refer to and link to your post - regarding the "user experience", was very interesting reading.  I too think there should be a "back" button on folders.  There is a keyboard shortcut to it already (backspace) so hopefully that means adding a button can't be too hard.

Yes I am also using the version that is shipped with ECS 2.1.  Interesting. Are there any other differences between the two other than the splash screen?

Multimedia / SNAP - Quiet mode?
2012.07.16, 08:38:16
Hello,

I was wondering if anybody knew if there was a way to get rid of the SNAP splash screen during boot process - where it displays the graphic?  Or alternately, where that graphic is and what format it is, so that I can change it?

Just a stupid customization, but hey, I like doing stupid things.

I don't think its compatible with WiFi, at least using the WiFi widget on EcS.  Once injoy is installed, it says that the TCPIP interface is disabled (irrespective of whether the firewall is started or stopped).   There's probably a way around that through some kind of scripting but I think I'll leave it in the too hard basket for a while.

Try going to Local System, then System Setup, then Workplace Shell.  Under the tab "Window" there should be an option for "Animation".  I believe this needs to  be set to "enabled" for the open/close sounds to work.

Yes - the most recent Thundebird port 10.0.?

It wasn't possible to use Davmail on EcS/OS2 until Java6 became available.

Hmm.. all I know is that it our VPN uses "IPsec", which is done on the windows client by way of some software called 'SonicWall'.   I guess I could try and log the Sonicwall session on windows to figure out what is going on...on a rainy day.

The thing that really clinched Thunderbird as the ideal solution for me was the extensions.  With Thunderbird, Lightning, SoGo and Davmail, I can connect to our workplace Exchange Webmail Server from anywhere and use my laptop as a thick client with full mail, calendar and LDAP support (including offline sync).   Even if the current feature set is locked down, I'm a happy camper!

But a word of warning - the "mystery crash" in thunderbird is related to the popup calendar reminders through lightning.   Turn those off and its smooth sailing (apart from the occassional random crash when trying to print).

Am I correct in understanding that Injoy *might* let me connect to the VPN at my office?  If so, is that the "Injoy Dialer" or the "Injoy Firefirewall"?

It really is quite incredible that after the "launch" at Warpstock EU, there are no bells, whistles or even brief mentions on the official website (let alone elsewhere) that the job on 2.0 has been done.  Grumble grumble grumble.
