Setup & Installation / Re: ACPI -what is in it for me
« on: 2009.09.16, 19:55:34 »
Most likely, ACPI is perhaps installed but it is not working. A few tests, that can tell you more:

(1) Power consumption. ACPI is responsible for "sleep cycles" when your CPU has nothing reasonable to do, Does not work for you because you are hearing fans in "heavy duty" all the time.

(2) Shut down. Are you able to power off your machine by software? You command "Shut down", the machine shuts down and powers off. If you are able then ACPI is running somehow.

(3) Lid, standby, hibernate (notebooks). If you are closing NB lid, the display should get turned off near the "closed" position. This is an ACPI function. Also, ACPI is responsible for "standby" and "hibernate" states. If something of this works, ACPI is functional somehow.

(4) High IRQs (above 16 or 10h) used by your HW. If your HW manager (more reliable is sysinfo) shows high IRQs then your ACPI is running somehow and APIC is in use.

If nothing of (1) - (4) works then ACPI is not working. On a UNI machine, you can comment out the PSD= and the BASEDEV=APM.ADD statements. On SMP, you must have ACPI installed even if it is not working so that you must not comment out the statements.

Evil platform OK here (IE6), Epiphany (Debian) also OK. Perhaps, it's a problem of FF - comming clear, I have not tried FF because I prefer responsive apps from the big ones even if they are less mighty.

Hardware / Re: OS/2 WSeB can't operate hard disk !?
« on: 2009.09.10, 15:23:21 »
If I understand well, you were trying to create a 80 GB HPFS partition. The biggest HPFS partition is 64 GB. Therefore, either create 2 partitions or use JFS, which does not have the 64 GB limit.

94
Let us start here: the HD in the new machine IS NOT a busmaster. How come? UDMA HD must be a busmaster. Try

BASEDEV=DANIS506.ADD /A:0 /U:0 /BM /V

and other busmaster options (/GBM, /FORCEGBM). Note that you are risking hangup during boot, you need some rescue tool. If you have eCS CD, then you can use it (it does not matter that your system is W3, HPFS is the same). You can also archive the desktop before patching CONFIG.SYS and try to start from the archive when you get your machine hanged. Also, the driver is a bit dated (version 1.2). You can try a newer version - newer versions will know more HDs. If you succeed in making the HD a busmaster, post the listing again.

95
Please run

copy IBMS506$ somefile.txt
diskinfo v >>    somefile.txt
diskinfo c >>    somefile.txt

and post the results. This will make clear what mode is using your disk actually and what can be a problem.

Stefan, os2.cz is now up and running. Problems with DNS are gone. Thomas, thanks for the offer but waiting until today seemed a simpler solution to me.

I am afraid you haven't renamed the file. There are two file names:

(1) The file name. This can be changed from a command prompt using the REN command. You can do it from any command prompt in OS/2 - OS/2 window, 4OS2 window, or TakeCommand. The last two have filename completion ability, which is helpful in renaming winblows "short names". Note that this file name is the one, which is used by DosOpen() and other file accessing calls. The file name searched during processing CONFIG.SYS is this one.

(2) The title. This is the name below the file icon in PM programs. It can be different so that it can be more descriptive. For example, "Debugger" can be a title below a debugger (wdw.exe) icon. Titles can be changed using a PM tools. In fact, titles are EAs and not a file names.

OS/2 is managing all this transparently to the user. What you have done can be found in the "Properties" dialog. Look at the "File" page of the dialog. It can still show file name "dania~1.flt" even if the title is, for example, "daniatap.flt".

The partitions: You must create the partition first, then set it bootable. It can happen (I am not sure) that the partition must have data installed before you can set it bootable. I am always using installation CD for this: boot from the CD, continue to FDISK, create a partition, and Ctrl-Alt-Del.

As far as partitions for other operating systems are concerned: you don't need make them bootable right now. The installatiom will make them bootable. This will put out of work your Boot Manager so that you will have to boot from the CD anyway and patch the partition flags. Expect the problem from winblows installation. Linux need not cause the problem, if you install on a non-bootable partition and make the the partition bootable later.

98
OS/2 does have rename. The problem is usally caused by strange characters in the winblows "short file name". You are trying to type "dania~1.flt" but the file isnt found. Yes, I know that, too. Grrrrrrr ...

Solution. Run 4OS2 or TCMD. These prompts have "filename completion". Switch to the directory with the driver and type:

ren DANI*

then press TAB repeatedly until DANI* becomes "DANIA~1.FLT . Add a space and then a new name. Press Enter.

Hardware / Re: eCS won't boot
« on: 2009.09.02, 20:07:03 »
If you have installed on HPFS then I recommend using PING (Partimage Isn't Ghost) - which I recommend to everybody here  ;D  It's a Linux partition backup/restore which knows HPFS (I don't know whether it knows eCS JFS). The utility backups only used sectors and bzip's them so that eCS installation will fit in an about 230 MB file. PING also knows USB and can backup/restore over network. It can also burn the backup on a CD "on fly" but you need 2 CD drives for it because PING locks itself in its drive.  If you will restore to the original partition placement then you don't need anything else. Download a (bootable) ISO image and make a bootable CD. You are ready for making backups. PING is a freeware.

Why I am so pertinacious with PING  ;D  It did a great work for me when I was unable to install eCS because of USB CD drive. I installed elsewhere and then ported the partition using PING and DFSee.

It's worse. OriAI tried to boot from the CD - without success.

I suggest trying to boot more bootable CDs - any you can find around. This will make sure that the problem is with your machine (nothing boots) and not with the eCS CD and eCS installation (it's still possible even if rather unprobable). If it is your machine then it can be RAM, CPU or motherboard who has said you farewell. It can be a result of the blackout, or rather of an electric peak at the beginning of the blackout.

------

[Edit] Whoops, just noticed that XP has booted. Therefore, it does not seem to be HW. Another suggestion: boot the XP and check "Device monitor" and, if you have some tests (RAM, etc.) under XP then run them. Also, check BIOS whether it contains sensible data.

Search "Hardware Manager" in the "System" folder. If it is Warp 3 or later version, it should be there. Hardware Manager lists all HW recognized by the system so that it need not be all HW in the machine. Much better info is given by Sysinfo - download from hobbes.nmsu.edu . Sysinfo will list all HW detected no matter whether it is managed by the system or not.

Yes, until September, 4th or so. I have spoken with Jarda Kacer. The DNS reservation has expired and the current owner of the domain name (it's not Blue Point or someone from the Czhech OS/2 community!) seems not to be about to renew it. We need to wait until the protection time expires (that'll be September, 4th) and then Jarda will try to register the domain himself.

Right now, os2.cz is unreachable. I am not sure whether you can reach it by IP address. I do not have the address. I haven't tried it.

DFSee (run from the bootable CD) isn't able to backup on a USB device. At least, DFSee 8.xx  wasn't. That was my problem before RC6: I wasn't able to install because of USB CD drive. I needed to install elsewhere and then port the partition on my comp. But how? I have only USB's, SD, PCMCIA - nothing of this is known to DFSee from the CD.

If JL can find a device known to DFSee (booted from the CD) where he can backup then he don't need PING.

PING is able to backup on USB. It can also backup using network or burn a CD directly (if you have 2 drives, PING CD locks itself in its drive).

(1) You can make an image by something that understands HPFS. One nice utility that can do it is PING, a Linux partition backup/restore. You can download PING here

http://freshmeat.net/projects/ping_partimage_is_not_ghost/

the documentation to PING can be found here

http://ping.windowsdream.com/ping/howto-2.01.html

PING is a bootable ISO that can backup/restore HPFS partitions. It is an "intelligent" backup that stores only used disc sectors and bzip's them. Therefore, the image is much smaller than the partition and much better manageable. PING is freeware.

(2) Restoring the partition elsewhere is possible but you will need DFSee:

http://www.dfsee.com/

DFSee is a multi-platform HD editor, fdisk, etc.  ;D  which you will need for accomodationg the partition on another disc. You will need to update HD geometry and similar HW characteristics according to the new disc. You can do it after copying the ima.ge (but before trying to launch the image, of course). DFSee is a bootable ISO or an application. There exist a OS/2 version of DFSee, which you will use for it. DFSee is paid.

Ivan, I haven't written about "ways around". I wrote about the behaviour of certain winblows versions - and I do not even know, whether the intentional "mistake" is made by winblows 2000 or by another version.

But I am sure that certain winblows do the mistake intentionally and that it can foul HPFS partition beyond repair. That's what I wanted to stress. If it is possible to slash the mistaking by suitable drivers and patches of registry data so it is good.

At present, I do not have winblows on my comp at all. When I had winblows, I separated state and church by forgetting winblows "hard disk management", allowing winblows access only its own partition, and by using a Zip drive (FAT16 formatted) for communicating between eCS and winblows.
