Off Topic discussions / Re: My Smart Fortwo Pure

An interesting topic/discussion indeed; re: "Thank you for repeating my post, I was saying that the diesel and the diesel hybrid should be the only models.  Not everyone wants to have to replace batteries in their car..  and some of us are concerned as well about the ecological impact of all the improperly disposed of batteries which go along with hybrids......". So, how do the family of "six" set out on their journey?  ???; and, will there be enough affordable "food" for all when they arrive at the restaurant?  :-X

Bringing It On.  ;D

The rationale' for the Development and Launch of the Cassini
   Distribution!

!. "Chicago" has not/did not arrive... ??? whilst *Warp* did; but,
from all appearances one wonders what would have been the state of the OS/2
communities had it not been for OS/2 World; now, the OS/2 World
    Foundation
::)

2.  Of late, there has been no recent update as to how far away VOYAGER and
     eComStation
are while American Home Owners are struggling to remain in their homes.
Hopefully, with "Cassini (the Brand New Carrier Rocket)`Tasting` the Organic  Material
at Enceladus" (carrying COMFETAR) this might just be what the "doctors" (Houston)
    ordered for the US economy.

Hey "BigWarpGuy", how about a VIP seat for you on "launch date".  ;D and, re: "Yep, just make sure to spell my name correctly". Well, we will be sure not to forget to integrate the "spell checker".  ;)

Ah, Ha! You did "jolt" the memory there Kim when you said;

Quote
"While speaking of different processes it, might in current phase sound a bit overkill to talk about implementation of enterprise-, risk-, information-, data-, technical management. But, yes, there are aspects as well there that we need to think about and already doing".

Can anyone one remember the "concept" behind "ENTERPRISE WARP".... (believed to have been coined by the then IBM Germany based OS/2 Team) within the context of the current OS/2 World Foundation strategies; so, in this context (*ENTERPRISE WARP*); and, from that historical perspective.... the use of "overkill" may appear to be a misnomer;)

Re: Improvement of the Bounty System

Have the following been considered if the OS/2 World Foundation it to be truly run as a "business entity" and with particular reference to the "Bounty System"!

1. The Financial Management.

2. The Economic Management.

3. The Technical Management.

Just my two cents (skill set) from previous working experiences.  ;)

Oh yeah! "This is cool.  :)  8)  ;D At first I thought it was an operating system since it is 'like Voyager' (and eComStation also ;) ) and did not realize it was just a comparison to the name itself and not what it represented.  Grin" It this a "Thumbs Up" for such an undertaking; and, can you be quoted?  ;D

Hi Saijin_Naib, Re: "Thank you Sab, for linking me to things on OS2world I am already aware of! I'm so glad that you have a working JRE and SWT and you are using Lotus Symphony right now!" Hey, how else can one find it convenient to present what is apparently not being taken under consideration (hope this is not a deliberate attempt to sweep the dust "under" the carpet...) on the other hand is it fair for others to do your research for you?

Now, back to your assumptions with regards to "I'm so glad that you have a working JRE and SWT and you are using Lotus Symphony right now!"

This is what can be remembered and just in case it may be of interest to you.  ???

"Eclipse Enabler (eComStation and OS/2 only)

With the Eclipse Enabler package using SWTSwing and the Eclipse on Swing (EOS) plugin, the last Eclipse SDK 3.2.2 (Windows) can be used on eComStation (eCS) and OS/2.

The Eclipse Enabler package includes an installation script to create desktop icons, start scripts for easy usage and Eclipse on Swing (EOS) which includes SWTSwing. There are also some additional Java Look'n'Feel classes included.

Also, "To surmise, we have a ton of great projects that are not making progress, and the intent to progress does NOT equal progress, and so, we are dealing with stagnation. It's quite simple really". There is a saying that "The Longest Journey Begins With The First Few Steps"; and, if the sponsoring of bounties for "a ton of great projects" are indicative of those "first few steps" (and putting it however "Saijin_Naib" would like) then that "long journey" (though sometimes difficult) has begun for some.  ;)

Enjoy!

Your arguments appear to be without merits or your are not very familar with other sections of this OS/2 World web site since you have said  among other things; "I don't know why you think that stagnation is a good thing for this OS, but whatever floats your boat I suppose. Also, Symphony IS good, but its based upon SWTSwing which we do not yet have a good enough version to make Symphony run. OO is our only real option, and its a poor one in the shape it is in now".

While it is not known exactly what your current occupation is at this time and how many trade shows, seminars... you attend - what can be said to you is that if you were following the Lotus Development Corporation's strategies over the the years you might have known that they are having what is called a "Development Continuum" and from what was gathered quite recently is that the "Open" Lotus SmartSuite strategy which was embarked upon over a year ago has now morphed into Lotus Symphony and quite different from what you are saying here is what one is able to do with Lotus Symphony currently:

Quote; "Are you a Developer interested to learn more? The new IBM Lotus Symphony Developer's Toolkit for creating plug-ins and powerful composite applications is here. So, whether you are a IBM® Lotus® Notes® developer using LotusScript or a Java developer on Eclipse, you have the ability to leverage Lotus Symphony in your business applications".

"Get the Developer Toolkit"

http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.jspa

Also, this is what is known about SWT:

"SWT is the software component that delivers native widget functionality for the Eclipse platform in an operating system independent manner.  It is analogous to AWT/Swing in Java with a difference - SWT uses a rich set of native widgets.  Even in an ideal situation, industrial strength cross platform widget libraries are very difficult to write and maintain.  This is due to the inherent complexity of widget systems and the many subtle differences between platforms.  There are several basic approaches that have helped significantly to reduce the complexity of the problem and deliver high quality libraries.  This article discusses one of them, the low level implementation techniques used to implement SWT on different platforms".

http://www.eclipse.org/articles/Article-SWT-Design-1/SWT-Design-1.html

Additionally, to/in your mind... What do you think are the reasons why the following "BOUNTIES" were sponsored?  ???

1.  " SWTSwing ($175) - (2007.08.02)"

http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14799/71/

2.   "Eclipse.org Standard Windowing Toolkit (SWT) OS/2 Port ($125)"

http://www.os2world.com/content/view/340/71/

3.  " Native OS/2 Port of Lotus Notes (Hannover) ($50) - (2007.04.13)"

http://www.os2world.com/content/view/347/71/

4.  " OS/2 native port of Java 6 ($340) - (2006.02.19)"

http://www.os2world.com/content/view/337/71/

5.  " OS2 & eCS kernel ($75) - (2007.03.15)"

http://www.os2world.com/content/view/346/71/

All in all, it may take time; but, eventually we will complete the journey with OS/2.  ;)

Have a nice day!

You said; "What has that to do at all with the fact that our ONLY office suite worth anything is outdated, crippled, and slow? Nothing. I mean sure, if you are okay with using an operating system with crap software, be my quest". Firstly, here is a quote from another discussion forum for you; "However, we already have OpenOffice 2 and Lotus SmartSuite is still a far, far better suite. Symphony has a lot of catching up to do..."

http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/supportThread.jspa?threadID=2715&tstart=1

So, from the above - I did not have to be the one talking about it/them but someone else; and, that was about Lotus SmartSuite. How about explaining how much so the tasks that you have at hand are so *sophisticated* that an application like Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2 will not allow you to complete it adequately.  :-X

"Lotus SmartSuite 1.7 for OS/2"

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/smartsuite/os2features.html

All for your kind information about yet another *legendary* alternative Office suite for the OS/2 Operating System.  ;)

On the other hand; and, in relation to; re: "Judging by how A) outdated B) crippled and C) slow our releases of OO have been, they certainly are NOT saving the best for last". The OS/2 Operating System and Applications that run under OS/2 do not have to necessarily be just like the rest of the OSes (the question of "Different Strokes" For "Different Folks"...  ;D ) The reasons why it was read quite recently that there are now some 12,000 distributions of the Linux Operating System.  ???

"Cassini"! (like VOYAGER)... What a very *cool name* for a variant of the *venerable* OS/2 Operating System.  8)

Ditto. ;) "Lets hope that the OS/2 version became GA soon". The question from us at this end is whether or not the soon to be GA Version of "Open Office" has integrated - the Economic Rate of Return (ERR) Functionality that was previously mentioned in this thread.  :-X

Also, why does it appear that almost anything OS/2 has to be the "last" as if it is - "Saving The Best For Last?"  :(

Oh Yeah! ;D "!!!!!! Party On !!!!!!!!!!!"  ;D with ***OS/2*** like it is 1996. Wow! "Good Work Guys" - Keep It Up. ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion / Re: Improvement of the Bounty System
« on: 2008.03.27, 17:09:12 »
Hi "warpcafe, You said; "How many times do you want me to read it?
When I said "set up a bounty" it was meant ironically - as in a joke, you know?". Well, let me respond to you this way by telling you a little story which goes like this. I once worked with an Italian owner of an jewelry manufacturing company a few years ago and at the end of the day the floors were swept and the "dust" was placed into a container. For sometime we (the employees received a small piece of the pie) wondered why this was so and one day the owner remarked that it was all about a "bread" and "butter" issue; and, while it was not certain whether or not you had missed the "referral to the specific bounty that was set up" by yours truly (at the price of gold today) I just wanted to make sure that all the corners were "swept" (all details/information was taken into account).  ;)

Who to "bell" (take) the "cat" (bounty) if there is no "cat" (bounty) to be "belled (taken)"?

With regards to, "BTW: The company that is doing that COMFETAR stuff... when will it have a web page that is not "under construction"? Are you somehow linked to ORION, SabORION2? Now please let us talk about the bounty system improvements, will you?"

From the above reference to the "belling of the cat"... I am not quite sure how a company can go into business without a "product" or "service offerings"; and, to my mind (and, just to refer to an earlier poster) why invest your useful dollars in something that you are not getting any returns from while you have "rent" and other "bills" to pay? With reference to the "COMFETAR stuff..." (your guess will be as good as mine with regards to that relationship) you can be assured that as soon as the "bounty (open for increase) is taken" you are very likely to see this site go "live" (as COMFETAR LIVE suggests) from the "under construction" phase that is currently the case.

So, as the story goes... "Who to bell (take) the cats (bounties).  ;)!

Oh, Oh! "Talking about "money and "banking" (the home of OS/2)" Now, just what is this "guy" up to (think that you can figure out who the "guy" is from the below article and what he will be saying to this particular banking community?  :-[ )

"Government and Business Leaders to attend IDB Group Annual Meeting in Miami, April 4–8"

"Microsoft's Bill Gates and IDB President Moreno will hold special session" (If "Gates" is going to be there shouldn't the OS/2 World Foundation be there too to *monitor* things  ::) ::) ::);)

http://www.iadb.org/NEWS/articledetail.cfm?artid=4477&language=En

So, from "chennecke's" perspective regarding "Improvement of the Bounty System" it may not be all about the "money" management; but, the "technological development aspects/strategies" of/for the OS/2 environment; also, the indomitable will of the Kim Haverblads of the OS/2 World Foundation - moving forward.  :-X

Just my two cents.

Talking about "money and "banking" (the home of OS/2) - This "crazy" idea (indecent proposal ::)) has popped-up in my head having read "chennecke's" - "The most important improvement to me would be to reorganize the handling of money. Basically, this needs to be more transparent and practical.

Currently, you donate the money immediately when you sponsor a bounty. This money is not available to you anymore even if nobody works on that project for a long time. The transfer from the credit card / PayPal account should take place when the task has been completed.

If this way of handling payments turns out to be not viable I suggest placing the money on some bank account where it earns an interest so no actual value is lost due to inflation. This would require some kind of report to the sponsors..."  ::)

Here it is: Since IBM cannot release the Source-Codes for the OS/2 Operating System for the reasons IBM has stated - how about mandating the OS/2 World Foundation to solicit funds from anywhere in the world (Venture Capitalists, Sponsors, Pre-Paid Subscriptions...) for the specific purposes the enhancements to the OS/2 Operating System and to enable this Operating System to run on Modern Hardware and the creation of Automatic Updates Features of the Operating System for download and installation to users' computers whenever the updates become available (six-monthly...). Overall responsibility for the Management of Funds, Operating System Updates, Maintenance, IT Road Map... will rest with the OS/2 World Foundation. And , those are just the "crazy" ideas (indecent proposals) to be taken to Wall Street and IBM under mandate by the OS/2 World Foundation. ;D ;D ;D
