Utilities / Synergy for OS/2?
« on: 2009.08.04, 02:15:33 »
  Hi there,

This weekend a friend of mine show me a very nice program for those
using more than one computer at the same time: Synergy.
Synergy is client-server software that allows one to use multiple
machines with the same mouse and keyboard, exchanging between
computers just like they were virtual desktops.
It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux and I was thinking if
someone had already tried to port it. I downloaded it and tried to
build with Paul's environment, but the software thought it was
running on Linux and complained about non-existent XLib
capabilities.

  For those interested:  http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

Next test version is available ftp://ftp.Linking to this site is not permitted on our forums/os2krnlSVN1425_unoff.zip

It would be very nice if the file included an updated version of "WhatsNew". :)

  Pete,

Try SNAP in VBE fallback mode (VESA) and see if that resolves the External Video output problem

  I'll try this soon. :)

Install Genmac Base plus required driver from [RC6a_CD]:\CID\SERVER\ECSPKG\GENMAC2.WPI - it is a Warpin archive and should install with the minimum of fuss. Hopefully that will help with WiFi.

Thanks! I installed it, but then I noticed Positivo modified the WiFi configuration: the board used on this version of Wind is Realtek RTL8187... which is not supported yet by GenMac2. I'll do some tests trying with Windows driver in "unsupported mode" later.
BTW, after installing GenMac2, I am not able to use the network anymore, even connecting the cable (ethernet nic uses the propper driver and was working ok before installing GenMac2).

Check USB configuration using USBcfg, itmay help resolve Cardreader problem. If not post your PSD=ACPI.PSD line and also check what settings are enabled for USB in the BIOS. Usbcfg comes in Warpin  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/USBcfgb071-eCS-only.wpi and Zip http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/usbcfgb701.zip flavours.

Well, the cardreader seems to be just ignored. My ACPI line is simple: /APIC /SMP /CD. I'll use USB Config later and verify the configuration... but it seems it should work. AFAIK, the SD cardreader is just an adapter to a internal USB port.

  Thanks for the help!

Internet / Re: Firefox 3.x

Well, I think Robert has a point but only in that Black is a stronger colour than Grey. No blurring of grey text using this build of SM2.
How does it look to FF3 users?

Using Minefield 3.1b3 without IFE and running SNAP on Matrox G550. No blurring at all (besides the cool font-antialiasing provided by Cairo).

I found out that Peter Weilbacher has built TCL8.5.0 for someone on
a porting forum. I will try it at home and see if it works on openMSX. :)

It's weird do keep answering myself, but I believe it's nice to give some
feedback for others who are following this.

I was able to rebuild TCL using Paul's Environment and Paul's GCC4.3.3.
After that and a lot of struggles so openMSX configure process correctly
detected the installed TCL libraries and headers, openMSX compiled with
some minor warnings ... which seems related to the old GNU AS version
being used.
The result was a giant openmsx.exe (about 130MB) which is simply hanging
the OS/2 Window:

[K:\openmsx-0.7.0\derived\x86-os2-devel\bin]openmsx
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'openmsx::FileException'
terminate called recursively

Killed by SIGABRT
pid=0x10f3 ppid=0x1096 tid=0x0001 slot=0x00d2 pri=0x0200 mc=0x0001
K:\OPENMSX-0.7.0\DERIVED\X86-OS2-DEVEL\BIN\OPENMSX.EXE
Process has been dumped

I am trying to compile it without debug information and low optimization
to see if a smaller EXE cause a little less trouble... this is a slow testing
because the compilation process takes about one hour.
There is some progress here. I just don't know if I will be able to
make this pile of code into a working piece of software. :P

UPDATE:

Finished the compiling without debug information. EXE is now 16MB...
But the problem stated above persists. Besides the fact it says "Process
has been dumped", I found the dump nowhere.
Also, I do not even know where to start looking for the problem. I have
never been faced with such an ugly problem in a program that takes
forever to build (strangely, on Linux it will take too long only in the first
build, in the next ones it will build only changed files... on OS/2 it is
building everything everytime).

  Hello everybody,

Some days ago I noticed openMSX (MSX emulator, one can download
it here: http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/ ) should run nice on OS/2 plataform,
since it requires GCC 4.1, SDL and some other already ported libraries.
I had installed Paul's Build Environment, installed GCC 4.3.3 over it,
adjuseted gcc433.cmd file, made some configurations and finaly was able
to run "ksh ./configure". The result was:

---------------------------------------------------------------
Using value of MAKE environment variable: "make.exe".
Probing target system...

Found libraries:
  libpng:          1.2.10
  libxml2:         2.6.28
  OpenGL:          no
  GLEW:            no
  Jack:            no
  SDL:             1.2.10
  SDL_image:       yes
  SDL_ttf:         yes
  Tcl:             no
  zlib:            yes

Found headers:
  libpng:          yes
  libxml2:         yes
  OpenGL:          yes
  GLEW:            no
  Jack:            no
  SDL:             yes
  SDL_image:       yes
  SDL_ttf:         yes

  zlib:            yes

Components overview:
  Emulation core:  no
  CassetteJack:    no
  SDLGL renderer:  no

Customisable options:
  Install to:      /opt/openMSX
(you can edit these in build/custom.mk)

Please install missing libraries and headers and rerun "configure".
---------------------------------------------------------------

On the build help, it is said GLEW, JACK and OPENGL
are optional, but not TCL. I found a very old and outdated
version of TCL on hobbes and when I was coping its files
to the environment build (inside \EXTRA directory) I found
out they were already there.
Looking into gcc433.cmd, I found no reference to TCL
directories such as TCL_LIBRARY, TK_LIBRARY and
TCLLIBPATH. This is right?
Anyone has any clues about it?

---- UPDATE ---
I discovered version 8.4 of TCL is required. I pointed TCL
directories as:

'SET TCL_LIBRARY=k:/extras/lib/tcl8.4'
'SET TCLLIBPATH=k:/extras/lib/tcl8.4'

But it still doesn't work... still tells me that TCL library and
headers are not installed. :(

---- UPDATE 2 ---
Tried to build newer TCL library but... not luck. The build
process stops with an error about some missing declaration.

 ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Hello there,

I bought a "Positivo MOBO 1050", which is the brazilian version of MSI Wind and had already installed WinXP Pro, Ubuntu, eCS2.0RC6a and MacOS X Leopard. All in all, it is a great netbook and I am very happy with it. I made almost everything work on all OSs, but WiFi is not working on eCS. I had not installed GenMac during eCS installation process, and now I am wondering how can I add it. Also, the secondary video output is not working at all on eCS (it works ok on other OSs). It is a real concern to me, since I planned to use this netbook as a tool when teaching about Operating Systems.

The Status of Not Working Things (on eCS) are:
- External Video Output (I am using Panorama VESA)
- WiFi
- WebCam
- Synaptics Scroll (the touchpad works ok, but there is no scroll feature enabled)
- APM is not working very nice (when on bateries, it's not possible to change state to increase batery life)
- Card Reader doesn't seem to work.

Anyone was able to get solutions for those problems?

  My kindest regards,
  Daniel Caetano

Setup & Installation / Re: rc6a
« on: 2009.01.15, 23:02:15 »

Anyone knows the version of DANIS506 on RC6a?
I am trying to install it on a rescue partition on my home computer (Athlon XP, single core) with two harddisks (one is PATA and the other is SATA) and RC6a DANIS506 keeps saying it cannot operate my harddisks... I had tested both with and without ACPI on eCS installer boot.
The reason I am asking this is the fact I *am* using DANIS506 on my main installation (MCP2) and it works without problems. :)

I asked the FM/2 team and Gregg confirms what Andi stated.
I'm pretty sure it is.
U:\WATCOM\lib386\os2\tcpip32.lib
Gregg

Ah, thanks. It was missing an include also... :)
  #include <unistd.h>, something I believe doesn't exist in VAC++ world.
Not it compiled without errors (only a thousand warnings, but that's the first step... ehheeh)

  Thanks!

Programming / What libs should be linked to a TCP/IP app?
« on: 2008.12.20, 14:30:33 »

  Hi,

I'm trying to compile Squeak 3.5 for OS/2 to correct some bugs from the
published version (no text file export, for one). Since VAC++ is dead ,
I am trying to use OpenWatcom and I am experiencing a little problem
that makes me feel a n00b... :P
The problem is I was able to build it, but I was not find what lib I have
to link with the executable to resolve these functions:

  select
  soclose
  gethostname

I know they are TCP/IP functions, but I had tried to link several
libraries but none of them seems to implement these functions.
Anyone knows what library do I have to link?

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: New kernel
« on: 2008.12.18, 20:36:59 »

  Hi Pasha!

First of all, thanks for your work and also for your answer to my questions. :)

This kernel + loader can provide next output:
- to serial as IBM
- to screen/keyboard (don't ending keyboard)
- to other plugins for loader
See about "dbport" in os2ldr docs

Ah! :) I thought that config was about some kind of loader debug... no kernel
debug. :)
  I'll look for it soon.

Also you can create kdb.ini and place to it some string with letter g, for example:
This give you continue working with some crazy R3 application, OpenChat for example.

I understood what to do, but I am not so sure about why... :p But I'll read more about
it on the readmes.

About crazy and why you can see in kernel log (see in docs how give kernel log). Also check your config.sys for TRAPDUMP= setting. Must be TRAPDUMP=R0,xxx for user.

Ah, this is not there for sure.

And .... This is only beta and first beta ;-)
About speed. This fix is near with retail SMP kernel for speed.  And we are beleive it will be faster.

Pasha, the results are impressive indeed. After all, the problems were configuration problems,
not on the kernel.
About speed, this is something maybe you could answer us: there is noticeable difference
of speed (specially in boot time - at least on my machine) when exchanging UNI kernel to
SMP kernel on a single-core machine. Do you know the real reason behind this difference?
Also, you said you are improving speed of SMP kernel... this is related to the end of support
to older hardware (pre-pentium)?

Once more, thanks and continue the incredible work.

  Regards,

   Daniel Caetano

  Hi again, Pete,

Sorry, no experience of using ACPI with Intel chipsets - I was under the impression that most Intel chipsets worked OK with ACPI but there are obviously exceptions.

  :(

I have several systems based on nVidia chipsets, 1 * nForce430/MCP61 and 2* nForce4
These slightly different chipsets require different switches on the PSD= line.
nForce430/MCP61
PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP /CD /TMR /APIC /!NOD
nForce4
PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP /CD /APIC
I think my 1st suggestion would be to add the /!NOD switch to the PSD line there and see what happens. Might also be worth hunting through the ACPI docs to see if there is any mention of the chipsets involved.

No mention on this chipset (at least on the docs I had installed in this eCS RC4).
But you pointed it correctly: /!NOD killed the "boot freeze" bug... I didn't noticed
it solved the problem before because this hang was not always observed on IBM's
SMP kernel, but since OS/4 always froze in the same place, I could notice the !NOD
effect.
Now I have a new problem: with /!NOD my UniAud is not working correctly
anymore... it keeps repeating the first miliseconds of a sound, continuously. :(
If I can't fix this, I'll have to live with the boot hangs. :p

Do you have the following line in your config.sys file?
EARLYMEMINIT=TRUE

Enabled it also, but alone had no effect.

Hope something in the above helps  :-)

It helped a lot. At least, your and Roderick's posts cleared that the problems
presented on my computers (home and work) are not OS/4 kernel's fault, which
I believe it is a very good thing. :)

  Hi Roderick!

What they distributed was a patched 104a SMP kernel from IBM. Its a DEBUG kernel! This means when an application crashes the debugger inside the kernel kicks in (unless they patched that out some how).  The kernel is  trying to talk to the serial port. If you connect a serial cable to another system and run a terminal program like ZOC you will most likely get a debug prompt.
I could be wrong but basicly with every application crash your system seems to freeze. But the debug kernel is doing its job. Its just not documented in the docs this type of behavior.
So your system seems frozen...
In my view its also very silly to distribute a debug kernel to the general public. Its a debug kernel and it has a purpose. A debug kernel is clearly something you should not install on system "just as".

Oh, I know that debug kernel provides serial output, but never tried it myself... I didn't know about this "freeze" behavior.
That means the readme should mention this, at least. But I agree with you: is a debug kernel has this behavior, I do not
see the point of releasing it, since it is not safe to be used on a daily basis.
If the intent is testing the kernel in a "semi-production" situation, then the "release" version of the kernel would be the way.

   Thanks for this explanation.

BTW, do you believe the freeze (not trap) in the boot process is the same situation? I ask this because that freeze sometimes happens even with IBM's release SMP kernel.
