Setup & Installation / OS/2 under DOSBox ?
« on: 2009.06.01, 10:17:24 »
"UIQ 3.x port of DOSBox, open source DOS and x86 emulator. This version has been ported by our Discussion forum user tomaswoj from the S60 version by kolijoco.
You can use the emulator to run DOS, DOS games, and even Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or one of the small Linux distros. "

I wonder... is it possible to run any flavour of early OS/2 under DOSBox, Warp3 and 4 wich I used for sure can not, but what is with 1.x and 2.x ?
Anyone have some tip ?

Cyber, maybe that is only the flash specific libs while the other libs Flash depends upon are already downloaded for other apps? I've had to download 10s of pacakges of libs to meet some dependency for some small app its ridiculous. Good thing Synaptic handles it all for me.

Yes... You may have right, but anyway, i suppose that complete package with all dependecies for Linux is still about 10x smaller than Win version. :) I hope that OS/2 (eCS) version will be same small and effective and like versions 5 and 7 faster than Win-ones. :)

I like watching Flash videos, but being able to navigate flash-centric websites is more important.

Well, I wasn't check this for quite while, but last time have YouTube flash videos in FF window without any special setup. Slow connection and lazy-to-wait make me mostly download 'em and convert 'em in to my smartphone supported format, and watch later usualy using SEM600i or Linux based netbook.
Navigate trough flash sites isn't something I can convert and use later.  :'(
This is point where eCS/2 lose breath with competition, and I just can't understand how Serenity/Mensys ignore this; having E-COM-station named OS without usable modern e-com ability with outdated Java and outdated Flash. :)
As proven fanatic/2 8) I pretend that this isn't important.   But sometimes is !!!  >:(

Hello and welcome,  Your english is really strange, sometimes like translated haiku  ;), but keep in mind that for lot of people here english isn't native language. So Youre aren't alone. :)

AFAIK Flash 10 is still far from releasing even a alpha prerelease. And while others talk only about using it to watch video, I'm interested mainly in supporting newer flash games wich doesn't work with current Flash7. I'm know that my kids will love this.  :)
Also, anyone noticed that Flash 10 for Linux is 3.77 Mb, while same WinBlows version goes up to 62.7 Mb ???  ;D

You can create Funny area, and move such threads there.  :D  He was copying one of mine message in same way, short time ago.  Weirdo.  :-[

Che Guevara never used Windows.   ;D

As this thread is noticed by Serenity/Mensis people, and already spread to more than just Danis driver, there is one thing I want to point/ask to: improving USB drivers that they not use anymore slowest way of tranfer files, as I can see all other OS use maximum CPU utilisation and highest possible speed, and only OS/2/eCS use 'I can wait' philosophy. There is published hack (or patch?) to change this on certain driver releases, it should be given as option of choice for every eCS user.

There is also  sox - Sound eXchange : universal sound sample translator !
latest release: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/sound/convert/sox-12.17.1.zip

And to Ben: they can be veeery big, mostly when used on system/devices without unlimited storage abbilities, like mp3 devices, smartphones, laptops, netbooks, and for example on sites on internet wich is free of charge.

SNAP is much better than a generic driver. It actually provides hardware acceleration for many, many chipsets under OS/2 up until the ATI X300 or so and the Nvidia GeForce 6600.

Yes. Even some generic drivers work double faster than Snap driver (NeoMagic, MagicGraph) there is lack off support for SDL apps and for all video players.

   There is more than one way this can be fixed, but Scitech recomended this:

---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8
From snapos2.pdf:

Restoring Your System in Case of Failure

If SciTech SNAP Graphics does not correctly boot on your system, you
can easily switch back to the GENGRADD drivers to boot your system to
a workable state again. To revert to GENGRADD, do the following:

1. Boot to an Alt-F1/F2 command prompt mode

2. Edit CONFIG.SYS file and change

C1=SDDGRADD
to
C1=GENGRADD

3. Delete or rename the x:\os2\svgadata.pmi file

4. Reboot your system.

If that fails you will need to revert to VGA mode and reinstall your
prior display drivers (Alt-F1/F3 for Warp 4 and later systems during
bootup).

Note: Even if you use GENGRADD, you should still be able to run the
SciTech SNAP Graphics command line utilities, provided that you didn't
remove any of the SciTech SNAP Graphics files or the
DEVICE=X:\OS2\SDDHELP.SYS line from your CONFIG.SYS.
---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8---------->8

Also, You might try fastest way of reset to 640x480 without going to VGA by wiping your settings in \os2\drivers\snap\config.  Smart way is that You backup 'em first (copy to new name, then delete).

Also I presume that You have default statement in config.sys SET RESTARTOBJECTS=YES, this can cause similar problems in future: I recomend that You change this to SET RESTARTOBJECTS=STARTUPFOLDERSONLY.  This way, only programs that are in startup folder will automaticly start when boot.

RMB anywhere on desktop and select System setup, then  Screen icon.
It may vary, depending on graphic drivers installed. But Screen properties should be right place.
