Open Bounties / Re: OS2 & eCS kernel

There's something called osfree at
      http://www.osfree.org

who are trying to create a new os/2 clone using the L4 microkernel if you're interested. There's lots of activity by OS/2 standards  :) . The last SVN repository change was a few days ago on the 19th of Nov. They are at version 0.05 and trying to get the file system API sorted out.

Don't forget that CAIRO has already been ported to OS/2 and written in C. But it's 2D.

Unfortunately, OpenOffice 3 is just not a great app and quite buggy. Unfortunately, that's the only thing that is available on OS/2. And let's not forget that it's also a shared memory hog. Try starting it a few times and all the shared memory is fragmented and OS/2 requires a reboot.

The other downside is that the fonts that OO uses are not quite the same on windows, mac or os/2! I had a very long document which looks fine on say OS/2, but the formatting is completely different on a Mac and windows (and the mac and windows version actually formatted differently too!) I traced it down to New Times Roman not being quite the same on any of the platforms. Therefore, even file portability is an issue with OpenOffice. (I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that MS Office suffers the same problem on the Mac and windows.)

Personally, I never liked GUI type wordprocessor and prefer to TeX (not LaTeX  ;) ) to write my stuff.

I've used openoffice on multiple platforms: OS/2, windows and MacOSX. Originally, I had thought that the OS/2 version was very slow and buggy (e.g. the presentation and the writer apps) but they are just as bad on windows and on the mac. I believe that there are problems within openoffice and not with the port itself.

One suggestion is to use the svn on netlabs for your work. Maybe others might be interested to help you out.

I guess we 3 are the only ones left who still care enough to want this to happen. I guess I'll be going with option 2 & try to do a full rewrite. Performance still won't be as good, without proper agp support. Also, I think I'll focus on getting a software render up & running before I push on to hardware. The hardware driver for the new ddk will probably be something low like maybe a matrox 450 or something like that or maybe a SiS 6326.

Good luck! Perhaps the ddk can also work on a low end ATI Radeon card?

Hi Silvan,
If money is required, you really should advertise this better. I'm putting in 50 Euros.

I would prefer option #1, but my vote is for #2, as there are a lot of resources already on the internet.

Try to create an open source replacement of this ddk, with no IBM IP.

I second that.

Looking forward to all the updates.

Applications / Re: Firefox won't start

I've only seen this when I run out of shared memory. One test would be to see if OpenOffice starts on your machine --- its a shared memory hog. If it does, then at least this problem can be ruled out.

Hi guys,
I tried downloading the programme and the link gives an invalid redirection. Can someone upload it or point to a new link?

Thanks!

Looks like I've confirmed it myself :) . The panorama driver from betazone

PANORAMA.EXE 4342 kb     04/02/2008 10:56 am

compiled by Joachim Benjamins works in VBOX.
