Hi all,

---> snip

I did check that my shared memory wasn't exhausted, it had about 99MB available.

---> snip

  Thanks!

cytan

 How do you do this?

Like to get this info from my system  :-)

kind regards

Rainer

Hi Rainer,

Just get the programme: above512_001b.zip from hobbes and it'll tell you how much shared memory is used.

P.S. My machine's up 60 days today and everything seems to be running smoothly.

I think this is a positive news. Now we don't have any legal problem on porting Java to OS/2-eCS. But now we have the time/money/developers problems to port it.

Any comments ?

Hola Martin..

Just this comment: https://java7os2.dev.java.net/

;)

See ya

Hi,
It'll be great if JAVA 7 becomes a reality. Is this port currently active? I think JAVA is critical for OS/2. Note that there is a bounty for this port.

Applications / Re: WPS problems
« on: 2008.06.20, 18:21:48 »
The first thing to try is to disable flash. It keeps giving me weird crashes in OS/2.

cytan

When I was working with the following applications open: Pw FF 2.0.0.13 and the Shockwave Flash 7.0 r19, OpenOffice 1.1.1 (got with eCS 1.2) and FM/2 3.10, suddendly I got 2 beep and it was impossible to do everything with the WPS. I was only able to move the mouse.

The CPU's load on the eCenter was frozen at 21.3%. After having pressed twice CTRL-ALT-DEL I got a reboot. Here is the report of Popuplog.os2:

Just out of curiousity, does it use high memory like PmW-Fx does? I've had good success with PmW-Fx which does not eat up shared memory compared to the normal FF release.

Good to hear that Core2 Quad works with Ecomstation 2.0! I'm also in the market for a top of the line box and would like to hear experiences from other folks who have Core2 Quad working.

Could you please try to switch to some other module instead, which can use DIVE and/or WarpOverlay?
(I'd be interested if it's related to the usage of those subsystems, or if it's really Matrix-specific.)

Btw, do you have WarpOverlay installed? Did you enable the usage of WarpOverlay in Matrix module?

Doodle

No, I don't have warpoverlay although in the configure menu it is enabled if warp overlay is present. I'll switch over to something else other than the Matrix module which uses DIVE to see if freezing occurs. This will probably take another few weeks: I'm waiting to see how long I can keep OS/2 up on this machine which is used daily.

Doodle's ScreenSaver / Computer up for 30 days
« on: 2008.06.03, 18:46:19 »
Well,  after setting Doodle's screensaver to floating lock my computer has the following uptime:

[E:\]uptime
  11:43am  up 30 days, 0:18:13, load: 67 processes, 279 threads.

So, I definitely believe there is something wrong with the Matrix module.

cytan

158
Well, it happened again this morning after about 12 days of uptime, the Matrix module was frozen and although I could type in my password I couldn't get to the WPS (unlike my original post). Killing PMShell did not resurrect it. According to the Matrix screen which sometimes flashes the current time, it says 19:48. So, I'll assume that it froze on Saturday 03 May 2008 at around 19:48. I was here at around 21:00 on Friday and it was working then. Here's the POPUP.LOG message for PMSHELL:

SS:ESP=0053:0004f8d4  SSACC=f0f3  SSLIM=ffffffff
EBP=0004f904  FLG=00012283
*************************

I don't know whether the above helps or not. I'm switching to the floating lock to see if the screensaver freezes.

I've seen something similar as well... could it be something to do with WarpOverlay? I seem to recall it had a 14 day trial attached to certain versions...

Nope, I don't have warpoverlay. I'll find out whether it's frozen or not on Monday. It's running the Matrix Module right now ... or maybe it's frozen already :-).

cytan

160
I'll be away again for about 1 week next week, so I'll try again to see if the module freezes again.

cytan

Well, I'd do the following in this case:
- First, try to reproduce it.
- Then, once it's reproducible, change saver module to blank, and try it that way.
(This way we can make sure if the problem is in the module or in the saver.)
- Then contact the author (me :) ), and ask for help. He'll most probably send you a debug version of the problematic part to see what's going wrong, and then he'll fix it, if he can. :)

Good luck!

Hi all,
I don't know if any of you have seen this. I'm wondering this is a problem with Doodle's screen saver or it's something else:

I had my computer up for about 7 days at work with the Matrix module running. Then I was off on vacation for 7 days with the Matrix module running. When I got back in the morning, the Matrix module was frozen *BUT* there was a response to the keyboard for the password. I could get back into the WPS. However, the next time the screensaver came on, there was just a black screen. I could only get back to the desktop by killing the PMSHELL with watchcat. But PMSHELL did not fully come back I could not start *any* PMSHELL type programmes from the commandline, e.g. pmview although they did show up in the process table. I did check that my shared memory wasn't exhausted, it had about 99MB available.

Has anyone else seen this? Is this a leak somewhere in the screen saver? If this happens again, what should I document.

  Thanks!

My PC is way too modern for OS/2. That's why I have no choice but to virtualize it. I highly doubt eComStation supports Intel's P35 chipet, SATA drives, and a Radeon HD2900XT. It's a shame too, because if I didn't game, I would switch to OS2/eComStation in a heartbeat.

I'm using eComStation on a Gigabyte P35 motherboard and an Intel Q6600 quad-core processor - eCS supports modern hardware :)

Can I assume that it's ECS 2.0 beta with the latest ACPI and that all 4 processors are working? I'm really interested to know because I will upgrade my machine some time soon.

Thanks!

Rexx / Re: Help For Making a eCenter/xCenter Widget
« on: 2008.04.01, 18:42:57 »

This is really a pet peeve of mine. For amateurs like myself who just want to write a quickie it seems that we have to jump through hoops just to get a widget programmed. For example, I'd really like to have a widget which monitors the amount of shared memory (which is starting to bite me because of all the Mozilla apps and OpenOffice which seems to swallow up shared memory like crazy), but after reading this forum, I'm afraid that I'm not even going to try. If there is some brave soul who has taken the time to build a widget can write his experience up as an article here in os2world or os2voice, that'll help immensely for people like me to get motivated to write something.

Hardware / Re: Getting Trap 8's and Trap E's: Help!
« on: 2008.03.26, 15:37:40 »
cytan,

You may possibly want to underclock the machine's memory (or if overclocked, return it to normal). Much but the high end expensive memory is low grade memory that just eeks by the "rated speed" stamped on them - I've found some where it's not so much a matter of a bad module, but instead is a module that should never have been rated as high.

But yeah... a module failing memtest will wreak havoc with OS/2... I've gotten traps, lockups, video corruption (followed by lockups), programs inadvertantly crashing, lost data, you name it...

-R

I just yanked out the 2 sticks of dual DDR memory which supposedly has lifetime warranty from hardcorecooling. Unfortunately, they seem to have gone belly up :-(. hardcorecooling.com is unreachable. My other 2 sticks are Mushkin which are much better than the noname crap which I bought from hardcorecooling a few years ago. Thanks for the pointer about underclocking, but I'll buy another 2 sticks instead. Gotta keep this economy going :-).
