Article Discussions / OSFree
« on: 2009.09.03, 18:36:01 »
Hi,
I'm amazed that OSFree is alive! It is interesting to have people working on the next generation OS/2. Since OSFree is really an L4 microkernel hosting an OS/2 personality, and Voyager is supposed to OS neutral (I think ...), perhaps the two can be the next generation OS/2.

I'm also surprised that there is a FreePM that is being written too.

What really worries me is ACPI is at 3.16. Comments?

Programming / Re: gdb for gcc 4.4, why never ported?
« on: 2009.08.05, 11:15:18 »
Hi,
I'm just curious why gdb 6.8 was never ported to OS/2 except for the old emx gdb port? Is there a technical reason why gdb cannot be ported to OS/2? For debugging without printf's it's really nice to have a real debugger.

I remember myself asking similar question a long time ago. It seems that most OS/2 developers find gdb far from being a good debugger. You can use other debuggers with gcc compiled code (although you have to specify correct flags), like VAC debugger and some other debuggers available on hobbes. For me (a non-developer) each of them was superior to gdb.

I think it'll still be useful for people without access to VAC++. I've used gdb and don't find it that bad!

cytan,

I use Ghostview but it could be much better - like having the pages popup open all the time and a few other things.  I keep on hearing about Lucide  but it , like Panorama, the new flash 10 and Open Office, appears to be only for eCS and I have OS/2 on all my machines here and have no need to purchase eCS just to get the addons.

Now what else would you add to my list of needed items?

For ghostview: what do you mean "pages popup open all the time"? I use ghostview all the time and am pretty happy with it except for the shared memory leak.

Another thing which I really would like is to have a newer version of XFree86. Our version is just too old!

Here's what I know about what you said:

Update of native Java   --- Agreed. This is also critical for me.

A better front end for Ghost Script --- ghostview is the frontend. Works well for me BUT there is a shared memory leak! If you want to read pdf's Lucide works great for me.

An update to Odin ---- the flash 10 port now being done is updating Odin. Hopefully will enable more win32 programs to run

Video drivers for new cards  --- Panorama is supposed to be good enough. See Panorama thread.

A native version of Open Office  -- We already have this. The beta version actually works quite well. I'm using it everyday.

Don't know anything about the following:

A way of using MS network card drivers
A viewer for MS Reader e-books.
An update of the WfW input and output filters for Describe.

Hardware / Re: Is it worth getting a SSD drive?

I don't think you need to disable the swap file. I have 3GB of memory and OS/2 does not swap at all with all the apps that I run concurrently: OpenOffice, Xfree86, Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, z-player, VBOX/2 with 512MB allocated etc.

The only reason I wanted to get an SSD is to complement the i7. There are two separate problems as I see it:

(1) Does ecomstation work with i7 and the Asus P6T SE motherboard? (Deluxe is just too much for me)
(2) Loading only the OS and apps onto the SSD drive would really not utilize the entire drive. Ecomstation fully loaded I think takes up less than 8GB of space. All my apps I think would be < 10 GB. Which means 20GB is more than enough. However, the drive which I'm looking at, the Corsair P128, which one of the fastest drives on the market is 128GB! This means that I'll have more than 100GB left. Should I use it for data? Is it safe and reliable?

Comments anyone about P6T and I7 with 3GB of DDR3 memory and Corsair P128.

Hi CDRWsel,
Is your SSD installed on an intel i7? If so, how does ecomstation work on it?

I have the  G.Skill  Falcon 128 Go S-ATA II  as boot drive with JFS and yes, it is a real improvement agains raptor (150GB) 10000 rpm drives which was my previous HD. No tuning needed and very very fast !

note: do not use defrag on this kind of disk and never use it near full size value to allow a good cell optimization by the internal algorythme. The drive is too fast to see any differences between before and after defrag and this may reduce lifetime (MLC has limited cells write count)
Raptor and over HD have limited power on/off count !

Remy

So  just
 format /FS=JFS
and that's it? Wow, much less work than I expected!

Did you partition the drive, or did you keep all 128GB for ecomstation?

Hi guys,
Is it worth getting a SSD drive for installing ecomstation rather than a really fast drive like a velociraptor? Reading the OCZ SSD drive forums, at least for XP, there's lots of tuning required.
See http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50376

Anyone has comments or experience with ecomstation and JFS installed on a SSD drive?

Thanks!

Setup & Installation / Re: Why can't I upgrade Win-OS/2?
« on: 2009.07.26, 03:05:47 »
If ReactOS can replace the WinOS/2 subsystem, that would be so fantastic that I'm drooling. However, there's no access to source code, and there are so few developers around, it's unrealistic. A more realistic approach would be to port the WPS to ReactOS. Maybe that can be Ecomstation 3.0?

Hi,
Just to let the author know, the How-to-install_from_USB_CD-to-EeePC_v2.zip is not on hobbes. It seems to have been deleted. Doing a search yielded no results.

USB / Re: USB 3G EVDO Modem
« on: 2009.07.12, 22:56:50 »
Just to confirm this observation. When injoy idle times out, I can dial and reconnect  without a problem. I think the thing to do is to figure out what injoy does differently between idle time out and user hang up. I'm going to email injoy support to see what they say ...

USB / Re: USB 3G EVDO Modem

I suspect there may be a hangup string because when I tell injoy to hangup, it always says that it tries to do it for 4 times and says:

failed to hangup modem!

then forces an exit. Why it does this, I don't know. However, something interesting is that when injoy hangs up when it detects that there has been no activity (say 15 minutes), I can reconnect and get to the web without a problem.

O, I've also tried hanging up and disconnect, reconnect the USB modem, but again the connect to the web only lasts maybe about a minute.

I'll have to investigate this further ... unless you guys have an insight as to what I should try.

cytan

cytan, so far I've not been able to find the technical information on what chip set the device uses so the following is based on guess work.

Because the device requires a special setup string to activate it there is a possibility it also requires a special string to shut it down.  If that is the case then there is not much chance of it working a second time without being hard reset.

I once had a USB modem that appeared as a comm device and would work with OS/2 the first time it was plugged in but not again unless it was unplugged and re-plugged.  Looking at the communication stream sent to it by the supplied software -windows- I found it needed extra characters at shut down.  I was able to add them to the hangup string and had no more problems.

If that is not the problem and you have to reboot OS/2 then I suspect problems with the USBRESMG.SYS and/or USBCALLS.DLL in which case we need to find out where the failure is.
