Hi Cris,

I've now had a chance to look at the SweetHome3D package.  In theory it should work if it just uses java files, BUT, the windows install has 4 DLLs in addition to the jar files and the linux install has 3 SO files in addition the the jar files.  What these extra files are I don't know - maybe platform specific information - if so then we have a snowballs chance in hell of it working.

If you are interested you might try e-mailing the developer and seeing if he can supply a platform independent zip file of the jar files for us to test.

Garmin,

Since you can boot the machine from a CD then use one that allows you to edit the CONFIG.SYS of the boot drive and remove the autocheck statement in the IFS=JFS.IFS line.  That should allow you to boot and use Jrescuer.

Since you have Warp 4.52 you should have the 2 CDs - boot cd and install cd - the boot cd will allow you to boot to a command window from which you can run tedit to edit the config.sys on the boot drive.  Only remove the autocheck statement from the ifs line or you won't be able to use Jrescuer - no ifs no see partition.

Hi Cris,

The latest Image editor works here without problems, the Sweethome3d is a different animal - will have to wait until I can get to a windows box to get the jar files.  Why, oh why do people wrap up java files in stupid installers and not offer a simple zip file?

My program object has the following settings:
path & file name: PE.EXE
parameters: e:\jre1-5-0\bin\javaw.exe -Duser.home=l:java-apps\image-ed -jar imageeditor.jar
working dir: l:\java-apps\image-ed

The above assumes ODIN is installed and on the path and libpath (my working boot drive is e: and java apps are on l:)

It would help if you gave the names of some of the programs that are giving you problems, that way we could test them.

I run Java 1.5 using PE.EXE and so far it works with everything I've thrown at it - including the Java Open Street Map Editor.

Andi, I think the point Thomas is trying to get across is what do the developers need to know.  Obviously it must go beyond 'it doesn't work', the big question is why?  Until we know what they are looking for it is very difficult to help.  I don't have eCS but I do have access to a wide range of systems in the hands of friends and clients, a lot of them running OS/2, which means I might be able to use a live CD like some of the linux distros, except with eCS, to get the information.

That being said, until there is a clear statement of what information the developers want we will get nowhere.

Garmin, I think you may have more than disk problems if you can't boot to a command line from the boot CD.

I currently run Warp 4.52 FP15 on an AMD machine with 2 GB RAM.
as far as I know the highest FP for MCP/ACP is 05 or the 06 beta, so the question arises 'what do you have there?'

If you have the CP2 boot CD you should be able to get to a command prompt and use TEDIT to edit the CONFIG.SYS on your boot drive, assuming it isn't the JFS one.
One thing to note re Jrescuer - if it isn't registered it won't work - I found that out a few weeks ago.  I ended up restoring from backup as the only way to solve the problem.

For those who have access to modern machines on a more frequent basis (dealers, service providers) it would be handy to have thta tool an a bootable CD or USB thumb drive:
- you see a new machine somewhere
- you plug in the drive or boot it from the CD
- you collect the ACPI and system information
- you upload it online or save-to-file and upload it later

Now that is the way to go!  If such a tool was available - without having to install anything - then, I for one, could go round to various clients and get the information on about 30 different systems.

I think restricting information gathering to the installed base is very limiting.

Mayhem, one thing you could do is get OS2MT http://www.os2mt.tk which will help you with upgrading the system to the latest available - including kernel.

With what little information you give I, like roderick, wonder if it will do what you want giving that you appear to have a memory leak.

Setup & Installation / Re: How to change to UNI kernel
« on: 2009.04.29, 02:13:30 »
Remove the system, hidden and read only attributes from os2dump, os2krnl and os2ldr and copy the uni versions over them.  You also need to copy the uni versions of doscall1.dll and pmdd.sys.  Also I think you may need to rem out the ACPI statement in config.sys.

Thanks Sigurd, I now have somewhere to tell people to go to see the OS working.

I have had one comment from a friend - 'what is he doing?'  I had to finish up watching and describing to him what you were doing - well most of the time I could see what you were doing.

Is it possible to do voice over saying what you are doing? - something like this very amateur video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSo3icNEBNE   If so then your videos could become the standard advertising for our OS.

CDBOOT error is caused by cdboot being fragmented.  There could be a number of reasons for this - it got messed up when I ziped it up, it became fragmented when you unziped it or the e-mail process could have been the problem.

Anyway you have it working now which is good.

Hi Paul,

I must say thank you for all the work you have done.

Knowing that programming isn't your main job has inspired me to try and see if I can do anything with DELUGE, a bittorrent client, even though all I learned about programming was in assembler over 40 years ago.

Roderick, I thank you for your report.  It does show that work is being done.

I also get a sense that you are frustrated because you are wearing too many hats at this time.  Maybe it is time for you to ask the wider community for help - I also know that would most probably result in a total lack of response, but you might get nuggets of insight like that of The Blue Warper in the post above yours.  How much of that would work only the project co-ordinator could say, here I speak from my days of project co-ordinator on various government construction projects round the world.

Regarding the need to keep people informed of progress, maybe a short monthly newsletter sent off to newsgroups and other places where there is an interest.  It also gives you the chance to 'blow the trumpet' at every advance.

Again from my perspective, I can see a few possible ways to improve productivity but I will not put them here as they need more information than I have at the moment.

If you think a part retired engineer - who is finding himself with more work than when he wasn't part retired - can possibly be of help e-mail me (ivanjt (at) free.fr).

And again I thank you for the report as I now know not to give up hope.

Cytan, the answer is maybe.  I imagine the OS/2 part will but the big question is will the addon ACPI etc.

Blond Guy, what you are saying is that eCS works - IF you select the hardware carefully.  That is OK if you are buying new but, and it is a big but, what happens when the client wants to use what they have already?  You don't sell corporate customers pie-in the-sky.

As Doug pointed out the approach to the development of the ACPI layer is wrong - making it work for individual chip sets will work - IF you have all the time in the world!  ACPI in linux works for most machines out in the world - if they can do it why not OS/2, or the case in question eCS?

Much as I would like to see eCS go forward I'm not holding my breath - 4 years plus to get a part working ACPI layer is a bit much.

Hi Peter,

Two things come to mind:
1- If you have access to a USB floppy drive use that in conjunction with the CD drive (I have used this approach of a couple of laptops that didn't have a floppy drive).
2- Make a bootable CD and use that (This is the system I now use on laptops).

If you need information on making a bootable OS/2 CD e-mail me (ivanjt (at) free.fr) and I'll send you the instructions I used.
