Hardware / Re: Slow boot process
« on: 2008.03.04, 15:03:28 »
Hi,

I've attached the file \mptn\bin\setup.cmd

thanks! ...yeah, ok. The relevant part is
Code: [Select]
dhcpstrt -i lan0 -d 0which means interface lan0 is set up for DHCP and the DHCP client waits for 0 seconds to get an IP.
That again means that it (the DHCP client) continues to get an IP in the background and it should not cause any kind of wait/break during bootup.
But I wonder... isn't there any kind of "press Enter to continue"-message during the bootup?

Just for the fun of it... how about editing your setup.cmd and
- put a REM in front of the "dhcpstrt..."-line (meaning it should read "REM dhcpstrt..." afterwards)
- add a new line that reads "ifconfig lan0 169.254.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0" (without quotes)
save the file and (re-)boot the machine?

This assigns a static IP to your lan0 interface and will tell us if there is any problem with DHCP (because now, DHCP wouldn't be used any more)... To revert, simply re-edit the setup.cmd, delete the added "ifconfig"-line and remove the "REM" in front of the dhcpstrt -line.

Alternatively, you could also change the "-d 0" part in the above line to "-d 10" for example.
This would enable 10 seconds of delay for the DHCP client to get an IP from the DHCP server (if there's any) and will show you a "countdown"-style message with a "press Enter to continue" afterwards if the client didn't get an IP assigned. If there's no "press enter..." message shown, it means that the DHCP request would have been successful and that DHCP is not an issue but the lockup happens later.

I am sorry if that is all in vain and EPW.EXE really turns out to be the culprit... but let's see. ;-)

One more question:
Is the genmac wrapper helper driver the first line in your config.sys?
(IIRC it's something with "helperw.sys" or similar, sorry, don't have eCS machine at hand...)
While we're at it - why not simply post your entire config.sys?

Thomas

Applications / Re: Need New Database
« on: 2008.03.04, 14:40:07 »
Dennis,

I don't know DBExpert. I think it's a tool that hides programming and SQL statements from the user by prividing an integrated database with reports and interface dialog facilities? I mean a la "MS Access"...?

Can you explain what it does - and what you used it for? Perhaps that might help in finding a possible solution for your needs. For instance... the old (free) StarOffice 5.1 comes with an integrated database stuff that has also reports and dialogs. However I was never able to dig into adopt the things to my needs.
Anyway, it provides a wizard that helps you setting up a database and tables, create data entry/query dialogs and also reports - all with a somehow intuitive method of drag-n-drop / click-and-select... perhaps that's what you are looking for?

Thomas

Hi Todd,

I think there's two things that have an impact on limitation.
First -as you said- the harddisk/controller driver(s), secondly also the file system driver you chose for the partition/volume.

To begin with #2, here's in regards to JFS (from ecomstation.com):
Quote
Does JFS have any limitations ?

The JFS filesystem was designed in response to modern requirements. It has a sufficient margin of safety to work without serious problems for some time.

    * maximal volume size - 2 terabytes.
    * maximal file size - 2 terabytes.
    * maximal files quantity - 4 billions.
    * maximal filename size - 256 symbols.

JFS for eComStation is ready for usage on SMP machines. Today's processor manufacturers have finished the megahertz race and are concentrating on SMP and multi-core systems development.

For the hardware/controller drivers, here's what Daniela stated in the danis506r182.zip package doc on hobbes:
Quote
...
- supposed to work with drive capacities up to 2 TiB (OS/2 ADD limit), tested with drives up to 2 TiB now
...

So in theory, it should work. :-) However... is that 500Gig drive a built-in one or are you using any kind of USB to attach it? I can't tell for possible limitations that arise from the usage of USB drivers...(if any?).

Hope this helps, regards,
Thomas

« on: 2008.03.03, 14:46:13 »
Hi,

I also agree that my first guess would be some part of networking.
One more question: Is there any WiFi NIC detected and/or are you using GenMac driver(s)?
Reason: I had the problem that everything works fine with my notebook until netbind is executed and fails to connect correctly with the GenMac-driven WiFi... so my question is just to exclude WiFi and GenMac from the list of possible causes...

To finally determine what driver is loading/loaded when the problem happens do the following (Alt-F2 method):
When eCS is booting, you'll have a small white rectangle in the upper left of the (otherwise black) screen. (Also known as the "boot blob"). THAT is the moment to press Alt+F2. The boot process will continue and show all drivers that are loading...

eCo Software support service invested several thousand euro into books preparation

So they've spent several thousand euro... aha. For books on eCS. In russian.
Wow, Eugene really knows how to "make friends in a minute"...

I really, really hope that this was money they (the "russians") collected themselves.
Otherwise I'ld be more than interested into getting to know *who* that dumb nut was, that gave him money to burn.

Couldn't these "several thousand euro" perhaps (me thinking really, really hard...) had been invested into something better than russian books? Why not invest it into the optimization of russian software?

Does Eugene really believe what he says "The books play important role in the development of eComStation market". Hell - what eComStation market? Wake up, Eugene!

Okay Eugene, so you're the great marketing man for eComStation, ok, then ONCE FOR ALL give us the numbers and facts we expect from a marketing man:
- How many copies are you targeting to sell in Q3 and Q4 2008?
- What are the distribution channels and how much is intended to be sold (in %) via each?
- How is the campaign composed (online, print...)
- How is the market share being calculated, how the effectiveness of a campaign?
- How many potential customers exist in the target group?
- What is the profile of a typical potential user and how do you reach them?
- What is the support framework like, I mean, other than your personal phone number?

Eugene, if you want to play like the big fish, you gotta know the game first.

I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm, but from a "money" perspective - forget it. If you're set up like this and don't have any clue on how things work in the real world (tm), please shut up. There's increasingly people that are getting *upset* by your oral diarrhea than would ever be attracted by your visions.
I am really sorry to tell it like that, Eugene, but you start pissing me off with these things that you don't think about the consequences obviously. Really. I'm not kidding.

And here's another one:
"* this increases the turnover of resellers (extends selection of goods - good addition to eCS box and electronic shareware products)"
Oh, what the f*** man!! I can't believe it. Eugene, listen, I don't know what life is like in russia but around here, people don't just pull dollar bills out of their arses... eComStation users are already paying a hell of a money compared to Linux users. Heck, even compared to Windows users. And you now come up with something that people can buy and give them nothing in return! I mean - yes: NOTHING. A book with FAQ and intro... this is crap! Crap, crap, crap! I expect such things FOR FREE, Either print and/or online, but PAY FOR IT???
And by the way: "Promotion stuff" is for free. I don't see any purpose in that books than promoting eCS. So, come on - why should I buy it? Next, even if I buy the book - how outdated is the information by now already with updates flying in? If I got you wrong on the contents of the book(s), then, sorry - GIVE MORE DATA.

Hi all,

I'm not sure - this is only guessing... but does someone know of a "professional level" link between one person from Innotek and some other person at Netlabs? If there is, I think the chances are better to have Innotek give stuff to Netlabs than to "the community"...

just my 2 cents

Do you have access to eCS 1.2mr or the later 2.0GA?
Honestly, I don't know what you're talking about. :( Are those better releases ?  And where exactly am I supposed to have access ?

Hi,

please be patient with us... it's not too often that we can welcome "eCS beginners" here... which leads to the fact that we use acronyms we've got used to over the years/months... you are absoultely right on asking.

eCS 1.2 is the successor to 1.1 (don't ask about changes...) and the "MR" stands for MediaRefresh. AFAIK it has some updated drivers and 3rd party applications on it. Then, after the 1.2MR distro, the next bunch of releases were "RC"s (release candidates) for the 2.0 version of eCS. To put it like that:
  • eCS 1.0
  • eCS 1.1
  • eCS 1.2
  • eCS 1.2MR
  • eCS 2.0 RC1
  • ...
  • eCS 2.0 RC4

To my knowledge, there is no 2.0 "GA" ("General Availability" = the final retail version so to say) available so far... that is something everybody here is hoping/waiting for... (or, ehh.. folks, did I miss an announcement?)

In my mind, starting with 1.2MR release, the improvements are mainly focusing on newer hardware (mainly mainboard/chipset/ACPI-related). With your hardware and to get a first impression of eCS, the 1.1 release will just do. Notice that if you run into problems with USB devices and have come across some issues with software in general, chances are very good that a more current release will solve them.
Personally, I relied on 1.1 and 1.2MR for years and it worked like a charm.

I can't give a satisfactory response however to your second question - "where can I get them".
AFAIK, I did download the eCS 1.2MR media from the Mensys Website... however this requires one to have
  • a valid license for the 1.2 release
  • registered with the customer pages at Mensys
to be able to access the download pages that list these releases.
As Mensys people gave RC CDs away for free at Warpstock 2007, I wonder why the download of the RCs is reserved to registered users with update subscription only... perhaps someone here knows a download site.
Hope this helps.

Oops. I forgot:
"Mensys" is a dutch software distributor and the driving financial, marketing and progress force behind eComStation - their website is http://www.mensys.nl but they are also keepers of http://www.ecomstation.com (and ~.biz, whatever).
"Warpstock Europe" and the original "Warpstock" are user conferences for OS/2 and eComStation that take place every year - see http://www.warpstock.org for the US/Canada show and http://www.warpstock.eu for the European counterpart accordingly.

Feel free to ask for more URLs... people will gladly spam you with their lists of newsletters, tips & tricks- sites, etc... but better in a different thread.  :)

Greetings
(and welcome, BTW)

Applications / Re: Sun wants Innotek
« on: 2008.02.13, 19:11:05 »
Hi,

hmmm... tough question.
Basically I'ld say that if there were no IP infringements happening so far, why should there be now? As to the future of the "other" stuff from Innotek (what about the libc.-stuff BTW?) I haven't got the faintest idea... it depends on:
- if Sun has bought all the rights for everything from Innotek
- if/how the stuff was (L)GPL'ed already before (they can't turn that back, can they?)
- if something is/was Innotek very own IP (instead of ports / contribs)

Depending on all this, we might expect different stages of:
- extinction (no public distribution anymore, no support)
- abandonware (D/L available, no source, no support)
- public+proprietary release a la StarOffice / OpenOffice
- release to the wild with no further support from Sun (what license model?)

In the absence of any details on the contract, everything is possible...
Personally I think that the "cheapest" way for Sun is to release everything they don't need/fear to the community with keeping the licenses already in place or making them (L)GPL (or similar if source-distro).
This way, they won't have to mess with petitions, IP lawsuits, or setting up complicated EULAs on websites for people who download "Sun products".

Who knows? Perhaps they leave all this up to Innotek to take care of?! Would that be better?
(Given e.g. the unchanged status quo of the font engine for... ehh... quite some time.)

Thomas

Hi,

as I said they've removed OS/2 support "more or less". ;-)

Indeed VPC runs OnE (OS/2 'n' eComStation) as guest OS... and although MS officially lists OS/2 as supported guest (shouldn't they include a copyright notice to IBM somewhere BTW?) they did however actively drop the support of OS/2 as the *host* platform (compared to what VPC was before it became VPC... refer to "Connectix").
Although I must admit that -if memory serves- OS/2 host support wasn't done by Connectix themselves... but who cares: It no longer is in there.

Let me put it that way: In my mind they (MS) have weighted efforts against benefits on removing ALL OS/2 support from it in the beginning...  but then they realized that people who run OS/2 as a guest somehow have to buy a license for the supported HOSt platform (=MS OS)... so why should they care?
( Perhaps they even faced that at that stage, they were lacking skills to understand the superior technology :P of that virtualization software to be able to remove OS/2 guest support?... )

OS/2 support in VPC is basically a legacy that stays in because it's technically not impossible to do so.
;-)

Hi folks,

although I'ld love to see some kind of benefit to us in what is happening with Innotek and Sun, I must somehow lower your expectations, I'm afraid. The last time when "a virtualization stuff was bought/sold", the buyer (a Redmond-based company BTW) decided to break the product in pieces, wash out the parts, reassemble them under the new name of "VirtualPC" and managed to kill everything in it that was related to OS/2. More or less.

Now, we're talking about business, the big money.
The only reason for Sun to buy this is to gain market penetration vs. Microsoft (VPC) and VMWare or whatever. They give a s**t on OS/2, what counts is the Win/Linux/Mac part in VirtualBox (although on their site they explicitly name OS/2 in the list of guest OS in the announcement details).
And as each "supported" OS requires at least some minor part of manpower to get it supported/regression tested or even mentioned on websites and readmes, this mean COST. Cost is not a bad thing, as long as it is seen as an investment (thus "Cost" vs. "Benefit"). Now how much "benefit" (not even talking about money) would it bring Sun to support OS/2 and eComStation? Don't be romantic and think about it again - how much? Aha. Compare that to the cost. Aha. Got it?
Better expect Sun to drop "official" OS/2 support.

On the other hand - it's open source.
The community is free to participate -yawn- in ongoing (sigh) support of OS/2 and eCS in VitualBox.
(Which means something like "both of the remaining 2 developers that really know what's going on and who have an active interest in eCS..." - I'ld love to be contradicted however...)

And please:
If news will pop up in the next couple of months abouot what was enhanced for eCS and OS/2 don't get back on me to tell "So you see Thomas!! You were wrong - they still support us!". Just wait for another 6 months then. This is when the delivery pipeline from the current state of Innotek has dried out.

The really intersting thing is the commercial and license details about the "other stuff" from Innotek. I'ld cut my finger to get a sneak view at the contracts - what does Sun exactly buy? The whole company? What happens to the intellectual property of Innotek with the products that Sun hasn't got its focus on? Can Innotek release them to the community "before" the sellout? Will Sun try to get rid of it ASAP by releasing it? Do they prefer NOT to disclose but simply erase that stuff? Because: Who knows - who can tell if Microsoft, Adobe, whoever might find suspicious "code parts" in the IFE regarding TrueType support... you might say "they didn't do it until now" but, hey, things have changed: Now a "big fish" can be sued.

Finally, one thing I'ld like to say is that I'm very happy for Innotek as a company and for the poeple who make their living from working for that company. Not only does this deal show how much "appreciation" they get for their efforts with VirtualBox, but it also promises to give some kind of security for the future of Innotek as a company.
...unless someone from Sun comes up with a plan on how to save on cost... but that'll be happening not sooner than 2009.

Greetz,
Thomas

Hey Chris,

good to see you still do care.
The way you are responding here shows how much professionalism it takes to own a (good) reputation.
Thanks four your valueable inputs to this thread...

I only wish you won't regret it. ;-)

Works.  ;D

Indeed, xfix is based on Henk Kelder's checkini. Not cleanini, which is by Carsten Arnold.
While xfix didn't work out the intended way (as expected - but who knows, better try...) cleanini  8) did the trick.

For those who are about to do the same... note that there were two typos in the suggested commandline
"cleanini /c /delall /multiplass/ /restart"

...obviously (as one might think) it must read
"cleanini /c /delall /multipass /restart"

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, you all saved the day.

584
Folks,

thanks for all the contributions.
In the meanwhile I had found the "official" homepage of Carsten Arnold, the author of cleanini. It's
http://www.ca-arnold.de/e/index.html

Mind you, I seem to remember that Ulrich Moeller (initial author of xWP and WarpIN) mentioned in some part of the readme/helpfile for XWP that the incorporated "ini fix" mechanism is based upon a piece of software by another author... and I guess it's cleanini that was incorporated... I might however be wrong and will check.

That would basically mean that (if the above is true) I don't need cleanini itself but just keep down both shift keys when the WPS (with XWP) is starting up to get access to an appropriate fix mechanism. Again, I will need to check. As weekend is approaching, chances are that I will be able to find some time this evening.
But I'll keep you in the loop anyway...

+++ FOR HEAVENS SAKE I FOUND IT!! +++

...meaning: perhaps not the solution, but the place where I read about it:
In the eCS bugtracker (-slapping-my-forehead-) of course!!

For those who have access:
- In total, it's 2 tickets, namely 0001620 and 0001839

leaving the wishy-washy besides, here's the core of it:
Quote
I wish to concur with David that when using Carston Arnold's Cleanini55.zip and the command "Cleanini /c /delall /multipass /restart" the problem of the drifting icons goes away. I have confirmed this in both RC1 and RC2. This also includes the use of eCenter and eComCenter (WarpCenter) together on fresh installs.

On a side-note, they're talking about icons shifting DOWNwards, not UPwards... but any solution that stops icons from shifting in whatever direction is appreciated to get rid of the annoyance. So let's see.

Me thinks that this is a setting (I assume it to be somewhere around the "GRID" crap) that is enabled by default in eCS 2.0 installs and then never vanishes correctly. And that's why I didn't had it before as I never turned on the option that I presume to be activated by default now in 2.0 RC's... however just guessing here... will let you know if it works once I have time to test-drive the cleanini stuff (wherever that my be).

Regards,
Thomas
