Hi all,

I was always feeling lucky to be not affected by that behaviour, but now it has hit me with a vengeance:
At every startup of the WPS, the icons get shifted upwards, giving me a WPS scrollbar at some time. I know that I had read a question about that very same behaviour some time ago but I seem to be unable to find that again. So I'll ask here...:

How to turn that annoyance off?
I never experienced that before, but since I'm running eCS 2.0 RC3 on a T41 I do.
I have snap (professional, not SE) installed, along with the latest XWP.
(Like in all time before, when the effect didn't happen)

Regardless of what xCenter settings I use, regardless of what "SET SDDICONSIZE=" I use and regardless of xPager or not... it happens. What -the **ck- am I missing? Any ideas?
Has anyone experienced that too?

TIA,
Thomas

General Discussion / Re: Port of K42?
« on: 2008.01.29, 19:27:59 »
Hi Cris,

(here goes the crap I wrote... ;-)
That's not quite correct. "Porting the WPS to run on K42" is quite a nonsense... the WPS needs a whole set of subsystems to work: in a word, it needs an underlying OS. K42 is a kernel, not an OS. It is something an OS can be based on.
(snip)

I certainly know. And I know that WPS is not OS/2 (while we're at it...).
"Porting the WPS to run on K42" is of course nonsense too (regarding the nonsense "port of K42 to eCS"), the intention was to keep it as short as possible so that BWG understands the principles behind why it simply does not work to "port K42 to eCS"...

So for the big picture from my point of view: ...what we we *could* have is:
"A recode of the WPS from scratch for an operating system that uses a K42 microkernel".
And that certainly requires an appropriate operating system in the first place, huh?
...which implies several layers of architecture (including loads of complicated inter-dependancies that do not exist) around the hardware and kernel, and last but not least a CONCEPT of how the window management works, including graphics ("driver") access, system objects ("model" if you want), with everything based upon the assumption that someone knows how to code and compile the myriads of parts of an operating system on/from a *different* operating system (as the target one doesn't exist so far), based on the the assumption that we overcome possible binary (and other) incompatibilities between dev-platform and the run-target platform regarding compiler and build environment.

And I'm not even talking about device drivers for [whatever-port]-attached [whatever-dumb-crap]-devices from manufacturers that do not only not document their dipshit interface but also most of the time are too damn stupid to adopt generic OEM-strings in files to their own device-IDs... and IF they do, they simply swap parts of their components 3 times a year for saving 0,0001 cent per piece and forget to deliver updated files with it.

And once we have all this up and running, at the end of the day - we have a wonderful whole big piece of NOTHING, since at that point in time we still don't have the most ridiculous little piece of application software for it, including browsers, games, office stuff, picture viewers or even pocket calculators.

Or to use the car example:
Basically it's about building a whole new car from scratch with the only thing supplied is a gearbox, but targeting to make it run on a new kind of fuel and in every kind of terrain.

How does that sound?
:-)

Hi,

porting the K42 kernel to OS/2|eCS is much like comparing apples with pears.
K42 is a microkernel. OS/2 is an operating system that uses its own (micro)kernel.

So the bottom line is, that if you want "K42 with eCS", you would have to port the WPS to run on K42, not the other way raound. But then, even if someone manages to overcome the technical obstacles (compiler? DLL? presentation layers...) that gives you a WPS on a kernel and still not an operating systems that is able to do ANYTHING like running whatever programs or accessing files in filesystems... and talking about programs: They will have to be made to run on that Kernel and in that whole execution model.

To tell a long story short:
If we're lucky, we might see Voyager run on K42 in some decades from here.
If you want to get it sooner, spend approx. 12 Million bucks to Netlabs to enable them to hire the required people on a project-dedicated basis.
...or: Give ecosoft 1 Million bucks. They will make a good advertising vor "eCSK42" vaporware on TV, deliver some stuff nobody understands and burn the money for a new launchpad.

Applications / Re: IBM Visualage Cobol for OS/2
« on: 2008.01.18, 11:15:01 »
Hi Paul,

no, it's sitting in my bookshelf since three years and I didn't ever found the time to start messing around with it. As I'm not used to work in COBOL other than with a text editor and the compiler results ;-) I'm afraid that the whole IDE concept will puzzle me... :-))

But good to know that there's someone out there in the eCS community having COBOL experience...

Hi,

just guessing here... but did you (un~)check the option "printer-specific format" to see if that has any impact?
It must be somewhere in the printer's properties tabs... on/around the "spool" stuff... sorry, have no OS/2 at hand right now... perhaps this has some effect? I found that sometimes it does the trick (for certain printer models and connection variants). Hope it helps.

Hi gang,

for the memory leak issues, I would like to point your attention to the article
http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0207H/feature_3.html
and the follow-up part 2
http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0507H/feature_3.html
on the VOICE newsletter, which both handle memory details of OS/2|eCS in general and also with a special focus on Mozilla-based browsers... I can't tell for the font-related specifics however.

Hope this helps (to some extent)

Thomas

Hi Melf,

X11 was the just the thing I checked: But when it got to the point that I had to install the software in order to check the contents, I stepped back and tried something different - which didn't work out. (I had a system backup of an installation with x11 somewhere but wasn't able to locate it).
Now your response came just in time to avoid me having to install x11 again (which I actually almost never used) - anyway, good to know that your problem is solved.

Hi gang,

not much to be added from my side -as I never worked on that subject- but a hint:
The live streaming was set up for the developers workshop 2007 in Amsterdam and according to what I saw during the few hours I attended, it worked. Not sure about _how_ it was done though.
And yes: Netlabs is the correct place to contact. if you happen to get no response within a reasonable time it might be that Adrian is just busy (like almost ever ;-) ) you could also try to speak/mail to Christian Langanke (he might know who can help you in detail) or perhaps also Thorolf Godawa (or Team OS/2 Trier) because I saw them messing around with webcams during European Warpstocks... ;-)

Hi,

yep, the translation was somehow... "weird". ;-)
But I managed to understand what it actually should mean. I will scan my Hob CD - it's quite outdated but as a real lot of software from Hob is on it, chances are that there is such a file. I'll give you an update ASAP.

...still wondering about the man and the sheep. Hm. :-)

Hi melf,

from the web translation service I understand that you are looking for a swedish keyboard map for hoblink... which product do you mean? Their x11? I could check on my Hob CD at home, perhaps I got it somewhere...

Hi again,

what a coincidence! I just read from the VOICE announcement of Uniaud 1.1.4 RC4...:

"Changes since 1.1.4rc3:
Fixed loss of IRQ after suspend/resume.
  ..."

Another indication of what might go wrong with devices/drivers when resuming... :-)

Hi,

well all of the following is subject to hearsay and guessing...
I was told that there are some issues with power management on modern systems using ACPI and eCS.
What I know of is that some devices (especially network cards) don't re-initialize correctly when the system is resuming from standby, which *might* have an impact on system stability... ;-)

Hi,

well there's still the Bulk Data Encryption hard disks... as you might know, as you posted in the thread
http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,462.0/
:-)

No idea however WHAT encryption standard it uses... a safe one I hope. ;-)

Hi Jürgen,

I fully agree with you and your feelings about what's going on in our country.
You see, I think it's quite unlikely that there will be a "federal trojan" compatible with eCS|OS2. :-)
One more reason to not run Windows, Linux (or Mac - are they on their radar too?).

Although I actually have nothing to hide to the law enforcement agencies, I somehow still want to decide at least whether or not my data (digitalized documents, ideas...) are available to them or not, that's why I want an easy way of storing data in a secured way, e.g. TrueCrypt.
It's like if they question me and I decide to not say anything: I "hide information". The same should be possible to me in matters of electronic information - even if I can get jailed for hiding it: I don't want to always hide it, I just want to have a CHOICE to do it if I want!
(Recht auf informationelle Selbstbestimmung, et.al.)

The problem for me on the other hand is that THEY cannot guarantee that once they have sneaked around my data by their spyware tools, THEY might have a security leak, leading to my data (at their systems) being published or misused by a 3rd party. Also, every backdoor which THEY use can possibly used by anybody else as well, if he knows how to open it. That is why I feel really sceptical about their ideas.

And as usual: Politicians have an idea and come up with a law without having consulted at least ONE professional who knows what the impacts are (and who knows what he is talking about, contrary to them). Our politicians have a habit of putting good ideas into bad laws because they didn't "review" the bullshit by an expert (see "Scheinselbständigkeit" stuff in 1998...)
If they were to get professional IT consulting, they would have dropped that idea a long time ago...

Thomas

Setup & Installation / Re: when? install eCS 2.0 -
« on: 2007.11.13, 11:01:05 »
Hi gang,

regarding JFS:
I was a hard-core fan of HPFS (also ~386) ever since and sceptical about JFS...
Back at Warpstock Europe, Peter Koller told me that JFS is definitely worth checking out. So right after I was able to get a copy of RC3 from Joachim Benjamins (from Mensys) I gave it a try...

and I'm overwhelmed by it:
On my T40, the bootup process performs CONSIDERABLY faster and overall performace is just lovely.
About stability on heavy load I can't tell, as I didn't had much time to actually WORK so far... ;-)
But it's definitely worth checking out, especially considering the fact that it's BOOTABLE JFS.
( BTW: One of the reasons for me not to install JFS earlier was the drawback of it being non-bootable. )

Regards,
Thomas
