Multimedia / Re: Radio through the internet
« on: 2008.05.01, 12:31:23 »
I tried to listen to this internet radio: http://radio.rtl2.fr/player.html, but it didn't work. I got the message "Click
here to download plugin". The plugin doesn't seem to be available. Does anybody know a solution?

Thank you very much.

Hi

I do not get a "Click here to download plugin" but on the other hand nothing seems to be playing. Should I click somewhere on the page to get a radio stream to play?

You may want to look at the mplayer plugin how to http://www.os2world.com/content/view/17999/1/ but add the later plugin rather than the plugin supplied with the mplayer package  http://www.7xx.org/komh/npmp_test.zip

Hi Robert

You are missing an important factor in the "how to": it is NECESSARY (Sorry to shout but this is important) to update the mplayer plugin with this package http://www.7xx.org/komh/npmp_test.zip

This came to my attention via the os2 uk user group - Yes, we still have an active mailing list :-) -

"

Having looked through the "how to" the only bit obviously missing is the instruction to update the mplayer plugin with the above package.

Have you noticed that instructions (how to pages) are like software - it usually takes a few goes to produce the optimum usable/working version  :-)

Hi BigWarpGuy

As is usual with most big companies the person who responded probably does not know anything about the product and could not be bothered to do more than look for OS/2 in the list of operating systems that you can download drivers for.

And, of course, OS/2 is absent from that list...

I am not sure which model you were looking at and picked on the Phaser 8860 to test my above theory - mainly because it states solid ink in the brief sales blah and others do not.

Sure enough, there are PPD files available for that printer for linux CUPS and Windows XP (32 and 64 bit) - possibly others but these are all I checked for.

That suggests to me that my theory is close to correct as it is possible to add PPD files to the OS/2 PSCRIPT.DRV driver creating a postscript driver for said printer.

Maybe you want to buy the printer and check out if you can get it to work  :-)

Hi Jan-Erik

I have not tried your script but it looks like it could be useful - especially for those of us reluctant to try configuring "ported from *nix" software ourselves.

Could I suggest that you offer it to KO Myung-Hun, mplayer porter, for possible inclusion with the next mplayer package? His email is in the mplayer docs.

He may also have ideas for extending and/or fine tuning the script.

Pete and melf,

Thanks very much!!! All worked wonderfully! If one of you can combine the info you posted to make an article "Installing and using mPlayer as a plugin for Firefox" that would be great! If you dont have time, I can combine your posts to do that for us... lemme know!

Working like a charm!!!

Thanks again,
Robert

Hi Robert

Please feel free to use anything from my posts that has been of help when putting together a "how to" get mplayer plugin working with Mozilla browsers - I use Seamonkey, not Firefox; and an "unofficial" (PmW) version at that  :-)

When reproducing the "tips" please note that I did find those in a mozilla newsgroup and think there were posted by Steve Wendt - you may want to double check the ng thread so that credit is given to the author. You may also find a few more odd tips in that thread worth including.

Hi

The above problem is most often cured by a simple reboot.

It rarely requires a system rebuild.

Maybe you want to post what the TRAP is and when it happens?

Thanks Pete, but so far, it's still doing exhibiting the same behavior as before. It simply does not seem to want to work :C

Hi Saijin_Naib

Presuming you have the 3 software packages mentioned in my previous post ie current mplayer, the "test" plugin and the wincodec package installed OK we should be able to get it working. Earlier versions of mplayer and any previous plugin are *Not* capable; you *Do* need the wincodecs for a lot of video formats.

I have the wincodecs in a subdirectory of mplayer ie mplayer\codecs  -  you can leave them within the "Windows-Essential..." folder which should be within the mplayer\codecs directory ie mplayer\codecs\windows-essential-...  Obviously any codec related paths in config.sys or %HOME%\.mplayer\config files need to point to that directory

I have the following config.sys file entries:-

REM ***** mplayer variables
SET MPLAYER_PATH=H:\MMOS2\MMPLAYER\mplayer\MPLAYER.EXE
SET MPLAYER_CODECS_DIR=H:\MMOS2\MMPLAYER\mplayer\codecs

My %HOME%\.mplayer\config file contains these entries:-

# Write your default config options here!
cache=12288
cache-min=30
user-agent=NSPlayer/4.1.0.3856

If you need to force use of DIVE add this:-

vo=kva:dive

Usually mplayer seems to be able to work out what to use though.

My Seamonkey plugins directory does not have any of the NPOS2*.DLL files in it

I think that about covers my installation and configuration...

Now we need to know what your configuration is like?

For the benefit of any(every?)one who has not had a look through the Mozilla ng thread I mentioned previously here are a few possibly useful tips I found there, cannot remember whose... possibly a Steve :-

And here's some tips that someone might like:

1) If you copy a TTF font to %HOME%\.mplayer\subfont.ttf, the OSD will
be able to show text.  The smallest one I had was Trebuc.TTF, and that
works fine.

2) MPlayer will make a playlist out of all the files on the command
line; for example "mplayer file1.mpg file2.mpg file3.mpg" or "mplayer
file?.mpg" or "mplayer file*.wmv"

3) You can define mouse buttons and keyboard keys to do lots of
different things.  Here's my %HOME%\.mplayer\input.conf:

MOUSE_BTN2 vo_fullscreen
PGUP pt_step -1
PGDWN pt_step 1
+ volume 5
- volume -5

This sets mouse button 2 to toggle fullscreen, PgUp/PgDwn to go forward
and back through the playlist, and ± to raise/lower the volume by 5%.

4) Any command-line options can also be specified in
%HOME%\.mplayer\config; here's some useful ones:

really-quiet=yes
fixed-vo=yes
colorkey=0x000001

This turns off most of the (verbose) messages, makes the transition
between videos in the playlist smooth by keeping the video window open
and fixed size (works best with fs=on), and sets the colorkey to a shade
of black instead of the default bright green.  Note that you don't want
to use solid black (0x000000), as then any console windows or other
black areas on your screen will then be transparent when over the video.
Also note that color keying is relevant for overlays, so it probably
doesn't do anything if you are using DIVE output.

5) As discussed previously, if you are getting jerkiness or lags in the
video, but you have a fast connection, you should set/boost your cache
and/or cache-min values.  Note that this causes a delay before it starts
playing video...

Doooh, so close. I now get "Click to play" and then "Mplayer running..." then immediately back to "Click to Play". I have similar entries to melf in both my config.sys and my C:\HOME\DEFAULT\.mplayer\config files.

Hi Saijin_Naib

Either you are trying to play a clip that, as mentioned previously, does not want to work due to the way the server is configured to stream the file or you have mplayer not quite configured.

Here is a working server: http://news.bbc.co.uk/  then click on the "Watch News headlines" link which should open a webpage telling you "We are sorry but you don't appear to have any compatible media plugins." I selected the Windows Media option and then clicked OK.

The "Click to play" window appears and I click it... and wait while mplayer fills a proportion of cache before it, eventually, starts to play.

Does that happen for you?

If not come back here and we'll all have a go at your configuration  :-)

Apologies to everyone for failing to respond to all the queries that my post generated. I have had a busy day and did not get any time to "play on computer" until around an hour ago. I see most people have this working now though so my help was obviously not desperately required  ;-)

I got a lot of mplayer tips/info from a discussion on news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2 in the thread Media Player Connectivity and suggest that others may also benefit from looking through that thread.

Have fun  :-)

Hi cyber

Looking through these posts I must ask you to post buildlevels of os2cdrom.dmd and os2dasd.dmd ie

[H:\OS2\BOOT]bldlevel os2cdrom.dmd
Build Level Display Facility Version 6.12.675 Sep 25 2001
(C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1993-2001
Signature:       @#IBM:10.163#@  Device Manager Driver for CDROM
Vendor:          IBM
Revision:        10.163
File Version:    10.163
Description:     Device Manager Driver for CDROM

[H:\OS2\BOOT]bldlevel os2dasd.dmd
Build Level Display Facility Version 6.12.675 Sep 25 2001
(C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1993-2001
Signature:       @#IBM:14.104#@ IBM DASD Manager
Vendor:          IBM
Revision:        14.104
File Version:    14.104
Description:     IBM DASD Manager

The above builds work fine

Some earlier builds of os2cdrom.dmd are absolute crap and I seem to recall that 1 of those crap builds was part of the eCS1.2R install...

You do not mention applying any updates to eCS1.2R - have you applied any fixpacks? (I think fp5 is later than the 1.2R code level) Use the ECSMT tool to download and apply fixpacks/updates - you probably need to download and apply the latest eCSMT 1st though.

Another thought is that you mention RSJSCSI therefore you have the RSJ software installed? Do you have it setup so that it does NOT "hog" the burner? Read the DANATAPI.DOC for several possible solutions. Note that just REMming the RSJSCSI.SYS line is not a cure...

Hope the above is of use

IIRC, the mPlayer plugin does not yet work. What you need to do is install the MediaPlayerConnectivity plugin and assign various file types to mPlayer. Someone, please correct me if I am wrong - because I would love to have mPlayer working as a Firefox plugin directly - without the need for MPC.

Robert

Hi Robert

Correction: the mplayer plugin (url in previous post) works fine with some vids and not at all with others. Seems to depend how a website streams the vid...

What are you doing wrong? - wrong plugin or older mplayer build? Do NOT bother with the pugin supplied with the mplayer package as that is fairly much a non-worker - get the later test plugin mentioned before.

No useless old NPOS2*.DLL files hanging around in the Mozilla plugins directory causing problems?

Do you have the mplayer win32 plugins installed correctly?

Did you reconfigure MPC to not play those file types that the plugin can play?

There are probably more questions based on answers to the above...  :-)

And... don't forget to read the docs - possibly something missing from Saijin_Naib's exploration of mplayer  :-)

Hi Melf

Have you checked the MPC configuration is setup correctly?

The message you get is indicative of MPC not being set to play the file (or possibly mime) type involved.

And - Why are you not using mplayer with the updated plugin for most vid clips?

Applications / Re: Compilers for development on ecomstation
« on: 2008.04.23, 21:30:37 »
Hi Paul

WDSibyl provides a fairly good RAD package very similar to Borland's Delphi (somewhere around Delhpi2/3 time period). I used it to put together a USB configuration tool that I think I can claim has been of help/use to a few people http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/usbcfgb7a.zip

However, it does seem that WDibyl has some limitations. The main 1 I find is that currently the documentation is (mainly) in German which means a few problems with interpretation for non-German speakers like myself. Yes, translation websites can help a little but often introduce a lot of confusion (and nonsense) due to technical terms involved.

Also larger projects can run into problems where when adding new items to existing forms it becomes impossible to give those new items a meaningful name ie I recently looked at adding a RadioGoup containing 2 Radio buttons to the USBcfg app and found that I was stuck with RadioButton1 and RadioButton2 as names - the system would not let me change those to anything else...

To overcome that means starting a new project with a blank form and building each page of the app again - and then hooking up the existing code to that new project. A bit frustrating and time consuming...

However, having had a moan about the WDSibyl drawbacks I also ought to add that I would not know where/how to start building the app in c/c++ despite having qualified as a c programmer years ago; must admit that I have not really used that skillset "in anger" at all since the last exam of the c course  :-)

I am probably just being a bit lazy but the visual building of an application interface is very easy with WDSbyl - bearing in mind the possible problems that you could encounter at a later date when trying to add/change an existing application's interface.

Another frustration I've come across is trying to make use of my USB Flashdrives or thumbdrives (ie Transcend 1Gb and 4Gb and 1 x Lexar 256Mb) that at the best of times I can only see and utilize 32MB of available data and I can not use nor access files created/saved from my XP nor Linux boxes? Need more time reading up and searching through the forums to get this working but I am impatient these days - where does time fly to?

Hi John

I'm using eCS1.2R currently and have absolutely no problems with using FlashThumb/Pen/Keyring/Hard USB drives.

Sadly I cannot say the same with the eCS2.0RC4 install I have recently completed - looks like the LVM engine and several other important bits got backleveled and no longer work as they should. Hopefully the eCS guys will get that sorted before release...

Anyway, presuming that you get an eCS system with working USB the Help and FAQ included with USBcfg may help a bit - or a lot  -  with regard to getting USB drives working  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/usbcfgb7a.zip

Here is one thing that should have never been a issue, what is the problem with the damm dots in a file name.  I just downloaded the latest foxfire, then had to rename the file just for the archive to work on the zip file or any other file with to many dots in the name?  This goes for many other applications (Tor, Warpvision, firefox).  I may be very off based on this, and if I am please tell me how to correct this problem!

Greggory Shaw

Hi Greggory

The easy fix is to setup Associations for whatever you use as a zip/unzip frontend.

As an example I use the OS/2 "native" Zip Control frontend available from the downloads section of http://www.RPFSoftware.com

The Properties for the executable, ZIPCNTRL.EXE, now has these Associations in the Current names section

*.*.*.*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.*.ZIP
*.*.ZIP
*.ZIP

I'm sure you can work out from the New name entryfield and the Add button on that page how to achieve that  ;-)

The above works fine - I have yet to meet a filename that is along the lines of 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.ZIP but have no doubt they will arrive at some point and I will then need to add another line to the above  :-)

Have fun  :-)

Hi Rrm

After having a giggle at the concept of a Windows system displaying what sounds like it could be the OS/2 Warp boot splash screen I had a think and came to the following conclusions in order of "most likely":-

1] An entertaining hoax post designed to give people like me a giggle  ;-)

2] As suggested by Warpcafe: someone has had a fiddle with a bootup file and introduced the OS/2 Warp splash screen - got any OS/2 using friends?

3] A new Windows virus that promotes OS/2 by introducing the splash screen - hopefully it does not do anything else...

4] Your computer has realised there are better operating systems than Windows and is demanding that you install OS/2 - or the latest incarnation of OS/2 which is called eComStation and works well with modern hardware, see www.ecomstation.com

A final thought does occur: If this is a 2nd user system then maybe it has had (still has?) OS/2 installed. Not sure why the splash screen should suddenly start appearing though...

Let us now the result of your investigations.

Pete
