Open Bounties / Re: Icon routines in OS/2

Hi Chris (aka wpswizard)

I have been doing a little testing to try and establish why WPSWizard does not work here.

I have tried installing WPSizard since upgrading mainboard, cpu, ram and graphics card and updating the acpi driver with the same results as when using the previous hardware and earlier acpi driver.

I have submitted a bug report on the problems encountered and look forward to working with you to rectify whatever the cause(s) of the problems are.

Storage / Re: File Access Information?
« on: 2008.04.10, 02:25:57 »
Hi the_face029

If you use the WPS to open a folder in Details View you can see a column called Last Access Date which displays when the file was last accessed.

I think that data is stored with the files EAs (Extended Attributes) - but I could be wrong.

Games / Re: Games on Ecomstation
« on: 2008.04.08, 14:11:27 »
I have not yet found any OS/2 game that would not run on eCS.  So far everything I've tried runs fine.

As for Dos and Windows 3.1, all of that compatibility is still there, eCS still runs DOS better then DOS, Windows 3.1 better then Windows 3.1...

Hi

And DOSBox runs DOS games better than the eCS(OS/2) DOS VDM - due to the choice of "fake" soundcards so the games can make noises  :-)

DOSBox for OS/2 is here  http://www.joschs-robotics.de/dosbox/

Chris is doing a lot of work with his WPSWizard, and since the other project regarding icons (i.e. PNGDesktop) is commercial, I think we should award the bonus to Chris Wohlgemuth (sp?).

Bye
Cris

Hi Cris

Maybe it would be best to wait until WPSWizard actually works?

So far I have tried all the 0.6.1-a* releases and can only say that it has potential but due to the problems of system lockups/crashes that it introduces all releases have been uninstalled rapidly.

Hopefully there will be a usable version of this software sometime...

If it comes down to it, I can just use FAT32. The partitioning software I used (PartedMagic) supports a billion filesystems. I just hope I don't have to use that dfsee thing.

----- snip -----

Hi

The fat32 driver available for OS/2 based systems is on www.netlabs.org

If PartedMagic does not understand LVM systems it will cause problems - that is where DFSee comes in, fixing the problems other partitioning software cause  :-)

It is also the only tool currently available to OS/2 based systems that can fat32 format a drive which comes in handy from time to time.

Yes, DFSee "looks like a nightmare to use" but a perusal of the relevant docs and lots becomes clearer.

Probably the main joy of DFSee for "non-techie" users is that with their Registration comes a good deal of support. When a drive starts "misbehaving" in some way (eg Partition Tables not matching) all a user needs to do is follow instructions to produce the necessary logs and email them to support. The answer is usually fast and resolves the problem.

Hi

Just in case you get "bitten" by the OS/2 bug but want to use it on fairly modern hardware you should be pointed at www.ecomstation.com

eCS(eComStation) V1.2R will install on 64bit systems - OS/2 does not, or not without a bit of hassle - and has a few updated bits.

The "due sometime but currently overdue" eCS2.0 will include, amongst other things, ACPI support which seems to be necessary for recent/current mainboards.

It is possible to get access to the ACPI drivers and other "Reserved Features", including eCS2.0 beta downloads, by purchasing a Software Subscription when purchasing eCS1.2R. I think that also gives a free upgrade to eCS2.0 when it is officially released.

As I said, Just in case you ever need to know...  :-)

Hi

I do not have virtualbox installed but it looks to me as though you simply need to boot to a command line, copy some files and edit the config.sys and startup.cmd files. However, there is a good chance that if you are not familiar with OS/2 this could seem like a mountain/molehill to climb  :-)

My interpretation of your posted "Updated installation instructions:"

- boot to the OS/2 command prompt (alt-f1 while the white blob is displayed during early boot, then f2)

This means that you start the boot process but when a little square blob with OS/2 appears in the top left corner of the screen, just as booting starts, you need to press Alt and F1 keys.
This should bring up a blue screen (but not a Windows BSOD :-) at which you need to press F2 key.
The system should then boot to a command line allowing you to perform the following actions.

- copy all files into the directory c:\OS2Additions

Presumably you have some files on floppy/CD/DVD that are needed in c:\OS2Additions (the boot drive involved here is C: I take it?) so a command something like this:
[C:\]copy a:\additions\* c:\OS2Additions\*
should copy the required files. Change drive letter:\directory to suit your system.

- make a backup copy of c:\os2\dll\gengradd.dll

Use a command like this:
[C:\]copy c:\os2\dll\gengradd.dll c:\os2\dll\gengradd.dll.bak

- copy our gengradd.dll to c:\os2\dll
Use a command like this:
[C:\]copy a:\gengradd.dll c:\os2\dll\gengradd.dll

- copy libc063.dll to c:\os2\dll
Use a command like this:
[C:\]copy a:\libc063.dll c:\os2\dll\libc063.dll

You are going to need to use an editor for the rest of the instructions so I suggest we use TEdit, a rather basic but capable text mode editor.
[C:\]tedit config.sys
should start the editor with the config.sys file open so you can do the following:

- comment out the 'device=c:\os2\boot\mouse.sys' line in c:\config.sys (put 'rem' in front)
This line should be changed to:
REM device=c:\os2\boot\mouse.sys

- append 'device=c:\OS2Additions\vboxguest.sys' to c:\config.sys
Add this line to the end of the config.sys file:
device=c:\OS2Additions\vboxguest.sys

- append 'device=c:\OS2Additions\vboxmouse.sys' to c:\config.sys
Add this line to the end of the config.sys file:
device=c:\OS2Additions\vboxmouse.sys

At this point you should save this file (config.sys) by pressing F2 and then press F8 and add c:\startup.cmd to the EDIT line as you need to edit that file as well.

- add  'c:\OS2Additions\VBoxService.exe' to the start of c:\startup.cmd
Add this line to the end of the startup.cmd file:
c:\OS2Additions\VBoxService.exe

Use F2 to save the file and then F3 to quit the editor.

- reboot
An instruction which can be instigated using this command:
[C:\]setboot /b

Hope the above helps

Applications / Re: IBM OS/2 4.52 MCP2 AND ECOMSTATION 2.0
« on: 2008.04.05, 16:54:14 »

Is the kernel in Ecomstation 2.0 the same as in IBM OS/2 Convenience package 2 ie version 4.52 ?

What is the differance between IBM OS/2 4.52 and IBM OS/2 Client 4.52 , are these the same software ?

Is the MCP2 4.52 version CD bootable and if so is this installable on the current ( latest ) hardware ?

 Paul

Hi Paul

I do not have eC2.0 yet but know that the ACPI driver involved requires the 14.104a SMP kernel, which is the last of the IBM kernels I believe, if using a dualcore cpu. That kernel package is available from both ecomstation and http://www.os2site.com/sw/upgrades/kernel/index.html

I think that IBM OS/2 4.52 and IBM OS/2 Client 4.52 are the same package - unless IBM OS/2 4.52 refers to a server package.

I believe the MCP2 4.52 version CD is bootable - but I decided to go with ecomstation instead so do not know from experience...

No, you cannot install MCP2 4.52 to current hardware if that hardware involves an x64 cpu.You could install by hooking the hard disk involved to a 32bit cpu system, installing and then transferring the disk to a x64 system. There are a couple of other steps involved but you will need to Google newsgroups for relevant posts.

Of possible interest: eCS1.2R and eCS2.0 install on current hardware including x64 cpu based systems :-)

Applications / Re: WPS shadows - shortcuts not working...
« on: 2008.04.04, 14:20:35 »
Hi Todd

I think I would try these actions in this order to see if the problem gets cured:-

1] Edit config.sys and change the jfs.ifs line to Force chkdsk on the possibly dirty drive E: - may as well do the rest while we are at it...

IFS=C:\OS2\JFS.IFS /LW:5,20,4 /AUTOCHECK:+E+G+I

Reboot and go for coffee; maybe a full meal with a nearly 500Gb drive to check  :-)

My reason for suggesting the above is that it is possible for the system to hang/crash leaving the filesystem "dirty" but without the "dirty" flag - I have had this happen several times when testing beta drivers and can state that the drive is usually useable but may not respond well to WPS commands, apps on the drive cannot be started from Desktop objects; very much like your problem. The standard IFS= line does not run chkdsk unless the "dirty" flag is showing. The above line forces chkdsk regardless of the "dirty" flag.

That may cure the problem if not...

2] Run checkini (WPTools) followed by a run of cleanini ( http://www.ca-arnold.de/download/cleanini55.zip )

If the problem still persists I would then be stuck on what to try next...

Hope 1 or both of the above help

Applications / Re: OS/2-eCS Directory Structure
« on: 2008.04.04, 01:35:51 »
Hi

Does anybody knows if there is a documentation (any kind) on how OS/2 and eComStation directory structure should be?

For example.

- All the Programs goes on - x:\Programs\...
- All the DLL goes on - X:\OS2\DLL
- The installed drivers..
- Bitmaps ?
- Graphics ?
- ..etc.

Is there any formal, un-official or suggestion about it ?

I see you have already been given the eFDS link but no-one has warned you of the potential for "dll hell"...

eCS systems have 2 dll directories

\ecs\dll
and
\os2\dll

The config.sys usually has \ecs\dll before \os2\dll in the LibPath (config.sys).

To avoid the occasional unexpected happening with eg libc*.dll files you need to check what is installed in each of those directories and remove duplicate copies of dll files.

Multimedia / Re: USB audio support...
« on: 2008.04.03, 17:34:33 »
I have noticed the config sys statement
DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\USBAUDIO.SYS
I wonder if this setup will work with this item ???:

http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/home_entertainment/computer_gaming/companion_5/index.jsp

Bose Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system
USB simplicity System links to your computer through a single USB
connection. No special software, sound card upgrade, adaptors or
complicated wiring needed.

My email sdttav@suddenlink.net

Hi

Sorry, no idea at all.

Looking at the usbaudio.txt file I see:-

2.4 List of Tested USB-Audio
============================

Labtec LCS-1040 (speaker only)
Altec ADA-70 (speaker only)
TELEX H-531 (microphone only)

2.5 Requirements
================

2.5.1  Hardware
OS/2 USB audio driver is developed to support any USB audio device that follows
USB Audio device specifications.

2.5.2  Software
       (a.) USB Basic support
       (b.) MMPM/2

I would guess that if the Bose product conforms to the above mentioned "USB Audio device specifications" then it should work. However, it may be worth checking that those specs - wherever they are - have not changed during the period of time since the usbaudio driver was released.

If you get on well with the Retailer involved maybe you could purchase with an option to Return if the driver does not work...

Article Discussions / Re: JRE 1.5.0_07 under eComStation
« on: 2008.03.23, 03:05:38 »
Hi All

I had a play with the suggestion to replace the java150_07 files java.exe, javaw.exe, and j2win.dll with those from java142. Seems to work OK with a copy of Phex that requires java1.5 but I have not tried anything else yet; it is certainly better than ar5os2.exe hanging at exit which happens a lot when using that technique to run apps using java1.5

I do seem to have encountered some strange, possibly font related problem, with a game called freesudoku. When I click on the Start button the app should produce a puzzle. It certainly goes through the motions but no numbers are visible. The game "thinks" the numbers are visible because I am not able to select some of the number entry squares. This game works fine with java14x. Any ideas?

Plugins got mentioned.

Simple reason the java150_07 plugins do not work is the lack of plugin "wrapper". With the Innotek Java14x packages the "plugins", npj2*.dll files, copied to the Mozilla Plugins directory are not really plugins - they are "wrappers" for the real plugins, NPJava*.dll files, which you will find in either java142\bin or java142\jre\bin depending on whether you have the JRE or SDK version installed. Check the real plugin file sizes against the "wrapper" file sizes if you doubt this.

No idea if the plugin "wrappers" from java142 can be made to work with java15 plugins...

I suspect that editing all the npj2*.dll files involved and changing anything that looks like this "*$ 1.4.2_09" to "*$ 1.5.0_07" is a starting point. Then I guess java1.5 would need the same "OS/2 Kit for Java" entries in the Registry/Ini files as java142 but with the path pointing to java150_07 location.

Finally, delete existing java142 "plugins" from the Mozilla directory and copy the above modified plugin wrappers - and a final "finally": locate and delete the file pluginreg.dat from either within the Mozilla program directory tree or the directory above wherever the SET MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH= points to.

All the above plugin deleting and copying should be done with the Mozilla product not running.

If I have not missed anything starting a Mozilla browser should let you know if the idea is a "goer"   :-)

Pete

Hardware / Re: NVIDIA Driver 0.0.4 Problem
« on: 2008.03.13, 02:47:14 »
Hi Moby

I have very limited experience of using 2 nics in 1 system; that was with a pair of Intel 100/Pro cards.

To get both to work correctly the driver recognises which nic is which by slot number. The e100beo2.nif has a slot number option; check it in an editor.

Checking the nveth.nif (004) file I do not see a slot number option so wonder if nveth supports more than 1 nic?

Might be worth emailing nickk and asking...

« on: 2008.03.10, 22:27:51 »
Hi BigWarpGuy

Possibly... but I use the win32 codec packages specified for WarpVision and MPlayer respectively and they work fine.

I did ask Vlad (WarpVision developer at the time) about the free codecs package and his response was along the lines of there is nothing in the free codecs package that is needed by WarpVision. I suspect the same may apply to MPlayer...

You can always download, test and report though  :-)

Multimedia / Re: KMP run by icon & Drag-N-Drop
« on: 2008.03.10, 03:05:24 »
Hi Robert

I unchecked Start minimized for the kmp object (K Player) and dropped an mpg clip onto it. When finished the VIO window remained open onscreen with a title of "Completed: K Player" - looks like "Close window on exit" applies only to the playback window.

However, it does not show in any Process/Window list here.

When running I have 2 Process/Window list entries: 1 for the KPlayer window and 1 for K Movie Player which is the playback window spawned by K Player.

Your kmp object is not a cmd script is it? If "Yes" maybe it needs an Exit at the end...

Pete
