Hi

I'm trying to install eCS 2.0 RC7 on a HP Pavilion DV6.. This machine is a laptop with 4GB in RAM and Intel Core 2 Duo.

If I boot from the CD and select "Default Values", the installation goes until

"Unpacking eComStation Installation diskette files to memory disk...
CD-ROM sector read error (drive=00, sectore=2,064, Code=09)."

and freeze right there. If I select "Boot with menu for own values" it freeze in the same part.

Any ideas why Im getting this error or any workarround?  I'm so sure the CD is working ok, I installed eCS on virtual machines without any problems with that CD.

Will it be some incompatibility with the DVD drive (hp CDDVDW TS-L633M ATA Device)?

Any tips will be apreciated.

General Discussion / Several Bounty Suggestions
« on: 2009.11.21, 06:22:17 »
There had been also some other bounty suggestions. Here i list them:

1) Squeak port.

http://www.pharo-project.org
http://www.jvuletich.org/Squeak/SqueakForOS2/SqueakForOS2Eng.html
http://www.squeak.org/

2)GNASH Firefox Plugin
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/

3)Google Chrome browser
http://code.google.com/chromium/

4)Lightscribe system software allows users to burn labels on Lightscribe CDs and DVDs with burners that are made to do so.
http://www.lightscribe.com
(But this one I don't think is open source)

5)Improvement to USBCOM.SYS
The older versions of the Nokia phones supported the virtual modem protocol among others to communicate through the USB port! Nokia seem to have dropped the named protocol out from the new series 40 mobile phones and replaced it with one of their own! For example the Nokia 6700 classic doesn't have the virtual modem protocol any more. The series 60 phones make the USBCOM.SYS driver to crash! Huawei and many other manufacturers use protocols of their own in 3G/4G modems. They need support as well!

What do you think ?

Mike send me the following suggestion for a Bounty and I want to discuss this with the community. So you comments are welcome.

"With the EOL support from IBM also vendors have stopped the development of drivers.
Intel stopped with the 100/1000 MBit network pci controller drivers, also IBM  had some own.

All newer PCI-E based chipsets are not supported. We have GenMAC to make use of windows drivers however there are specific problems with some protocols and GenMAC is not open source, right now nobody is working on it.

It was nice that we had a bounty for the nvidia network driver port, it was a good choice. We got a high quality driver as the driver for linux is not perfectly working for this chipset. The driver supports the nForce family of network chipsets from nForce2 to nForce5.

For Intel wouldn't be the same but one driver can support a family of chipsets.

The driver source you can get from Intel when you select the driver for linux or FreeBSD, e.g.  for the 82572EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller.  These chipsets/network adapters are supported:

        Intel® 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
   Intel® 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Setup & Installation / Problems with PMMERGE and eCS 2.0 RC7
« on: 2009.11.13, 22:18:17 »
Hi

I installed ecs 2.0 rc7 on a hpfs partition from the CD. The machine is a Compaq Presario CQ70 laptop.
Here it is a wiki page I created about that laptop.
http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/HP_Compaq_Presario_CQ70

It installs ok, without any network adapter (No network adapter is selected).
I did an standard installation with the default stuff to install. Didn't add or remove anything from the installation list.  It finished installation process without problems.

It boots fine the first time.  - I close the Post-Installation Task Window.
It boots fine the second time. - I close the feedback wizard.
Third time boots fine. - Switched the volume to 40, since 100% was annoying. - Shows me the I changed the Panorama driver resoluton to 1400xxxx. I also installed GenMAc to make some tests trying to get Atheros

Them it keep booting fine, but in some point of time which I haven't found, when I boot I get the following Message.

SYS0193:PMMERGE can not be run in a OS/2 Session.

SYS1919: The file PMMERGE specified in the RUN statement
on line 204 of the CONFIG.SYS file does not contain a valid program.
 Line 204 is ignored
 Press Enter to Continue...

When it reach to PMSHELL. It shows this message, beeps and freeze.

The file PMMERGE specified in the PROTSHELL statement on
line 130 of the CONFIG.SYS file does not contain a valid program.
 Line 130 is ignores
The system is stopped. Correct the preciding error and
 restart the system.

I can not found where is the problem. Since I had also tested removing Uniaud, ACPI, Genmac. But I can not which driver is causing eCS to hang. Or what is the problem.

So there are two thing I need to find:

1) What is causing the problem.
2) Find out how to fix an installation that had this error, since the only way I had found to fix it is to reinstall it again, which after some time it breaks again with this error.

Any hint is welcome.

Thanks.

Article Discussions / lSwitcher version 2.71 beta 0
« on: 2009.11.03, 04:30:03 »
http://www.os2world.com/content/view/19402/2/

This files cames with the following readme. I really like LSwitcher, I'm a user of it. basically because it is a nice Alt-tab tool. The good thing is that it is open source.

lSwitcher for OS/2, Version 2.71 beta 0
********************************

Copyright (C) 1997-2009  Andrei Los

This is most likely the last release of lSwitcher. It looks like I will not have any
more spare time to continue its development. I am also not sure there are enough users
to appreciate the beauty of OS/2, and I am not sure there is a need in this program
anymore. I feel, however, that I need to make the latest binaries and source code
public as there are some useful features compared to V 2.70, and this was quite an
effort at the time to implement these features. The active development stopped a
couple of years, and I think the program was quite stable. There was no public testing
though, so I call this release a beta. Also, I am not sure the widget is compatible
with the latest XWorkplace, but you can give it a try! There is no new documentation
but I hope the readme file from the earlier version will be sufficient to get started.
Good luck to all you OS/2 users out there!

Andrei

Hardware / Supported eCS-OS2 Hardware Wiki
« on: 2009.10.13, 23:51:34 »
Hi.

I had been playing arround for some week about creating a Wiki with reports of hardware running on ecs-OS2. The idea will be to bring the community and space and a easy way to create their own hardware reviews, telling what it works, what it don't ?

The basic idea of the Wiki will be:
1) To have list of working hardware
    ex: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Digitizer_Tablets
2) To have a list and track down the drivers
    ex: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Digitizer_Tablets_Device_Drivers
3) To have the ability to have a page created for each device to include more comments
     ex: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/IBM_Thinkpad_G40

4) And as always, try to promote open collaboration, open source drivers, etc.

The site still a draft and I'm discussing with several people about this. I still need to connect the gallery images to the wiki. I really don't know if it worthy to keep going on.

What do you think about the idea ?

Anybody that want to join me on creating/improving this Wiki ?

Martin

Hi

I was wondering something I can not find on eComStation 2.0 RCx.

On XWorkplace there was the possibility to add a "Module" tab on the properties of a file. That helps me a lot on the .sys files to see the release version. (see attached picture to understand what Im talking about).

But I can not found how to do the same on eCS.

Anybody can give me a pointer ?

Thanks.

Hi. I had curiosity about this, since I had never got my hands on an ATM OS/2 machine.

Which software does it run ? are drivers for the diferent components (Card reader, touchscreen) available? Can it be uploaded to hobbes ?

Which is the name of the software used to show the screens to the customer?

I will apreciate if anybody with experience can take the time to explain me this a little bit more.
