Article Discussions / easyPaint v0.0.1
2012.03.27, 04:59:51

Just a funny thing, there is another EasyPain 0.6.0 (2011/04) that was ported to OS2-eCS.

Both seems very similar, but have some differences. Here are some screenshots.

This March . .. .

Happy birthday.

This year I'm (almost) sure we will be updating the OS2World server and the scripts ;)

Thanks to everyone that had been part of this community during this 12 years.

Hi

I decided to start again the fight to try to get higher resolution on eCS 2.1 guest on a VirtualBox VM.

  • Host: Win 7 x64
  • Guest: eComStation 2.1 SMP (with SNAP installed)
  • VirtualBox: 4.1.10

My goal is to obtain a 1366x768 resolution on the eCS 2.1 VM.

I had tried from the Vbox command (from the host machine):
VBoxManage setextradata "<name of the VM>" CustomVideo1 "1366x768x32"

And later I started playing arround with GAMODE on the eCS 2.1 guest and the displays configuration, but I can not get a 1366x768.
I tried:
gamode add 1366 768 32
and I get:
Failed to add mode 1366 x 768 x 32!

Does anybody has more experience playing with SNAP gamode? Do you think I can get a 1366x768 resolution with the current SNAP driver?

Thanks.

Reference from slashdot.org

An anonymous reader writes "AMD has publicly released the open-source code to the Radeon HD 7000 series 'Southern Islands' graphics cards for Linux users. This allows users of AMD's latest-generation of Radeon graphics cards to use the open-source Linux driver rather than Catalyst, plus there's also early support for AMD's next-generation Fusion APUs."

Also

"This code drop comes just one day after Intel began publishing its Haswell graphics code."

Mensys . .. .

I had been testing ACPI 3.19.15 on a Lenovo L420. In general terms it seems stable and didn't give any boot problem or strange message.
The only two things:

  • - I rushed to make a install it with the WPI installer before reading the readme. The baterry widget stopped working. So after reading the readme I disable all the stuff on the config sys and reinstalled it. The widget started to work.
  • - The "ACPI Power" icon made on the desktop folder by the installer is not pointing to the right path /ecs/bin, but that is a simple error on the WarpIn script.

I still need to test further the standby/resume function. It only worked one time. With  Fn+F4 it standby the machine, but the resume didn't worked, it shut down the computer. But I still need to try the "/VBE" switch.

Hardware / Trying out Lenovo Thinkpad L420
2012.02.03, 23:06:48
I got a Lenovo Thinkpad L420 at my office and I had installed it eComStation 2.1.

Machine: Lenovo L420 - 7856-3WS
i5-2410M(2.30GHz), 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm, HD 14in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless WWAN, Option Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera 6c, Li-Ion

Processor: i5-2410M(2.30GHz)
Seems to run fin. ACPI /SMP recognize 4 proc.

Audio :Intel Cougar Point PCH - High Definition Audio Controller
Recognized as Intel ID 2805. It still don't sound. I need to keep tweaking UniAud.

Video: Intel Sandy Bridge-MB GT2 - Integrated Graphics Controller
Panorama includes on eComStation + the Intel widescreen activator seems good enough to run at 1366x768

Wireless: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 AGN 2x2 HMC
It seems that we don't have drivers to make this one work. Any help/comments will be appreciated.

Network Card: RealTek Semiconductor RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Etherner seems to run ok with the realktek driver that cames on eCS 2.1

Extra Buttons: On Screen
OnScreen tool seems to work with the volume up, down buttons and the thinkvantage button.

Mouse: Trackpoint / Ultranav
I can not make it work. I'm using a external USB mose. Any hint will be apreciated.
I had switched back to IBM Single Mouse Driver to make the USB mouse works. Amouse seems to break the mouse, the mouse moves but it don't click.

Tricks to run eCS 2.1 installation
- Enable Moden Hardware ACPI
- Enable AHCI.

I have it on dual boot with Windows 7 with Windows boot loader.

Any hints with the trackpoint and wireless card will be apreciated.

Thanks

This wasn't happening with OS/2 ATMs, time ago the machines used to the deliver the rodents alive.

Some day I was having a quick discussion with Kim about which will be a good idea to attract more users to this community.

And one of the issued discussed was the price of eComStation was a block for people that may want to try to use this OS, or ex-OS/2 users that want to give it a try to make a come back. It does not mean that eCS it is not worthy of the current price, but it is stopper for someone that want to give it try and use some software under this OS.

Even that nothing it is guarantee on this life, one of the ideas to try to attract more curious users and more developers will be to for Mensys to release a free of charge eComStation virtual machine instead of a free boot CDROM.

What features should this eCS VM should have:

  • Good VM integration with host machine. Ex: Improve the VirtualBox Mouse/Shared folder drivers for eCS
  • Developer tools: Possible to have a GCC ready to use environment will help getting people to develop
  • OpenJDK, Qt4, Odin installed by default
  • Include Open Source apps that may be interesting
  • A lack of respect for the legacy: yes.. break the legacy, maybe it is time to remove things instead of keeping old stuff, no netscape, no java 1.1, no faxworks, no webexplorer, plus this will be "as is" for personal use.

But Mensys has a business selling eCS licenses, so this free of charge VM will need to have some rules or limitations:

  • "As Is". Do no expect formal support or custom bugfix for this version.
  • Only to run on a Virtual Machine, no real hardware allowed
  • For personal use only, no corporate or business use allowed.
But don't waist resources trying to block by software this limitations, this should a user license limitation.

Like always, this is only a draft suggestion. I have no idea if Mensys is able (legally, not technically) to do this.

Any comments on the idea?

Adrian Gs. .. .

I want to quote Adrian's last message:

"One last remark: While we build a lot of stuff around open source software I get the impression that in some cases changes in the code (aka patches) do not get distributed with released binaries. This is not really smart, open source software is about sharing code and at least for GPL based software it is mandatory to release modified code. But even if you are using BSD or Apache licensed code we should share our code. The OS/2 community is definitely too small to waste time on searching recent patches for compiling it on our platform. So if you keep some stuff for you, please release it with the binaries!"

Currently I think he as a point here. We are having this issue with open source software on this community and not only patches for netlabs open source projects:

1) We have open source porters, that do not release their source code when they port something to OS/2. If it is GNU GPL software they need to release the source code, no matter if they only change a little bit of it to make it run under OS/2.

2) There are other open source projects, that release the source code (because they are forced by the GNU GPL), but they want to hide the binaries. While this is be legal, it is a waist of time. There is no point on hiding the binaries, because someone else can compile it and as Adrian says it is a waist of time for a community that lacks resources.

The ED. .. .

I had included several links to the EDM2 site. Please if anybody knows any OS/2-eCS development related article that can be linked from EDM/2 wiki please let me know to include it.

Any help is welcome.

Hi

Since the end of 2010 eComStation users started putting on their wishlist that the eCS GUI require more love (improvements).

At the middle of this year I started to create this petition to Mensys/Serenity System to improve the eCS GUI (My Christmas UX Wishlist). I'm to turn it public before sending it to know the community comments and if there is anything else you want to add or improve on this petition.

I had made a quick graphical comparison between Mac OS, Windows, Linux and eCS 2.1 GUI and put some recommendations to improve the eCS User Experience.
In this subject the opinions may differ from one user to other, so I don't expect that everybody share my ideas, but I will like to hear about the different options that you have in mind.

Here it is the link to the document in ODF format (6MB)

Reading this article - Windows Store isn't what you think - the author says:

Successful platforms share five common traits:

1. There are good development tools and APIs for easily making good applications.
2. There is at least one killer application people really want.
3. There is breadth of useful applications.
4. Third parties make lots of money.
5. There is a robust ecosystem.

Just checking this news at OSNews.com.

B&N filed a "Prior Art" document (PDF) to court, which means that a lot of MS patents are not original and are based in other work.

Guess which OS is listed there? ;)

We all know the answer to that question.

...but it got ratified with the first answer of this IBM Video.

For some time I had been collecting OS/2 boxes pictures on the OS2World.com Gallery.

If anybody have around an OS/2 box and want to take some pictures of it to include it on the gallery, please contact me.
If anybody also have the box in different languages... greek, korean, japanese, thai... etc..etc.. it will be excelent !!

Just send the pictures to me (martin @ os2world.com) or upload them anywhere (mediafire, megaupload) and let me know the download link.

Here it is an example of the gallery.

Sure that for the general tech market the OS/2 .inf help format is complete irrelevant. But how relevant is this format for the OS/2-eCS community?
Compared to PDF, what are the advantage and disadvantage of the .inf format ?
What about the .hlp files?

From my side I'm leaning more to the idea that PDF and Lucide can replace the .inf and Newview/view without losing much.

I want to hear the comments of something like "Information Presentation Facility" vs "PDF"

What do you think?
