Open Bounties / Re: OS/2 native port of Java 6
« on: 2008.01.03, 19:36:53 »

Ohh. I almost forgot.

There is also the Java Source Code available, but it is under a restrictive license (JRL license) that limit the use of it.

- Java™ Platform, Standard Edition 6u10 Binary Snapshot Releases - http://download.java.net/jdk6/

But I'm not sure about the license issues trying to port this code.

Hi Highlander

I agree with you that porting Java 6 to OS/2 is important. And I think many people agreed on that because is one of the highest bounties collected on the system.

About the other projects. Since Sun open sourced just the Java components that they can as GNU GPL, there are another projects that are trying to build Java JRE/JDK replacing the components that Sun was unable to open source.

Since the goal of the bounty will be to have Java 6  applications running under OS/2-eCS, the following projects (that are open source) can also be considered for this bounty.

- OpenJDK - http://openjdk.java.net/
(OpenJDK is the effort by Sun Microsystems to release a fully buildable Java Development Kit based completely on free and open source code.)

- GNU Classpath - http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath
(GNU Classpath, Essential Libraries for Java, is a GNU project to create free core class libraries for use with virtual machines and compilers for the java programming language.)

- IceTea - http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/Main_Page
(The IcedTea project provides a harness to build the source code from http://openjdk.java.net using Free Software build tools and provides replacements for the binary plugs with code from the GNU Classpath project.)

Plus the word "Java" as a programming language belongs to Sun. So it can only be ported as "Java for OS/2" if  royalties are paid to Sun to use the name.

I'm not a Developer, but I think this three open source projects can help on having a Java (or Java like) JRE for OS/2-eCS.

Any comments are welcome.

Open Bounties / Re: GTK+ 2.x (The GIMP Toolkit) port bounty
« on: 2008.01.01, 16:37:10 »
Hi

Do you know any other programs, beside GIMP, Abiword, Dia, Glade, GnuCash and Gnumeric. that runs using GTK+ ?

Regards

Possible we should be talking about Moonlight. It uses three open source licenses. But nobody know if in the future Silverlight will have feature that Moonlight will not.

But I don't think that a Moonlight port will be that important for the moment. We will have to see if the technology get broadly adopted.

Thanks for your point of view Mikael.

I don't think that Serenity will have problems with IBM by replacing some OS/2 closed components. Currently Serenity included already some open source replacement on eComStation. The basic problem is that we don't have the replacements available ;)

I share your point of view that we have to support Serenity on the upcomming 2008. But in a long term the open source replacements are very important, since having it open source will provide us vendor independance.

Hi

I will like to open the discussion on which should be our Community Goals for 2008.

For example:
From the Development point of view:
- Support Voyager Development
- Support Open Source Replacement for closed OS/2-eCS components.
- Support porting Open Source Software to OS/2-eCS.

From the User point of view:
- Encourage the use of eComStation 2.0.
- ???

What else do you have in mind ?  Which level of detail should have our Goals for 2008 ??

While IBM officially discontinued support of its long-suffering OS/2 operating systems in December 2006 (I know that to many, it seems like it's been years), there are still those zealots out there who keep trying to open its crypt.

Games / Top 10 free Linux 3D games
« on: 2007.12.12, 03:46:02 »

I liked this article I founs on OSNews.

http://gamesuy.blogspot.com/2007/12/top-10-free-linux-3d-games.html

There are nice 3D games and some are open source. It will be nice to have some ported to OS/2-eCS, but possible we will have some issues on the 3D part with the video drivers. But it is fun to read.

Hi Mike

I just updated my Master for the Empire game page. Seems that I missed to update it on it's time.

On your site there is a dead link on this page.
The first file link do not work (http://roemerheim.dyns.net/p/files/gfdappga.me/files.htm).

Thanks

Hi

Mine isn't an individual list, but I will really like to thank all OS/2 Developers that are involved in open source projects. Their dedication to their projects had made a difference for the OS/2 Community.

My dream is to have someday a complete open source OS/2, not only to have the source code available to the public, but to completely have vendor independence and ensure the future of the platform. I even listed on my wiki a list of Open Source OS/2 projects hoping that possible someday can be made an open source distribution of OS/2.

General Discussion / Too many bounty suggestions...
« on: 2007.10.30, 04:34:14 »
There had been the following Bounty suggestions.

Please post any comments about them:

-------------------------
MediaCoder is a free universal batch media transcoder, which nicely integrates most popular audio/video codecs and tools into an all-in-one solution. With a flexible and extendable architecture, new codecs and tools are added in constantly as well as supports for new devices. MediaCoder intends to be the swiss army knife for media transcoding in all time and at this moment, it already has millions of users from 170+ countries all over the planet.

--------------------------
HyperEngine-AV, Arboretum Systems' award winning video editing software is now free, complete with full source code. Users can capture, arrange, edit and process video, audio and text in a free-form, trackless document, to create movies and slide shows

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hyperengine

--------------------------
Xara Xtreme for Linux is a powerful, general purpose graphics program for Unix platforms including Linux, FreeBSD and (in development) OS-X.

Formely known as Xara LX, it is based on Xara Xtreme for Windows, which is the fastest graphics program available, period. The Xara Xtreme source code was made available open-source in early 2006, and is being ported to Linux.

--------------------------
InfraRecorder is a free CD/DVD burning solution for Microsoft Windows. It offers a wide range of powerful features; all through an easy to use application interface and Windows Explorer integration.

http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

--------------------------
cdrtfe is a win32 frontend for the cdrtools (cdrecord, mkisofs, readcd, cdda2wav), Mode2CDMaker and VCDImager. It can burn data discs (CD and DVD), Audio CDs, XCDs, (S)VCDs and DVD-Video discs. For Windows 9x, ME, 2k, XP.

--------------------------
VLC player. The program is a cross platform multimedia player that should be easy to port. It is already portet to Windows, Mac OS, BeOS, and several versions of Linux.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc

--------------------------
The Mono project is the opensource implementation of the Microsoft .Net platform (the "Counter-Java"), which is very important and powerful development framework for web and desktop applications - becoming the MS platform of the future.

With the opensource Mono project this technology is available on many "non-MS" systems, and I think it should be available on OS/2 too, because future Windows applications require this, the "mono/2" runtime would be the new environment for them - playing a role similar to ODIN!

http://mono-project.com

--------------------------
Moonlight is the opensource implementation of MS Silverlight (the "Counter-Flash"), the new multimedia and scripting platform for client-side web applications. It is a new browser-plugin similar to Adobe/Macromedia Flash or Java.
The MS Silverlight uses .Net, the opensource version (called Moonlight) uses Mono.

It will be also useful to port it "quickly" to OS/2 -eCS.
