Hi friends, i have some questions about the eComstations software.

1º) It's runs well on new laptops with dual core??   ie:  Dell Latitude D620
2º) All software that runs on OS/2 WARP 4.0, also runs ok on eComstation??
3º) And the last one, what eComstation version  have i to buy???  Because i see a lot of versions but my knowledge about this is very limited...   ???
4º) One more--> Could runs windows Xp and eComstation on the same laptop??

Thank you all for your attention

Pete

Hi Mc_kein

1] Sorry, cannot answer this - never tried much on a laptop myself  :-)

You could have a check here for info on hardware http://en.ecomstation.ru/hardware.php - I spotted D600 and D610 mentioned.

2] Almost all software that runs on Warp4 runs on eCS; I say almost because I have actually found 1 small app, MultiDesk, that worked fine with Warp4 and eCS1.0/1.1 but does not work fine with later versions, the mouse is not available on newly created Desktops. The problem is due to changes in the mouse driver I understand. Note this is the only app I have found a problem with.

3] The current version is eCS1.2R

eCS2.0 is in the later stages of testing, currently at RC5 (RC = Release Candidate) with an RC6 due before eCS2.0 GA ("finished" version) is released

To be able to download eCS2.0RC5/6 - and various drivers software available specific to eCS2.0 - you would need to purchase 1 eCS1.2R plus 1 Software Subscription. The Software Subscription gives you access to the eCS2.0 builds and the final release plus other bits and bobs such as ACPI updates.

*Before * dashing off and spending your life savings purchasing eCS1.2R plus the Subscription it is worth noting that it is possible to purchase an upgrade to eCS1.2R from versions of Warp3 and 4 (as well as earlier versions of eCS). If you do not have a copy of any of those packages simply hang out on ebay and wait for a copy to appear. It may take a few weeks but saves a few pennies  :-)

4] In theory that should be possible but not being a laptop person and not having a copy of XP I guess someone else ought to jump in here. All I can say is that it was not any great problem to install Windows2000 and eCS to the same disk in a Desktop system.

Hope the above is of some help.

Hi Mc_kein,

I cannot tell. That depends on ACPI, screen format (16:9, i.e. "wide"?) and the video driver(s). In general, sound and networking (especially WiFi) chipsets used need to be clarified upfront, thus, checking with ecomstation.ru (as suggested per above post and URL) is recommended. :)

Supposedly... yes. As always, it depends on the specific requirements of the software. I can't tell if there are any backwards-compatibility problems with some DLLs...

Good point. AFAIK, you can still download a free demo CD of eCS 1.2 ...(R?) at
http://www.ecomstation.com/democd/
...but this is NOT a current version! It lacks a lot of the newer (and in your case required) drivers like  GenMac, Panorama, Uniaud (updated) etc. It's really a shame there is no 2.0RCx demo cd... So, to tell a long story short: I can't say. The latest would be best (2.0RC5 via update+subscription) but if that does not work out for you, I don't know if you can simply return it and get your money back...?

Quote4º) One more--> Could runs windows Xp and eComstation on the same laptop??
That should be no problem as far as dual-boot, multi-OS and/or partitioning is concerned.
Sometimes, with ACPI however, there could be implications by cold and or warm reboot shifting from one OS to the other (devices not initialized/terminated properly) ...but I think that was sorted out pretty much.

Best would be to find a local dealer and ask regarding "what if the stuff doesn't work...".
Or hope for someone having the same make and model of laptop answering here.

Oh, BTW, you might perhaps go there too: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/os2hardware/
Chances are someone has already posted something (use search function) and if not... well, join, ask! :)

Hope this helps, regards,
Thomas
