[a hre. .. .

I've installed SL two times to check out and the first time was over 1.5 year ago and last time was couple of month ago. I'm still puzzled where all the people are, I mean they claim that SL has 3 or 5 millions registered users, but where are everybody? It's like walking around in a dead city (seen the movie 28 Days Later?)...

So even it seems like there are some designer that are able to create items and sell them in SL and even if some people talk about SL as the future GUI to interact and surf the internet. I'm really curious to hear if I'm the only one that still hasn't understood the full purpose with SL, or?

And open source or not, do we need to care? Yes, I know - why even bother posting this... but I just have to get it, or not!

I had tried, and I almost understand it. I still have problems interacting with the stuff arround. To find people the way that I know is looking at the map and teleporting where other are located (the green spots).
well... possible I'm too old, I still don't understand it completely, or how people is making money on it. well, I guess that little by little I will understand it.

They way currently people are making money is to create and build items that is then sold inside SL and the omney isself, Linden Dollar, if I don't recall wrong can be exchanged and withdrawn as USD. I can understand that you have to build the stuff yourself since SL doesn't provide you with anything really cool stuff; but what I don't understand why grown up people would be willing to pay 5-25 USD for virtual stuff that will go away in the next server crasch at Lindens or fade away in the virtual future.

Oh, and how do Linden Labs make money? Well, there is the monthly fee if you want to be a serious player - eh what are they playing actually? Next if you want to build a house you need to buy land and to own land you need to be a fee based player, ie pay the monthly fee. And when you have bought the land you have to pay a monthly tax based on how much land you own. Since SL don't have any cool skins or textures available you can then upload images via the SL client and this of course, costs money. And to make the most fun out of the objects that you create you need to glue it all together with scripts to make the stuff "work"".

But, then again, I've read couple of interviews where people see the SL as the future GUI to interact over the internet. So I guess that we might need a port for OS2 :-)
