Since I retired, I need to make more space in my office by getting rid of a computer desk. I want to network my OS/2 system and my xp system and put the 2 boxes next to each other under 1 desk. What hardware and software do I need and how do I do it? Also, how do I operate it once all the connections are done?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Dennis,

Myself and others wrote some instructions in the forums on how to do this... sadly, the Search feature isnt working for me, so I cannot find them. If someone else cant dig them up for you, you may wish to do a little digging to find them yourself.

But, if memory serves, you have basically one of these 3 options:

(1) Install the XP NetBIOS plugin from the XP CD (you must copy it into the windows install before installing it - the installer is "broken") and change the LMANNOUNCE flag in the registry

(2) enable NetBIOS over TCPIP on Warp, and on XP (File and Print Sharing), change the LMANNOUNCE flag in the registry

(3) Install Samba on the Warp machine

#1 will get you intermittent (at best) printer sharing if the printer is hooked up to the Warp machine - for some reason, even with XP's NetBIOS over TCPIP *NOT* installed, XP will (almost always) insist on trying to talk to the printer via that method - which of course wont work.

#1 also seems to do some other weird things, like XP will try to talk to the Warp machine and others looking for a NETBIOS (via TCPIP) domain controller - again even though it should not.

#3 may be the best option, though #2 should work for the most part.

#3 will ensure later compatibility with Vista or other operating systems

Note, there is more to the instructions than my simple summary above. If I can manage to find my posts and everyone else's on the subject, I will post the links.

Best,
Robert

Thanks, Robert. What is Samba and where do I find it? Do I have to do anything with the XP machine if I install Samba on the Warp--soon to be ECS, I hope--machine?

I already have an ethernet router. Will that help? Can I network the 2 systems with just the router and an ethernet card in each?

Samba is the replacement for OS/2's "Peer networking" and other similar networking stuff.

Dennis, the physical connecting of your machines is simple. Since you have a router and cards in each machine just connect machine to the router then the router to whatever you use to connect to the world.

If you have netbios installed, and bound to the NIC, on each machine they should be able to see each other.  This is how I 'see' clients machines on my all OS/2 network.

You can find the MS netbios, called netbeui, on the XP CD in valueadd\msft\net\netbeui

Found it!

NOTE THE CAVEAT: SHARING A PRINTER HOOKED TO THE OS/2 MACHINE MAY NOT WORK. Windows keeps trying to send various parts of the info via TCPBEUI. That may be some weird bug in the printer drivers for my printer (maybe?), but I doubt it.

For NETBIOS over TCP/IP running on both machines (Windows default for "File and Printer Sharing") I believe (other than using matching "workgroup" names, you simply need to change the LMANNOUNCE flag in the Windows registry (as outlined in the earlier post/thread).
