RC6a - How can I make it use SMP kernel for install

Is there a way I can do a RC6a install from the CD that will load the SMP kernel rather than theW4 IBM 14.104a kernel? On one particular machine I can install RC5 (which installs the SMP kernel) without problems, but RC6a craps out with a Kernel crash in the last phase of the install. Before I decide to make a feedback report reguarding this problem I would like to have more information to pass on about the problem, plus I really am not convinced its a problem with RC6a and suspect the mobo might have problems.

Thanks for any feedback

Hi klipp,

not sure... but I think if I remember correctly, the RC6a boot menu ("boot from menu with own values") has an option to force install the SMP kernel (even if the machine appears to not have SMP).
I can't check it, since I don't have an install CD/image at hand right now.

On a side-note... I thought that the SMP kernel is default since 2.0RC3... did that change some time back or am I wrong on this?

Cheers,
Thomas

I had the same issue a while ago and filed in a bug report. Conclusion was, SMP kernel will be used even for installation in future versions. Too bad I can't find it anymore... Maybe at evening.
