Due that we want to build up this abondonware archive I guess that we also should recommend and host proper  utilities to be used to make whole images of diskettes and cd's before uploading. Keeping the original media structure is also needed for some of the older software that sometimes have hard coded the directory structure, etc.

So what utilities would be suggestion to be used and and as well we might think about recommendation for multiply operating systems here as well.

Hi All,

GR8 news this is now up n running.

1st, to create ISO images under Win$ - Nero will do just fine or try ImageBurn - it works really well, do a google search. Both products may also be used to burn the images to CD.
2nd, to zip your ISO images under Win$ - I've found 7Zip for creating archives really good for both speed and compression. Again, use google.
3rd, NcFTP for both uploading and downloading from FTP sites.

Now the appropriate software for our Beloved OS - OS/2 eCS.
1st, for creation and burning of ISO images use either of the following : Cdrtools/2 2.01.01a04 (Please note that it's not compatible with the following program) and Audio/Data-CD-Creator 0.56. Also please note the other prerequisites in the readme's of both programs. Both can be found at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/
2nd, to unzip 7Zip archive use the OS/2 version found here :  ftp://weird.da.ru/moveton/p7zip-4.44-bin-os2-ilibc61.zip
3rd, again NcFTP to be used for uploading and downloading from FTP sites and can be found here :  http://download.smedley.info/ncftp-3.2.1-os2.zip
Thanks Paul for your brilliant work :-)

Unfortunately my aging OS/2 machine died on me and I will now have to try source a second hand power supply for my P1.

Hope this helps, realize I'm not very concise nor meticulous but sure you all know your way around.

Looking forward to uploading my first Image of Hopkins FBI... better get started.

Cheers,

John.

The preferred format i use is to use raw diskette images (.dsk), and raw cd-rom images (.iso).

Here's some things i use.

Floppy disk

Anything that can read diskette images of some kind will read and write raw images.  I'd rather use this format than some kind of zipped or partial image.  Some emulators have problems with particular extentions, so you might have to pick and choose here.  .IMA, .IMG, .DSK, .FLP, and .VFD are all used for images, the first two are also used for graphic images too.

1.  extract.exe (www.winimage.com)  This extracts and injects files from DOS.  version 2.00 seems to be better under OS/2, the latest version is 2.1, but OS/2 gets confused with the WinNT segment.  You could probably configure this as an archiver under some file managers (there's one for totalcommander/win), to read/write to the data segment.

2.  dskimage.exe:  i don't know where i found this, but it's a DOS proggie, that works under OS/2 and Windows NT.  [i've seen an OS/2 proggie 'image.exe' that works like DR-DOS diskcopy: ie copy to/from image file + DOS style copy.  Prehaps it could be a feature of the new OS/2.

3.  makedskf i think does full images.

4.  There's a DOS proggie hight 'os2hdd' that extracts a diskette image into a directory based on the diskette label.  (eg Diskette with label DISK_0 directory \disk_0 in the target). Its primary use is to copy OS/2 diskette images to a layout for install.

5.  Winnt proggie vfd mounts floppy images to diskette for the OS to hack.

CD-ROMS

I use .ISO files here, since many proggies work with these.  Some will even let you edit or mount the iso direct.  Some disks have funny formats, so we might need things like BIN/CUE etc here.  I'm no expert here.

1.  readcd (from cdrecord) does a good job of imaging cdroms and dvds.  I use this under Windows mainly, but OS/2 ought work too.

2.  proggies exist to allow mounting + editing of iso files.  Ultraiso and WinIso can both edit the ISO file, without destroying any boot structure.  For making ISO files directly, i use a batch file + rexx scripts + mkisofs.exe to index + produce iso files.  At the moment, i am using the russian version of mkisofs, which supports the --duplicatesonce switch.

3.  for compression / expansion, i use proggies with cross-platform support, such as RAR, ACE or ZIP.  I use fc2 / fcw as a shell for these, so that it's easier to pull files out of an archive.

Kim, the best way to make diskette images is to use Daniel F Valot's disk tools http://dvalot.free.fr/emtcopy.htm available for OS/2 and Win.

ISO images are best made with MKISOFS2 (the one by nikk) and either the command line or scripts.  In fact I have a setup here that I have been using to transfer a lot of my floppies to CD.

For those that are stuck in the windows world then, as far as I can see, PowerISO would be the best way of constructing an ISO image or adding to one.  This is from what I've seen on clients machines - also its not free.

Hi, the far way best tool for CD ISO images is "DVD Toys" as it give you the freedom to extract data from a CD/DVD and create ISO images and burn them to new media.

It rely on mkisofs but with DVD Toys one doesn't have to type things on the keyboard  (the Linux commandline way).
