Trouble getting genmac to work with intel 2915 wlan

Gracious contributors, I'm making progress on making my T43 serve all my computing needs. I was able to get genmac to work on the intel 2200 on my soon to be gone Dell Lat. D810, with either OS/2 or eCS. I've transferred those same drives over to the T43. I initially despaired when I saw that it used a 2915, but DougB said it was on the list, I used Warpin, it correctly identified the vendor and ID and completed the install. I looked at the list, and indeed the 2915 is supported.

When I reboot, both OSes complain "no valid hardware found for WRND32$" (flashing) When I run scan or scanloop, they don't see the card. I don't see it in the hardware manager either. The card worked under XP (original hard drive). I will attempt to reinstall eCS.

I only have 1 day to work on it before I leave for a month. If it is obvious what I'm missing or have done wrong, can sombody point it out to me? Do I need to remove the 2200 files?

DougB, I'm using v2.20, I downloaded the unsupported file you pointed me to. I read the info file you wrote. When I check the appropriate box and push the 'I Agree' button, nothing happens. Minor issue, but  I've missed something,
As always, thanks. Steve

If I understand correctly, you simply copied an existing eCS installation from the DELL system. That is never going to work right until you tweak all of the (hundreds of?) places that need to be tweaked. One of those would be that you need to replace the 2200 support, using the Adapters and protocols program (MPTS.EXE), with the 2915 support. Chances are that you also need to replace the wired NIC support as well. The GENMAC installer does not do that, all it does is install the required files to support the device. It won't matter if you remove the 2200 files, or not, as long as you don't exceed the limit on the number of files that can be in \IBMCOM\MACS (127???).

Did you select a package to install, before clicking 'I agree'? You need to double click the one that you want, and it should color the box next to it.

Doug you are correct, I just pulled the hard drive out and put it in the Thinkpad. Most stuff worked, somethings worked that I had not been able to make work, but I lost my wifi. I don't mind doing a fresh install of eCS, because I have just been evaluating.
I forgot about mpts. So I will consider this as a solution path.

Re: unsupported files, I'll try again. probably a non-issue now, but I would still like to see what it does. Back with more issues of a success report  after a month. Thanks, Doug. Steve

Ah, Success! I needed to go into mptn and reconfigure. It would never have occurred to me,
And, Doug, yes, I needed to double click. I right clicked, left clicked, shaded/unshaded, but never double clicked.

I really like this T43. I hope that withing a few days of my return I will be able to put the Dell on Craigslist and retire the Toshiba.
And get on with life and use my computer as life tool not a past time.
And not have to follow Bill Gates business model Or worry about the next piece of malevolent code.  Peace to all that live an examined life! Steve

DougB,

Has the Atheros AR5007 driver in your package been updated since the Team OS/2 version was released to support the Asus netbooks?

I ask as both my Asus and Acer netbooks eventually had the mini pci card changed out to use the Broadcom BCM4311. Another unsupported mode driver I created and could add to your package. The problem with all the BCM43xx family in general is that XWLAN can't seem to pass the SSID properly and I have to make the profile for the sake of using the wep entry then manually issue the ssid command to get to get XWLAN to start dhcp and finally connect.

It is still better than the experience I was having with the Atheros cards in both devices, It would connect but IP would stop functioning after about 30secs. Sigurd and me had many a post on this subject and I never found an answer to the problem. I would love to put back the Atheros cards if I can confirm this is now working.

Thanks!

Sigurd

Hi,

yes, these drivers have been updated meanwhile. Ed reported that the drop out problemdoes not exist anymore.

I also had problems with the Atheros card on my Acer One. A later driver made the dropouts less frequent but yet disturbing. Later I saw that a solution was reached. At that time I had exchanged the card to an intel 3945 "I knew" should work, but it didn't in the first end. But using the settings from a XP-reg dump made it work perfect.

It seems like the settings in the inf or reg-file - the HKR_  settings are important. Could it be an idea to gather which changes in those values that use to be important, so a user would know what values to experiment with? I guess that not all values are that important. I've documentet the values I had to change on a the intel 3945 abg (Acer One)  and on an intel 2200 (T43).

Or is this "already known"?

I am not sure. My package contains whatever someone told me that they got to work.

It seems that it is necessary to have a REG export for the specific machine that you are trying to make work, to get the best results. How portable those exports might be is somewhat questionable. It is also not well known what the various settings might do (one can guess, and if the install *.INF is available, that may give some indication about what settings are for). This does become a problem for those who do not have windows installed. It may also depend on which version of the driver is used. WinXP drivers seem to be preferred, but Win2000, and WinVISTA drivers, and exports, are known to work (sometimes). I haven't heard of any results with trying Win7 drivers and exports.

I cannot test everything (anything), so I depend on people telling me what works, and supplying me with the appropriate files so I can package them in GENMU. I have packaged a couple of experimental ones in the GENMU_TEST package, so that people can test them, and report back to me. Currently, there is one device in there that has not been tested (and one that is good). If anybody has a RALINK [1814:2790] to test with, I would like to hear the results.

I will suggest, that it may be to the OS/2 communities advantage, if everybody would try to get whatever NIC they have, to work with GENMAC (unless they are already supported). The more that we can get to work, the better chance we will have to get something new working later. It is obvious that GENMAC is a dead end street, but since we have nothing to replace it, yet, we do need to try to get more devices to work.

BTW, I am told that the devices that are currently in GENMU will be included in eCS 2.0 GA.

The idea from my side was to gather which values that differ from the original genmac (reg or inf-file) to an XP generated one, to see what values are interesting. Attaching this *.ods so you can see how I mean. People could check what values changed for them and we may in the end have some statistical numbers on what values are central. But if that's already known, there is of course no gain with it.

To compare values I simply used a file comparing tool.
