I don't use templates and don't like their clutter. I usually use Unimaint to remove them from OS/2. I get a warning message I have not seen before when I try to remove the templates from eCS using Unimaint from another drive and fear disaster and discontinue uninstall. Any words of wisdom? Steve

Open the properties of the template you want to remove. Go to the icon tab. Uncheck the Template checkbox. Now the template is an ordinary object and you can delete it.

Hmmm... removing them seems more harm than good. I simply move the template folders deep into someplace in the OS/2 System folder. Then never look at them again unless I want to set up a new object type.

I find them indispensable when it comes to assigning properties to specific object types (images, video files, etc that I want treated in a certain way).

Neil, I have done that numerous times. they just reappear. Used to work with some templates in W4.

Robert, I may end up doing that. For a casual user, is there something you can do with a template that you can't do from properties? I don't need details, just never found that templates did something for me I couldn't accomplish easily from a menu somewhere. Thanks, guys. Steve

Hi Steve,

Let's say you install the new VLC Player port for OS/2... you can
(1) Open the MM templates and assign the correct ones to VLC Player
(2) Create new templates for objects OS/2 doesnt come understanding out of the box (like .ogg?) and assign them
(3) Create scripts and easily assign scripts to object types.

You can do most or all of those by dragging and dropping the object icon (like the VLC Player icon) into the pertinent portion of the template's dialog creating a link to the object instead of a link to the file and directory. Move the program... and OS/2 still will find and use it.

There are other things as well. Some of the stuff above can be duplicated/done via the program object icon, but that's actually a backwards way of doing it and ultimately not quite as flexible.

Steve,

Some templates are marked 'No Delete'. Right click on the template, go to properties, then the icon tab, then click 'details' (at bottom). If the setup string (at bottom) has NODELETE=YES, then you can't (normally) delete it. I use an app called 'Blackhole' to get rid of them (search Hobbes). You must first uncheck the 'Template' box, like Neil says.

Also look in OS2.INI at the PM_Workplace:Templates entries. An entry in there for the removed template (if still there after deleting) must be itself deleted or the template will re-appear after reboot. If you delete an entry you should reboot immediately (do NOT CAD - regular shutdown). Be careful with this - a false move could spell trouble.

Good Luck!

Okay, David that was helpful. I was able to use Unimaint to remove most of the stuff. I'm down to the ones you have described having that extra script. Unimaint won't remove them from the ini file (it will uninstall the object, but it just reappears) but it doens't do any damage either. I will look into black hole later, right now LVM is making my life very difficult. Thanks for the pointer, I never saw that details tab underneath. Steve
