Trying to install in VirtualBox, getting SYS3175: access violation

Hi,
I try to use OS/2 Warp4 as VirtualBox guest, I was able to install, but have stability issues. Various programs crash with a SYS3175 (see attachment) error.

The programs do not crash always, most times they work. For example applying fixpacks is quite hard, since it often crashes, and I have to start again.
At the moment I try to build boot CDs with updcd but I fail since unpack2.exe fails often. The unpack2 program does, of cause, not crash at unpacking the same files.
And as said the unpack2.exe is only a example, many other also fail sometimes, with the same error.

My host OS is Ubuntu 10.04.1 64bit on one machine and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on the other one (two machines, no dualboot).

The guest OS I tried is OS/2 Warp4. I tried no fixpack, fp5, fp12, fp14 and fp15. I also reinstalled several times.

I'm getting out of fresh ideas now, can anyone help? Did anyone successfully install and use Warp4 on VB?

greetings

Thorsten Eggert

PS: I attached the error window

Welcome to OS/2, it usually isn't as hard as you are finding it.

First up please post what version of vbox you are using and what your general settings are for the OS/2 virtual machine.  It would also help to know what hardware you are using.

I have set up OS/2 in vbox on PCLinuxOS with out problems so it should be possible on Ubuntu  but can't help with win 7 as we don't have that here.

Hi Ivan,
thank you for your fast response! Sorry for letting out such an important information, perhaps my coffee was not strong enough (-:

At the moment I use 3.2.10 r66523, the latest version, as far as I know.

But I tried also some versions before. I'm on this issue since about one year, sporadic, far away from daily. I thought most time I had issues with the crashing application. But last week I started with updcd and recognized unpack2 and zip crashing very often. Due to this I got aware I have a more general issue, and probably no issue with my application.

Generally I use Linux as base system, I only tried the Win7 to ensure it is no linux specific issue. And since the Win7 machine is a desktop opposed to my Linux notebook the hardware is also very different.

VT is active on both installations, of cause.

Hmmm... I notice you had this issue at some point during install too... at what stage do you get that error?

There are actually times when installing Warp 4 on real hardware (ie: non-virtual) where people would run into those problems. IIRC, it is often caused by the MCA drivers. Now, whether that's still the cause, I am not sure as I am not 100% sure how vbox virtualizes hardware in the releases you are using, but it can't hurt to prevent the loading of the MCA drivers.

Simply open your config.sys file and REM out EVERY MicroChannel Architecture BASEDEV line.

For instance, you will see:
BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD
BASEDEV=IBM2FLPY.ADD  <---REM THIS ONE

Usually, a dupe with a two in place of a one is an MCA driver.

Certain hardware (which presumably affects virtualized hardware as well) will trap similarly (in UNPACK2 or elsewhere) with certain video card drivers selected. Try standard VGA and see if you still get the traps. But that should have been resolved ages ago.

Finally, updating the install disks with UPCD will sometimes cause this issue.
