I notice that when we discuss the best/preferred way to organize the OS/2 desktop everybody just put their own perspective and that's good.
But I want to go on the way on what would be the best way to organize the desktop as a default installation?

Using the example of djcaetano I got the feeling the best default desktop organization would be what he explain as "2. Basic Desktop". But the "Programs" folder should be organized in a better way.

But there is also the global trend. Which is a complete simplistic no icon desktop. Win7 only gives you the thrash can, MacOS does not shows you any icons on the desktop, only the dock at the bottom.

How many of you prefer the "no desktop icon" idea on the folder as default?

Sure.

It won't depend on what is on the desktop, but how the programs are organized. IMO it doesn't matter if I start browsing for programs from a desktop or a toolbar object.

If most people like a clean desktop - support that. (I don't work that way.)

The default program structure (for both installed programs and program objects) is important. BTW: The next item I like to have discussed is how to change default assocs. I don't like the eCS 2.0 ones. Maybe open another thread for that?

Cool, that didn't work either after I'd posted that.

Hi Martin

As you seem to be taking a vote on "the "no desktop icon" idea" I'd like to vote for desktop icons as the default.

Hi aschn

I find Association Editor useful for changing the default eCS associations to my preferred choices http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/assoed21.zip

Hi Pete, you got me totally wrong. That shows that my posting was misleading.

I'm not interested in how to change assocs, but how eCS sets default assocs.

BTW: Too bad that Ulrich didn't complete the Turbo Folders feature that's combined with the Extended Associations. The original WPS way to handle them is too complicated if you decide to change the associated primary app for multiple types or extensions. Moreover, having only one association for a file don't suffice in most cases for me. We need a kind of GUI to change assocs, more comfortable than AssoEdit. It should handle custom settings to apply them to a newly installed system.
