FWIW! FrostWire (Peer to Peer File sharing) now works with Java6 using eCS. Download the .jar from the Frostwire site (frostwire-5.2.9.noarch).

Hi klipp

Does it?

Is there a magical incantation involved?  ;-)

I tried this command:-
J:\JAVA\OPENJDK6\BIN\JAVAW.EXE -jar J:\Java\frostwire\frostwire.jar

Result: command line window disappeared, nothing happened, command line window reappeared, no Frostwire.

Trying this line instead:-
J:\JAVA\OPENJDK6\BIN\JAVA.EXE -jar J:\Java\frostwire\frostwire.jar

I get the following:-
java.lang.ArithmeticException: / by zero
        at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.getChosenSplashURL(Unknown Source)
        at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.showInitialSplash(Unknown Source)
        at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.main(Unknown Source)

I'm guessing that it needs classpath or something similar added to the command line.

How have you got Frostwire running?

For anyone else who wants to try Frostwire you need to download the tarball option on http://www.frostwire.com/downloads

Pete

Hi Pete, How're you doing?

I copied the frostwire-5.2.9.noarch directory in e:\programs\frostwire-5.2.9-noarch.
then created a program object with the following info:
Path and Filename =e:\java6\bin\java.exe
Parameters:-jar frostwire.jar
Working Directory:e:\programs\frostwire-5.2.9.noarch

and it loads and runs without problems!  (btw, you do need java6)

It launches nicely also here!
However, I have hard to make it work through my router/firewall so I can't tell about how it really works. Other software, as Azareus and QBitTorrent seems to configure this automatically through UPnP and Frostwire should also but doesn't.

Hi klipp

btw: I'm using:-

[J:\JAVA\OPENJDK6\BIN]java -fullversion
openjdk full version "1.6.0-ga-b22"

FrostWire 5.2.11

I now have a program object with the following (did not have the Working Directory set previously):-

J:\JAVA\OPENJDK6\BIN\JAVAW.EXE
-jar J:\Java\frostwire\frostwire.jar
J:\JAVA\FROSTWIRE

When Frostwire starts it displays an error message that starts "Frostwire has encountered an internal error. it is possible to recover and continue running normally." Then a bit about debugging.

There is a "Review" button which displays the errors. Sadly it is not possible to copy and paste that here - and I do not have enough time to type it due to length.

It does start with "java.util.MissingResourceException: image global_large doesn't exist." followed by a huge list of "at"s.

Exiting from the error message does not "continue" or exit Frostwire; it needs to be killed as it is not onscreen or in the Window List.

Changing the JAVAW.EXE to JAVA.EXE I see (in the command window) "Could not load properties from property file." but the Frostwire Setup Wizard appears onscreen. When I finished the Setup Wizard I see there is an error in the command window because this is displayed:-

Caused by: javax.naming.CommunicationException: DNS error [Root exception is jav
a.net.SocketException: socket closed]; remaining name '190.98.1.82.origin.asn.cy
mru.com'

This is followed by lots more errors.

I declined the offer of Frostwire "smiley" stickers.

More errors scroll past in the command window - and Frostwire appears onscreen and works; currently doing a quick download to test :-)

I suspect the errors may be ClassPath related.

I did contact the guys at Frostwire and was advised that other operating systems (inc Windows) start Frostwire using a script and was sent this Windows batch file:-

@echo off
SETLOCAL ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
SET PATH=%PATH%;.
SET CLASSPATH=.;.

REM Get all common jars.
FOR %%j IN (*.jar) DO (
  SET CLASSPATH=!CLASSPATH!;%%j
)

java -Xms32m -Xmx128m -Ddebug=1 -Djava.net.preferIPV6Addresses=false -ea -Djava.net.preferIPv4stack=true com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main

(The above from "java" to ".Main" is all 1 line)

I have not yet managed to get a working OS/2 version of the above script though... Any thoughts?

  I had similar trouble as Pete describes, including 'Out of Memory' errors. I tried various CONFIG.SYS settings and command line switches, but the only thing that worked for me to get Frostwire running was backlevel LIBC064 to 063. Now at least it will start...

Two things that are different, Pete from the way you are running Frostwire, compared to how its working for me are:
You're running a newer version of Java, I'm running plain old 1.6.0-ga. This surely is not a problem! But the older version of Frostwire (5.2.9) which I am using, might have something to do with how it preforms. I also got neumeros errors doing the install, but it did install and downloads and seeds correctly.
   I'm not going to be able to mess with this anymore until Monday, but then I'll download and install the newer version of Frostwire and see if it works for me.
   BTW, you mentioned you got a successful install using java.exe rather than javaw.exe -- were you then able to download & seed?

I'm using 1.6.0ga-b22 and Frostwire 5.2.11. My installation of java is by the wpi-package on hobbes. Parameters of that program object is -jar %**F . After install I just double click on the frostwire.jar (oddly enough I always have to doubleclick twice on every java-program to make it launch; that's however a little problem).

Hi klipp

Yes, using java.exe got things working; downloads and seeding worked fine.

I've now looked at the start script for Windows and found that I needed to modify it by adding all the Frostwire jar files to the classpath:-

@echo off
SETLOCAL ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
SET PATH=%PATH%;.
REM Get all common jars.
SET CLASSPATH=J:\Java\frostwire\commons-logging.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\frostwire.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\gettext-commons.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\gson-1.4.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\h2-1.3.160.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\httpclient-4.0.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\httpcore-4.0.1.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lucene-3.4.0.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lw-alexandria.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lw-azureus.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lw-common.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lw-osx_stub.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lw-resources.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\lw-setting.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\messages.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\MRJAdapter.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\splash.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\substance.jar;J:\Java\frostwire\trident.jar;
J:\Java\openJDK6\bin\java.exe -Xms32m -Xmx128m -Ddebug=1 -Djava.net.preferIPV6Addresses=false -ea -Djava.net.preferIPv4stack=true com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main

Not the most elegant solution but I could not figure out how to get this bit of the original script working in OS/2:-

REM Get all common jars.
FOR %%j IN (*.jar) DO (
  SET CLASSPATH=!CLASSPATH!;%%j
)

I guess rexx would be the answer if I get some time to look into it again.

With my modified script I now get a lot less errors and they seem to be DNS related, from the start of the debug log:-

[02/12/11 17:16] Log File Opened for Vuze 4.5.0.4
[17:16:50] DEBUG::Fri Dec 02 17:16:50 GMT 2011  Successfully migrated key management

[17:16:52] DEBUG::Fri Dec 02 17:16:52 GMT 2011::com.aelitis.azureus.core.versioncheck.VersionCheckClient::preProcessReply::-1:

[17:16:52] [stderr]    at com.aelitis.azureus.core.networkmanager.admin.impl.NetworkAdminASNLookupImpl.lookupDNS(Unknown Source

I'll have to ask the guys at Frostwire what the likely cause of this is - and possible solution(s).

Frostwire is starting and running fine though.

Hi melf

I installed from the zip files available at the java6 for ecomstation homepage http://svn.netlabs.org/java/

As I did not add anything to the config.sys file for java6, or my java142 installation, I simply use the full path to java to use when starting a java app. This does prevent any possible confusion between java installations.

I don't have to doubleclick twice on any java app to start it. I wonder what is causing that on your system?

Starting with java -jar frostwire.jar got rid of the connection problem! A normal cmd-file worked as well.
