Hi,

Does anyone know how to get SVG support for Firefox? I'm running version 2.0.0.6

Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert,

are you using a build by Peter Weilbacher ("PWM-FX")?
AFAIK, his "unofficial" builds are the only ones to include SVG support (...at least in contrast to the "official" builds)
See http://pmw-warpzilla.sourceforge.net/

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the reply... I should have added another post just a few minutes later... I found PmW-Fx and am currently running v2.0.0.5 but it does not seem to have SVG support enabled. It does recognize the SVG files, but offers me the standard "What do you want to do" dialog.

I did try Adobe's SVG test page, and that failed as well saying I needed a plugin.

Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert,

I must admit that I'm not too much into the stuff and currently don't have the needed software/os around to give it a test - have you checked http://www.mozilla.org/projects/svg/faq.html ?
(most notably the FAQ "why am I asked to choose a program to open SVG files?")

Perhaps that explains... if not, have a look at how to contact Peter Weilbacher on his site
http://www.weilbacher.org -> then use the moziall builds subpages and/or contact page.

Also, just for the fun of it, tell me which webpage you are trying to access/view, so I can give it a try tooo when I'm back home.

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

This one:

http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/svgtest.html

Or this one:

http://www.geocodeengine.com/SVG.html

Or directly to the SVG file here:
http://www.geocodeengine.com/Images/SVG.SVG

They work in Opera 9 for Windows... though Opera asks for one of them what I want to open it in first (in which case I pick Opera and it opens the SVG file in a new tab).

No luck so far... reconfigured the server, checked the release notes... I'll email Peter and see if he has any suggestions...

Thanks again,
Robert

So... with Peter's assistance I did the following to test things...

Restarted the browser with -safe-mode as an option... SVG support worked fine.

Now, after that, I was guessing it was a conflicting... something (add-on/skin/who knows). So, I started by disabling the DOM Inspector, and changing the skin to the default skin. Restarted the browser in normal mode (removed the -safe-mode option). Everything worked fine. Just for laughs, I decided to re-enabled the DOM Inspector and the skin I had been using... restarted the browser, and everything still worked fine.

So I am at a loss to what the cause was... but it works now...

Hi Robert,

...as it works now (glad about that) - who cares what the cause was? ;-)

OK, no... seriously. Like with all resolved problems, this might be a valueable information for others on how to track down such problems. I think it was a hickup in some chrome / user profile file...?
I noticed that sometimes, most notably with extensions, the order in which you install and the theme currently in use, the outcome is very different.

I also feel that the extension architecture and methods for the Mozilla-based browsers is a large black hole. Either it works or not. Then, there is also the missing *UN*-install that really sucks. I tend to think more than twice whether I do REALLY, REALLY need a specific extension prior to try to install it as I never can be sure if it would blow up the whole browser install in the end... :-)
