Hi

I am a Linux user, and have fancied trying OS2 for some time.

I have an old Compaq Deskpro, running XP, which cost me next to nothing of e-Bay. It runs XP very well.

I have a copy of OS2 V3 CD/floppies, and can not get the install to start, either in windows or from the DOS prompt. Alt-Cont-Del just re-starts XP, not the install disk.

I am not bothered about losing / damaging XP (we have not used Microsoft software for several years, and have no intention of starting).

Can anyone give me some advice.

Many Thanks

Hi Steve,

Just quickly, I installed Warp V4 on an old Compaq DeskPro En30 many years ago. First you have to set the boot sequence in the bios [ Alt + F2 ] at boot up as far as I remember, set to boot from floppy as 1st boot device. Save n exit then insert Install floppy n proceed from there. Will try verify all tonight, otherwise best of luck. You may need to get updated install disks. Only 2 if I remember correctly.

Will be good to hear of your progress.

Cheers,

John.

Thinking about it, this was the error I got when trying to dual boot OS/2 with Sam linux on one of my other machines.

It's avery long time since I installed W3, but anyway:

SYS01475 means  "The file OS2BOOT cannot be found"
SYS02027 means  "Insert a system diskette and restart the system."

So I guess it's the wrong diskette or a defect one. You can make the required diskettes with help of the CD. Don't remember name of executable, but there is also one *.bat file, so you can make them in Windows. I'm not familiar with the Compaq deskpro, but if HD is bigger than 4GB you have to download and replace one of the diskettes. Try eg http://www.warpdoctor.org/downloads.html .  Hope that helps another step forwards.

Those error codes are - cannot find os2boot and insert system disk and restart.  Sounds like the floppy disks might be bad.   Try new ones - you can create them from the cdrom.  In windows from a dos prompt look for file in root directory that says cdinstall or something like that.  It will prompt you to insert disks and will write the boot images on the disks.

If the Compaq has an HD bigger than 4GB the original warp 3 install disks will not recognise it properly.  You will need up to date disk images that recognise bigger HD's.  You can look on hobbes.nmsu.edu for later boot disks.

(1) The diskette spawning program on the CD is instcd or cdinst (I cannot remember the correct name right now). The program is a DOS .exe and it is in the root directory of the CD. You can run it from a winblow's DOS window. Prepare three blank diskettes, open a DOS window and run instcd directly from your CD. No parameters needed.
(2) After recreating your diskettes, you will need to patch the HD driver. Download Dani driver from Hobbes and replace the HD driver on the diskettes (the diskette that contais ibm1s506.add - replace with danis506.add and also replace ibmatapi.flt with daniatapi.flt). Because the available space on diskette will not suffice most likely, delete tedit.exe from the diskette (it is safe).
(3) Try again :)

Edit: Update CONFIG SYS  on the diskette after replacing the HD driver! You must
- add 'SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1' to the config.sys
- update the driver names in the config.sys. That means, change 'BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD' to BASEDEV='DANIS506.ADD' and so on. Or change the file names of the replacing files to the file names of the replaced files.

Many Thanks

Will have to venture up to the loft this weekend and find some floppies!

Remember BeOS took weeks to get working, but it was worth it in the end. Hopefully, OS/2 will be quicker.
