"TomLee,

Thank you for contacting Product Information.  None of our current solid
ink printers support OS/2.  That operating system was discontinued by
IBM in 2006.  It's possible that you may find a generic driver on the
Web, however, it would not be supported by Xerox.

Thanks again,

Marc

I had asked if they had any solid ink printers that would work with OS/2. I had replied that IBM might have stopped development of OS/2 but eComStation is still be developed. I told them to visit the eComStation site. I hope they change their mind.

Wow - how surprising that a printer manufacturer doesn't provide OS/2 drivers given the large amount of OEMs preinstalling the OS and the wide availability of software.

I'm amazed they even knew what OS/2 is and when IBM stopped providing support

I'm not... many Xerox printers were (and perhaps many still are) manufactured by IBM, or designed by IBM, or designed by Xerox for both, or designed by both for both, or based off IBM's patents and designs and manufactured by either (a) Xerox for Xerox and IBM and/or (b) both of them with their own label based off the same design with minor changes.

One such line that was notorious for such was the IBM InfoPrint line, and the Xerox DocuPrint line. There were numerous identical models under both lines that one or the other (or both) designed and/or built - like the InfoPrint Color 100/130 Series, which IBM claims to have designed and holds numerous patents on - which has an exact duplicate Xerox DocuPrint model.

So... they've had a very big, very long working relationship with IBM. At times, I really wondered if Xerox wasnt just a division of (or largely owned by) IBM Printing Division.

BWG: You may find that other Textronics (sp?) or Xerox drivers will work with that model - unless they recently updated the print language(s) used. Also, (if it supports PS2/3 - which I think most of them do) you may wish to try the PPD converter.

Hi BigWarpGuy

As is usual with most big companies the person who responded probably does not know anything about the product and could not be bothered to do more than look for OS/2 in the list of operating systems that you can download drivers for.

And, of course, OS/2 is absent from that list...

I am not sure which model you were looking at and picked on the Phaser 8860 to test my above theory - mainly because it states solid ink in the brief sales blah and others do not.

Sure enough, there are PPD files available for that printer for linux CUPS and Windows XP (32 and 64 bit) - possibly others but these are all I checked for.

That suggests to me that my theory is close to correct as it is possible to add PPD files to the OS/2 PSCRIPT.DRV driver creating a postscript driver for said printer.

Maybe you want to buy the printer and check out if you can get it to work  :-)

Regards

Pete
