Dear os2world.com staff,

just a short note:
**CONGRATS!**
I love the new site and the forum. It feel it much more comfortable to use!
Also, the website is a lot more "responsive" and I think that the CMS is great as it keeps the site updated almost instantly(!)... so in turn, my frequency of revisiting the site has increased by 3 to 5 times compared to what it was before! It's great fun and joy to use this website, man! :-)

As I don't like newsgroups and have stopped using the annoying yahoo groups, os2world.com is now my #1 and almost only "community" channel - also because of the great work you've done for the new site system.

I don't quite however enjoy the lite-blue theme too much, but heck - who cares.
Also, I'm a bit sad that my "posts" counter was reset to zero, but obviously, that's just the way it is, and also I'm not the only one "back to zero" - am I? ;-)

So finally here it is:
** THANK YOU **
for the ongoing efforts and the great new site!

BTW:
How about telling us a little about how things went on in detail? Installation, configuration and data migration of Joomla, what about the hardware that we are all relying upon every day? What OS servers and modules are you using...?

Regards,
Thomas

Thanks for the nice words and yes I think that we should be able to write an article about the different steps and a little documentation about the used hardware and software for the new system and why we choose what we did.

I too, THANK YOU for this site!!!  My first post is in SETUP, but I am returning to OS/2 after many years.

This site was needed 10-12 years ago, before I knew there was Internet!

I also am pleasantly surprised to see THUNDERBIRD and FIREFOX available for OS/2.  These are the follow ups to my favorite Netsacpe browser and email (communicator).   I already use them in my MAC G4 powerbook.

I have couple of general questions on OS/2.  Is there a version in Russian?  If yes, how to get it?  Any other languages?

Personall, I now am semi retired, and recall OS/2 as the very first 32 but OS.  Also, I recall OS/2 was very stable.  How many times I have had a Windows OS simply stop, and I needed to reboot, or occassionally, reinstall.  Aout 18 months ago, I went to MAC OS X, and am very pleased.  But there are some programs that I want to run that were WINDOWS based.  I hope to run them in OS/2 in Virtual PC.  (OS/2 also is like an old girlfriend, that I've never stopped loniv'  ;D )

The current MAC OS X is excellent.  Stable like OS/2.  But WINDOWS running in Virtual PC, crashes or freezes up, just like WINDOWS on a PC.  This proves, to me, it is the software, not the hardware, that is the problem.

I am really glad to be here, and THANK YOU for this site!

Hi W3HYM,

glad to have you back in the "brotherhood of die-hards" ;-)

If you take a look at ecomstation.com, there's a "where to buy" list of resellers.
http://www.ecomstation.com/where_purchase.phtml

For Russia, it's supposed to be http://www.ecomstation.ru but I'm not sure if there is actually a russian distribution of eComStation... nevertheless, if you're from Russia, then ecomstation.ru is a good starting point to make contacts or get information.
If you require additional web links for OS/2 and/or eCS let us know - I'm sure we can come up with a list of LOTS of links for software, support, chat, news and anything else.

Hope this helps. See you, Regards,
Thomas

warpcafe,

Thank you for the comments!  So far, looks like one of my highest priorities is to find a copy of WARP 4.51 or 5.52, so that I can install OS/2 in modern computers that don't have the 3.5" floppy drives.

On ecomstation, if I understand correctly, is that the follow on to OS/2?  Is there much new stuff in ecomstation from OS/2 v4.1?

One of the big problems with OS/2, was lack of software development.  After WINDOWS 98, most 32 bit software was developed for WINDOWS, not OS/2.  This marketing aspect of Microsoft, plus their having WINDOWS pre-installed in computers, left OS/2 in the dust.

Is it possible to run some WINDOWS 32 bit software on OS/2 platforn?  Same for ecomstation?

All the best,

David  --  W3HYM

I agree with Thomas' sentiments wholeheartedly... as for Win32 software, some will run under Odin (for instance, I occassionally use MED for Windows in Odin, and used to use some IM software and 7-Zip & other archivers under Odin - my IM software has been replaced with an OS/2 solution I really like, and Paul Smedley and others have ported virtually every archive tool I need to OS/2 so no Windows solution needed there anymore either), and most will run in Virtual PC v5.x (which you can find someplace online in numerous archives, key and all). I use VPC and WinXP on my Warp station to test HTML and JavaScript compatibility under IE 6 & 7. Some things VPC are lacking are USB support and better sound support (very limited sound support - depends on what sound hardware you are running).

Hi W3HYM,

...well I think for getting a copy of Warp 4 (.5x), you'll have to rely on eBay.
But: IIRC the eCS 1.0 or 1.1 (don't know by heart) had one CD that was a bootable Warp 4.5x so that could be a choice to go for... on the other hand, I full agree with Tom (the BigWarpGuy ;-) ) that the best would be to go for an eComStation copy.
Note that if you have a Warp license, you're entitled the "upgrade" version which is cheaper than the "full new" license (but exactly the same contents). Still, this update requires you to have a licensed version of Warp 4. As the GA version of Warp 4 will do, it'll likely be more easy to be bought on eBay than a 4.5x. If you however already have a Warp 4 around - go for the eCS update.

If you want to get a live impression of what eCS is about, there's still free downloads of the eCS 1.2 live demo CD available as an ISO image - it requires a somehow fast internet connection then - Modem or ISDN dialup won't do the job I suppose... the live demo is available at

  http://www.ecomstation.com/democd/

and provides you with a (hopefully) ready-to-run bootable copy of eCS 1.2 which does not install anything on your system (and doesn't "modify" your harddisks).

Hope this helps,
Thomas
