Resolve & Resolve2 file question

Ok, here's a dumb question. (Seeing that I've used OS/2 since 2.0).  What should be the numbers in both of these files be. I'm currently using AT&T dsl with some occasional problems like a page not loading all the way. If I start XP in a VM it works fine. In the Resolve file the entries are for my old dialup server. (primary dns, secondary dns). The resolve2 file has only one dns address number and it appears to be a gateway address as it almost matches the gateway address that AT&T uses.  Should I change the numbers and the domain server name in these files.  My gut feeling to to do it but I don't want to create a problem.  FYI my computer is directly connected to the dsl modem if that makes any difference.

Thanks

Marc

Hi Marc.

Not knowing just how you do things over in the US I am assuming your dsl modem is connected to your computer by ethernet.  If that is the case then I don't think the resolve files have much to do with your connection.  I don't have a resolve file on any of my boxes and the resolve2 (from 2006) has the two nameservers from my isp which have been the same since my days of dial-up.

You can always make a copy of your resolve2 then change the dns to what your isp uses.  If that doesn't work you can then change things back.

the file x:\mptn\etc\resolv2 is used by your local TCP/IP implementation to find what domain it is in as well as which DNS servers it should use to resolve names to IP address's.

If you are using DHCP you can ignore it as DHCP will overwrite anything you enter into the file.

The resolv file is left over from an earlier version of the same file but kept for backwards compatibility, as some older files reference resolv and not resolv2 (its been so long I cant remember which OS/2 TCP/IP version the change occured).

The file format is as follows :-

domain yourdomain.net
nameserver 192.168.1.254
nameserver 192.168.1.25
nameserver 192.168.1.2

and only requires at least one nameserver line to be included.
Typically you would enter your ISP's DNS server IP address's here as you would normally expect them to be quicker than using a DNS service further away.
