How do I get registration key on Installation CD? (eCS 2.0 GA)

I have the instructions for burning the ISO file to the CD using RSJ, but when I drag the registration key file in a .rtf or .txt file, RSJ refuses them. I have laboriously hand entered the key for RC4, I don't want to do that anymore. Steve

Hi steveb

You need to add the Reg Key to the ISO file and then burn the ISO to disc.

There was an app around to add the Reg Key to the ISO file... saw it on os2world in fact... Aha! this looks like the thread http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,2373.msg15862/topicseen,1/#new

Sadly, looks like the app has disappeared.

An alternative is to save the Reg Key to a text file eg RegKey.txt and copy that file to floppy disk or usb flash drive. Then insert media - with USB media make sure you get the device attached message - and point the installer to the correct drive:\file. The installer should then be able to read the Reg Key - sure beats lots of typing  :-)

Do you need to LVMify the flash drive?  I couldn't get the 2.0GA installer to recognize either a flash drive, or an existing FAT partition on my hard disk (that was there since before I installed eCS), and had to type the reg key by hand each time.  I definitely think I'm missing the point of flash in eCS -- I also can't figure out how to make it notice when I remove or replace the flash drive now that 2.0GA is installed (it only sees whatever it cached last time).

Yeh, drives need to have full LVM info on them but I've done this with most all of my devices at one point or another so it is now rare for me to find something that won't work under eCS (unless its A) new B) someone else's).

DFSEE it up is my recommendation. Delete partitions, clean up partition tables, reset Geo to LVM style, remove LVM info, add default LVM info, then create the partition using MiniLVM and format it using CMD or whatever you like. Usually works well enough. Can get tricky formatting it in FAT32 with booting back and forth but its doable.

Please note that not all of those steps may be necessary, just what I do and it seems to work so I've never refined the process :P

Hi John

You need to "LVMify" the flash drive and give it a drive letter if it is >2GB - most flash drives below this size are usually FAT and seen without any extra fiddling; those get the next available drive letter.

As Saijin_Naib said: use DFSee - www.dfsee.com - to add LVM info to existing hard drive partitions.

Hi John

Forgot to add that USBcfg is a useful app for checking/changing USB driver values in config.sys http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/USBcfgb071-eCS-only.wpi

Freaky!  OK I guess it's time to dig out some older, smaller flash drives.

Follow-up question:  is it possible to remove LVM from eCS entirely?  I don't seem to have the problem(s) that it solves so all it does is get in the way...

Thanks!

Hi John

There was some discussion in ngs about not using LVM with MCP2/ACP2/eCS awhile back. Sorry but you will have to Google to see if you can find it.

Not sure what problems LVM was introduced to solve but when you get to grips with LVM and the concept of Partitions and Volumes LVM does seem easy to use.
