No HoblinkX11 in 2.0GA??! (how to run GIMP?)

Hello everyone.

Recently I realized I have a need for some photo/graphics editing stuff, so I wanted to start GIMP (2.2.8).
In order to use GIMP it seems that the only option (for me) is to use Hoblink X11 server as X server emulation.

I was very surprised that I did not find HobX11 on eCS 2.0GA CD2 - as opposite to eCS 1.2R CD2, where the files were present and working.

Now if I try to install this 1.2R version of HobX11 on 2.0GA, I get the warning about license agreement violation and HobX11 will not start.
So this brings a slightly disturbing question: is there a way of either running HobX11 or some other way of running GIMP on eCS 2.0GA currently?!

Please help.  :'(

RobertM, thanks for the reply.

I already tried to run XF86 on my system, but never made it to initialize the video (on my ATI HD4670).  :(
Maybe there are some updated XF86 video drivers lying around...
OR: if anybody made it work under similar recent ATI card, please let me know how to make it work.

Also - my question was about HobX11 availability itself. Is there a big reason not to include it in 2.0GA as well?  ???

Well, you could use WeirdX, but the graphics tend to get garbled periodically so you have to keep refreshing the windows...  It's also a bit sluggish.

This technique was determined on ecomstation.apps by Steven Levine and David McKenna:

>>What might work, unless the HOB code protects itself against binary
>>edits is to use a renamed ecsreg.ini (i.e. hobreg.ini) and edit
>>xwpdllid.dll to look for this file.  This will protect the file from
>>getting overwritten.

Well... blow me down! It worked.

Here is what I did ....

1. Make a copy of xwpdllid.dll.
2. Right click the original, choose 'Properties', then 'Type'. Change type to
'Executable' (if not already).
3. Choose 'Become' and change to XWPProgramFile'
4. Close the Properties folder, then double-click xwpdllid.dll.
5. The file is opened in EPM (I have NEPMD installed - not sure if it comes
with eCS 2 or not). Search for ecsreg.ini. I found 2 instances and changed
them both to Hobreg.ini.
6. Save the changes.
7. Copy the ecsreg.ini from eCS 1.2 to C:\OS2\Hobreg.ini in eCS 2.0

Hoblink started with no complaints. Thanks Steven!

Regards,

Dave McKenna

Personally, I'd recommend using a proper hex editor rather than EPM.  You can also avoid the rigmarole with changing the WPS object type by opening the file from a command line.

Note that, since you have eCS 1.2, you have the perfect legal right to keep on using HOBLink X11, on any eCS version, so there's absolutely nothing legally dodgy about the above.

Licensing.  The contract with HOB has run out.

It's said, that here again we can see antipiracy stupidity of mensys/serenity. One has Hoblink from ecs 1.x, right to use it on ecs 2.0, but cannot without hacks. I doubt their antipiracy policy prevents anyone from using ecs illegally, but surely annoys legal users...

Wow, that's a pretty big assumption, isn't it? Who's to say that the authors of Hoblink didnt put in those "antipiracy" features? And who says that having it with v1.x gives you the right to use it on v2.0? Obviously, the people paying the license to the authors (Mensys/SS) dont seem to agree, and apparently, the authors dont either. That would make people who hacked it to use on v2.0 ILLEGAL users - not legal ones, contrary to your rather convoluted understanding of things.

So really, without knowing the true situation behind this, and with having little to no understanding of license agreements, copyrights and the local (per country) and international laws that apply to them, I think your post was way off base and uncalled for.

Best,
Rob

Stefan, the thing has been discussed at news.ecomstation.com and also a simple solution to continue using hoblink-x. Please search the postings there, I don't remember where exactly.

You are right - indeed, I am not sure about the licence agreement. However, if there is a statement that the product is only to be used on ecs 1.x, it is not in any way better. Perhaps the authors of hoblink forced such a thing, but... looking at the mensys/serenity policy with some of their other products - like for example beta of flash 10, which is still unusable on ecs 2.0, I doubt it.

However, as I said - you are right. I should read the licence, it's my mistake. You should also do it before writing such a post, for now your claims are as empty as mine ;)

LoL, I read the various licenses that came with eCS v1.2R  ;D
