Hi everybody,

I would like to purchase the mentioned netbook and I would like to know whether the network chipsets Realtek PCIe Gigabit Ethernet and Realtek RT5390 802.11b/g/n are supported by eCS 2.0 or 2.1.

Many thanks in advance.

Pete

Hi Carlo_Warp

If the Realtek PCIe Gigabit Ethernet is 1 of the below then there is a just developed driver available.

Download from:
http://www.ecomstation.com/downloads/r8110/r8110-0.1.3.zip

List of supported chipsets:

RTL8100e
RTL8101e
RTL8102e
RTL8110s
RTL8168b/8111b
RTL8168c/8111c
RTL8168cp/8111cp
RTL8168d/8111d
RTL8168dp/8111dp
RTL8169
RTL8169s
RTL8169sb/8110sb
RTL8169sc/8110sc

(Vendor ID: 10EC, Device IDs: 8129, 8136, 8167, 8168, 8169, 4300, c107,
0116)

Sorry, no idea if the wireless chipset is supported though...

It may be possible to get it working in "UnSupported mode" using the genmac package http://genmac.netlabs.org/en/site/downloads.xml but you will have to look into how to do that yourself as I've no idea.

Regards

Pete

Hi

I'm also studying on how to make an unsupported wifi device to run on eCS with GenMac.

Please read this presentation:
http://wse2008.warpevents.eu/uploads/tx_wseevents/wse2008_lan02_using_unsupported_nics_with_genmac.pdf

Also visit the GenMac mailing list:
http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.genmac.user

There are some unsuported devices listed by Doug Bissett at the GENMU project
(UNDER YOU OWN RISK)
ftp://genmac:unsupported@ftp.os2voice.org/

"GENMU v 0.1.0 contains drivers for Network Interface Cards (NICs) that users have made to
work, using the GENMAC UNSUPPORTED mode, OR they are UPDATED from what is supplied with
the "official" GENMAC v2.20 package. "

You can try but with a lot of newer Windows drivers it will not work. They use API calls that the Genmac wrapper does not support.

But you need to test it. But again you could have more luck with Windows 2000 drivers.

You messed up the FTP address. Hopefully this will work better:

ftp://genmac:unsupported@ftp.os2voice.org/

It is very easy to build a new driver for GENMAC. Unfortunately, they don't always work. Just find the xxx.sys file from windows, and export the registry entry for the device. Then modify a NIF file to match.

UNSUPPORTED mode does not work with WiFi devices. Apparently GENMAC fails to enable whatever it is that XWLAN needs, so it won't work. Some people have managed to edit genm32w.os2 to get a few WiFi devices to work (remember that the one that is actually used is in C:\IBMCOM\macs). NOTE: that Willibald Meyer (the author of GENMAC) has expressly forbidden distribution of modified versions of his work, so you can publish a patch, but do NOT distribute a patched file.

Hi DougB

What is the final factor that decide that the driver does not work on unsupported mode.

I'm trying a Atheros AR5B93 wireless. I had packed the files and install the driver with MPTS.
The gemac loads as unsupported without any error message.
I installed the xwlan 3.10 (since it didn't show up).

When I tried to search for a wireless network, xwlan does not list any network adapter on the list.
Is this the message that does not work?

That is what happens with WiFi devices. It seems that GENMAC, in UNSUPPORTED mode, does not start the support that XWLAN needs, so it can't locate it. The only answer, that I know of, is to use a HEX editor and modify genm32w.os2. Find the device that matches as closely as possible, then modify the name, ID, and driver files, to match your device. Then remove "UNSUPPORTED" from the NIF file, and install it again. Sometimes, that will work. Just don't distribute a patched file.
