Is the kernel in Ecomstation 2.0 the same as in IBM OS/2 Convenience package 2 ie version 4.52 ?

What is the differance between IBM OS/2 4.52 and IBM OS/2 Client 4.52 , are these the same software ?

Is the MCP2 4.52 version CD bootable and if so is this installable on the current ( latest ) hardware ?

Hi Paul

I do not have eC2.0 yet but know that the ACPI driver involved requires the 14.104a SMP kernel, which is the last of the IBM kernels I believe, if using a dualcore cpu. That kernel package is available from both ecomstation and http://www.os2site.com/sw/upgrades/kernel/index.html

I think that IBM OS/2 4.52 and IBM OS/2 Client 4.52 are the same package - unless IBM OS/2 4.52 refers to a server package.

I believe the MCP2 4.52 version CD is bootable - but I decided to go with ecomstation instead so do not know from experience...

No, you cannot install MCP2 4.52 to current hardware if that hardware involves an x64 cpu.You could install by hooking the hard disk involved to a 32bit cpu system, installing and then transferring the disk to a x64 system. There are a couple of other steps involved but you will need to Google newsgroups for relevant posts.

Of possible interest: eCS1.2R and eCS2.0 install on current hardware including x64 cpu based systems :-)

From all appearances all roads should lead towards the up and coming "REXX/OS"

( http://rexxos.netlabs.org/en/site/index.xml )  ;)

The information which was timely provided by "herwigb" in another thread on this web site reads in part as follows:-

"The netlabs.org develpers community proudly announces a new project called
REXX/OS, intended as the brand new incarnation of the IBM operating system OS/2,
being completely realized using the widely known and proven REXX scripting
language. As Adrian Gschwend, founder of netlabs.org states, the project has already
reached its first milestone. The kernel, currently hosted in a virtual OS/2 session,
successfully boots and basic device drivers are available.

A first public preview is available for download from the netlabs.org website.
Considering the potential of this revolutionary design for the OS/2 community,
netlabs.org is prepared to handle the expected several dozen downloads of this
preview. Several screenshots have also been posted.

The new operating system overcomes the limitations of the current kernel and the
graphics subsystem (PM), for example the single input queue.

For the first time the kernel and the graphics engine take advantages of REXX on
operating system level, namely the easy extensibility by end users and system
administrators. This also includes system security services as well as including
additional hardware support into existing device drivers.

It would be nice if members of the OS/2 Communities share their thoughts on this meaningful and purposeful development that will undoubtedly and positively impact the OS/2 communities around the world.   ;) ;D ::)

Hey all,

As an FYI, as far as I remember from when that link was first posted a couple years ago, the REXX/OS link on NetLabs is an old April Fools Joke. There is no such thing - though please correct me if I am wrong.

And, as it is now (and as it has been for about a decade), REXX can be used to control, modify, extend or operate with various components of the WPS.

Hey "RobertM, Global Moderator". If some think that the "2008 Smart ForTwo"
( http://www.smartusa.com/ ) thread by our colleague "BigWarpGuy" was not relevant and made a whole, whole lot of sense - Think Again! I for one hesitated to click on the link but the thinking now is very, very different; so, with respect to the April Fools "joke" about the REXX/OS... let us remember what was written by the famous William Shakespeare (it is believed); and, that is - "Many True Things Are Often Spoken Of As A Joke"; and, some investors (banks...) are known to put their money where the business developments are. See the attached link (re: feasibility studies for the development of bio-energy....)  8) :

Hey ""BigWarpGuy"; told ya I sent the "link" south of the border... do you think you know why?  ;D

DAMN, RobertM! Why did you tell it?? You spoiled the joke!  ;D
I was keeping ROTFL because Saborion2 believed in it (good one, Herwig!!) and now the fun's over. Too sad.
Hmm... okay, back to work then.

Oh really! Re: "DAMN, RobertM! Why did you tell it?? You spoiled the joke!  ;D
I was keeping ROTFL because Saborion2 believed in it (good one, Herwig!!) and now the fun's over. Too sad..." Well guys, with nothing else to do with your spare time and with the need to conserve on the bandwidth usage there are no one else to blame other than yourselves; and, now that the "drilling down to the micro-kernel" has already began under code-name "CASSINI" you certainly must have done it to yourselves given that the teams (OS/2) that were assembled in Boca Raton were either Killed In Action (KIA) or are still Missing In Action (MIA). :( :( :( Now that all (including "Herwig") have given away your positions to the "Romulans" (Reading-Redmond Campus) ( http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/library/aliens/article/70706.html ) its your own reputation at stake. So, let us see who gets the last laugh having been waiting so long on Chicago, VOYAGER (with eComStation not yet in sight)  ::) ::) ::)

Now, thanks to GOTHAM CITY'S PROJECT CASSINI "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"  ;D ;D ;D

Something constructive in advance:

OS/2 MCP 2 Version 4.52 came with kernel revision 14.086

eComStation 2.0 comes with kernel revision 14.104a

Saborion2: Sorry, I could not resist, really.

Some of your statements clearly show that you have no idea, what you are talking about. That's is no problem for a rookie, but it means reading, learning, asking questions and understanding (that process never ends, BTW). Broad statements are definitely a way to make others want to make fun of you.

That's what came to my mind, when you demanded a 64bit upgrade to the kernel as an addition in the REXX poll in order to "play" with Linux and Windows kids in a modern hardware park. That makes as much sense as demanding a rocket engine for your coffee machine in order to play tennis with your friends.

So, I don't think I have put my reputation (or the one of eCS (OS/2) or whatever) at stake, when I pointed you to REXXOS which probably gave all of us a good laugh back then (and it even does today, have you tried it?).

Anyway, for playing with Linux and Windows kids, REXX (and its integration into the OS) is still one of the killer features of eCS (OS/2) which can be used quite nicely to make the jaws of Windows and Linux Kids fall to the ground, because you'll hardly find a better integrated language on other platforms.

Kind regards,
Herwig B.

BTW Chicago was Windows95

http://www-304.ibm.com/jct09002c/gsdod/solutiondetails.do?solution=14283&expand=true&lc=en

Like a "Worm Hole" there is former Dutch village south of the border called "BETERVERWAGTING" whose meaning is "Better-To-Walk-In"; and, now that you are all trapped in the "WARP 4.52" Core the only way out prove your intelligent way out is via blasting through the "Time Lock" of the "CASSINI CORE"; depending on how many were involved in the April Fools "Joke"... you have got to remember that there is limited room in the "Smart ForTwo". So now, how do you plan to avoid/escape the COMFETAR LIVE ON CASSINI "BETERVERWAGTING" (Worm Hole) pull.

Welcome to the "GOTHAM CITY" influenced Beterverwagting Playing Field and to "TEAM CASSINI".  ;D ::) ;D

To the extent that the "Official Warp v4.5 (Fixpack 15/MCP) Kernel. (was on) 26th Oct 2001...." just how ready are eComStation, Vista et al (without the arrival of VOYAGER or CASSINI) for COMFETAR LIVE!!!

herwigb

Why don't you ask IBM? - They can tell you. If they port that Comfetar Live to OS/2, it will also run on eCS.
As IBM Lotus Symphony is based on OOO 1.1.5, which runs on eCS (OS/2), I see no obstacle, in case IBM decides to do this.

This is all no question of kernel (especially not whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit).

So in your "speak": ECOMSTATION 2.0 IS PERFECTLY READY FOR COMFETAR LIVE!  ;D ::) ;D

And honestly I don't care for Vista or Team Cassini. Voyager is a completely different story (but once again that is not a kernel story, at least not in the near future).

Herwig B.

Should you have been following these threads very closely you would realize that there was a separate thread created for questions related to bounties where a bounty for a COMFETAR LIVE related Application is up for a bounty; and, as far as I am concerned the team ably lead by Kim Haverblad is doing more on this forum in addressing (discussing) OS/2 and eComStation related issues than either IBM and/or Serenity Systems International.

They say "A Picture Tells A Thousand Words". Take a look at this video clip attached below and tell us "If You Can See The Trees (OS/2), But For The Forests" (Windows) in the Gates' address at the 2008 Annual Inter-American Development Bank conference.  8)
