HDD Copy

I'm starting a new thread because I am getting confused by answers to the old one--OS/2 Imaging Software.

I need to copy partition for partition a failing HDD to a new HDD. Am getting very frustrated with lack of results.
Here is my system configuration:
  866mhz cpu--AMD, I think
  2 physical HDDs--1 system, 1 data
  Read only CD-Rom drive
  3.5 floppy
  256K(?) RAM
The data drive is failing. How do I copy the failing drive to a new drive?

I have tried disconnecting the System HDD and booting from floppy, have downloaded bootAble to a CD (how do I unzip a file on a CD?) but not used it yet(see unzip question). Booting from OS/2 Warp 4 install floppies with the System HDD disconnected hangs when it tells me to insert the Operating System CD into the CD-Rom drive. So far, the only thing that works is booting from the System HDD with the failing HDD connected as Primary slave. When I try to boot from the System HDD with the new HDD connected as Primary Slave, the boot sequence hangs looking for some info from D:\, which is on the failing HDD.
Like I said earlier, I need the new data drive to be an exact copy of the failing HDD. How do I make that copy?????????

I have the failing drive backed up to tape--full backup of all partitions & the data in them. I might try to reconnect the failing drive as Primary Slave and backup each partition separately. The only problem with doing that is when I disconnect the failing drive and connect the new drive as Primary Slave, the system won't boot(see above).

BTW--El Vato--I don't have PowerQuest Drive Image, which is, evidently, now owned by Symantec/Norton. There is nothing listed on their site that works with OS/2. Also, I can't get into the boot sequence far enough to even attempt to manually create new partitions on the new HDD.

Sorry for this long post, but it's the only way I can explain my predicament.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Dennis,

I've personally used the very powerful DFSee not so long ago for an exact same problem using the bootable disk image. Requires no running system. Herewith link :http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee9xx_dsk.zip

Download and unzip then run exe to create bootable floppy disk. I then installed new HDD as primary master and failing HDD as secondary master. Insert bootable floppy n boot up. From the DFSee console I then created the partitions as necessary on new HDD then proceeded to duplicate the partitions from the failing HDD to new HDD one at a time via the menu items at top of DFSee console. Then removed failing HDD and setup system back to normal, powered up and Voila! :) All systems up n running no problems but a chkdsk at startup.

Hope you reach the same success that I had. Still get the feeling it was pot luck as am NO fundi at all. Many thanks to Jan van Wijk for an invaluable tool.

John.

I have left the user name/password in your personal messages (on the left box icon of this post).

Download the file el_vato.exe and place it in a temporary directory.

Open an OS/2 command prompt (the executable will uncompress under DOS also) and change directory to where you downloaded the file.  Say, for example, that you created a directory TMPDOS, then change to that directory; once there type:

TMPDOS>el_vato

PKSFX (R)   FAST!   Self Extract Utility   Version 2.49    08-01-96
Copr. 1989-1996 PKWARE Inc. All Rights Reserved. Registered Version
PKSFX Reg. U.S. Pat. and Tm. Off.

Searching EXE: TMPDOS/EL_VATO.EXE
  Inflating: DISK_1.DSK
  Inflating: DISK_2.DSK
  Inflating: loaddskf.exe

Have on hand two (formatted preferably) floppy diskettes.  Insert the first one and type:

loaddskf DISK_1.DSK   A:

and the first diskette will uncompress into your first floppy.  After the process stops, remove and Label the floppy as (what else?) disk 1.

Insert diskette two and type:

loaddskf DISK_2.DSK   A:

Again, after the process finishes, remove the diskette and label it as, yes, disk 2.

Now you are ready to clone your old hard disk.  Insert floppy disk 1 into your machine where you are doing your recovery operation.  Reboot your machine, if necessary, since you HAVE to boot from the floppy diskette 1.

When prompted insert diskette labeled disk 2 and simply follow the intuitive graphical instructions.

NOTE and WARNING:

I am assuming that your hardware (hard disks) are properly jumpered --hence seen by the DOS operating system in the diskettes.  If that is not the case, please resolve the hardware jumper and/or IDE/ATA, etc., etc. issues before proceeding.  In other words, I am assuming that you followed the suggestion that I made in prior post: http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,618.msg3092/topicseen,1/#new

Additionally, every recovery operation is unique (and dangerous).  My providing you with these resource does not imply that I will be responsible for any potential problems that you may experience --including data loss.  I am simply providing the advice and resources in good faith with the intention to help a fellow OS/2er.

If you do not agree or think that the advice and or software is too risky, you are not bound to make use of any of those resources.

Dennis,

Yesterday (01-24-2008), I sent you another email to the address you provided me in my local mailbox (dated 01-16-2008) --I have no idea why your local inbox messages keep disappearing.  Nor why, apparently, you have not received the email addressed to the contact information you provided me.  On my side I have not received any bounces from your domain on the three(3) instances of email communication that I sent you.

Regards.

Sorry for not answering. I've been out of town on a new job. I got your last email. Thanks. Now I just have to have the time to follow your instructions.
If I am slow to answer, it's because I have been out of town a lot and am unable to answer my emails, etc. unless I am home. Once I have time to get my notebook fixed and both wi-fi and internet connectable, I'll be able to answer posts & emails much faster.
Again, sorry for not answering sooner.
