Welcome aboard.  :)

Here's a start;

  • FM/2,            (file Manager)
  • KMP,             (for video)
  • MR/2 ICE,      (or PMMail/2)
  • NFTP
  • OpenChat/2,  (IRC)
  • PM123,          (MP3 + player)
  • PMView,        (Graphics viewer)
  • ProNews/2,   (News reader)

I'm sure many more people will add to this.

You can find all these programs on Hobbes

I hope this helps.

Espen, try this page. I found it much nicer to use than Hobbes, especially in the beginning when I really was not familiar with eCS programs.
http://www.ecomstation.it/ecsoft2/index.php?language=en
(Even though the Linky I sent you is for the English, it will probably end up italian, just click the Union Jack Flag in the top right to put it back to English again)

More or less the same thing as hobbes, a little less extensive, but its much better organized, has nice descriptions, and even has pictures! :)

My Must-haves include the above, but also MrMessage (for AIM/ICQ), Z! Player (for streaming Interwobs music), Mplayer, K Movie Player, WarpVision GUI, Odin, OS2MT. I could go on for a while longer, but you get the point. Have a browse through and enjoy :D

My favourite program for the time being is GIMP - where Alex Taylor have put together a complete warpin pack, which you find here: http://www.cs-club.org/~alex/os2/utils/index.html . Use it together with hoblinkX11 delivered with CD2 in eCS 1.2.  Works seemless and works very well.

Hi Espen

I do not know if you have need of "office" software (wordprocessor, spreadsheet etc) but if you do here is a cheap way to run OpenOffice115 for Windows in eCS

You need to install the Innotek Runtime followed by Acrobat Reader V5, Yes, the Windows version but with a "wrapper" to enable it to work with eCS (OS/2) - the Innotek Runtime provides some of the win32 "wrapper" environment required and must be installed first:-

Runtime  http://download.innotek.de/innowin/112b20/InnoTekRuntime_112b20.exe

Acrobat  http://download.innotek.de/acrobatos2/5.1Preview1/OS2KitAcrobatReader51Preview1.exe

Now you need a copy of OpenOffice for Windows V115  http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.5/index.html

Install the Innotek Runtime and then Acrobat reader.

Now open the drive:\path\acrobatreader directory and RMB (Right Mouse Button click) on the ar5os2.exe program and select to Create Program Object, name it Innotek Win32 and locate it on the Desktop.

Now open whatever directory you downloaded OO115 to and drag'n'drop the setup.exe progam onto the above program object, (possibly) called Innotek Win32.

You should get the install start and run without problems and end up with a very useable Office package.

Speaking of Word Processors, there's always;

  • Describe                                    Not too hard to find a copy of that floating around.
  • IBM Works                                 Used to come with OS/2, but is still available.

  • Lotus Smart Suite, (Word Pro)    You can buy that or, look around.
  • Papyrus                                      Old versions are available for purchase. Supposedly a new one is being worked on.

  • Star Office for OS/2                   Old, but able.

There are a few more lesser ones, some VIO, but that's the biggies.

There are many, many more programs out there for OS/2 that are worth the effort to find.

Really, however, you should specify and area of interest and we can provide you with more information.

I hope that helps you some.

Hello

Thanks for all the help.
I have found lots of good programs, and the tips was good.

Now, i'm trying to get my samba to work. From the base install of eComStation 1.2R I find my samba shares. but I can't copy the files or read them. And it only works to se the files when i use the 'sharing and connecting' program mount the share from there.
When I trye to use the 'file and print' browser I can see the computers, and the shares on the computer. But when I click on it I get 'No objects were found that matched the specified find criteria'
The samba server is running on linux and is samba 3.0.25b.
It works on mac and linux clients

where do I begin to look for solusens?

espenbo, I suggest you download and install "samba-3.0.28-os2-20071211-v1.wpi" along with ESAMBAC.WPI. You can also download some excellent samba utilities from http://members.aon.at/herwig.bauernfiend/samba/index.html. Some of herwig's utilities, which take the pain out of configuring samba are included in the 3.0.28 version of samba for os2.
