HELP: NET3057 Error after installing FixPack

Hey all,

I recently installed a fixpack for WSeB CP using OS2MT. All went well during the install and reboot - with one exception.

After the reboot, when the server tries starting the NetBIOS server I get a NET3057 error (which has a rather useless help message as noted here):

NET3057: An internal consistency error has occurred.

Cause:  A software error occurred.

Action:  Try the operation again.  If the problem persists,
start the workstation again.  If the problem still persists,
report the problem and the method by which it can be reproduced
to your IBM support representative.

As I dont have an "IBM support representative" I figured I'd ask you all and hope you have a clue as to what's up. The system is running WSeB CP2 PF - and now the latest CP FP - and HPFS386 with all HPFS386 fixes installed.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

Automated tools are nice ...until they fail.  Install the updates/fixes the manual OS/2 masochist way and leave OS2MT for the script kiddies --at least for this occasion ???

Does the Net3057 occur during requester or server startup?

Please post your CONFIG.SYS, IBMLAN.INI, PROTOCOL.INI and HPFS386.INI, or e-mail them to mobybrick@hotmail.com. If you can include your syslevel info then that'd be great, too.

I've noticed OS2MT fail to do some installs properly, most notably Odin and Xfree86, the two things I used it for previously. Now, I dont use it at all because I do both installs manually and get Flash7 from the os2bbs site. I dont think that OS2MT writes all the requisite .ini values it may have to for certain installs.

El Vato:
Wonderful suggestion, and you'd think I'd know better... but too late for this occassion. In watching it, all OS2MT did on this occasion was download, unpack and then start the CSF utility, so I don't think it is the culprit here.

Moby:
Thanks, will email you the files in a few. And sorry, the error occurs after the requester and messenger service are started, and after the failed attempt to start the server service (as a result of it failing... "NET3057: The service service could not be started...").

The config.sys file should not be an issue... I backed that up and after the updates were complete and I got the error (after various reboot and service restart attempts), I replaced it with the backup copy. Still no luck.

The HPFS386.ini file hasn't been changed by the update utility - compared that to a backup... so I think that leaves the protocol.ini file. :(

Since then, I have re-installed the networking services - no luck. I've manually deleted the NET.ACC file (as on one earlier occasion I found it to be the issue), then re-installed the networking services - still no luck.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Robert,

Got your files.

Can you please edit the IBMLAN.INI file, and change the line

SRVSERVICES = NETLOGON,LSSERVER,DCDBREPL,TIMESOURCE

to just SRVSERVICES=

Then, start the server. If it starts, start the others one-by-one that are remaining to see which one gives a problem.

Also, can you do a DIR /S of the C:\IBMLAN and C:\IBM386FS directories to a text file, and send them please.

Also, were any settings in IBMLAN.INI or PROTOCOL.INI ever changed, or are they at default, as far as you are aware?

Cheers,
Moby.

...also, please update your HPFS386.INI file and reverse the CACHESIZE and MAXHEAP values. It won't make any difference to this problem, but a cachesize of 2Mb will crucify performance - and might not be enough for some LAN server buffers.

Have you also conciously changed any PROTOCOL.INI settings?

Also, does the volume for the audit and error logs have room?

IP8605 is a good level usually.....

Cheers,
Moby

Weird... I hadn't noticed that... it was 128MB (131072). I've set it back to 131072 and left the MAXHEAP setting the same (16384).

No. The last change I made to them was using the MPTS tool when I switched from Intel Pro100 cards to the Intel Pro1000 cards. That was months ago (almost a year). I haven't made any manual edits to it, and the copy I sent you is the backup copy from before I installed the FixPack (which is the one I am running now). When the issues starting the server happened after the FixPack, I restored the backup PROTOCOL.INI file and backup CONFIG.SYS file as they were from before the FixPack.

Well, Drive C is down to 100MB... though I havent enabled auditing on any shares. As a just in case, I've (just) cleared out some files and raised that to just shy of 1GB.

Thanks,
R

Sadly, the same results... it starts the requester, then tries starting the server and fails in the same way.

Oh... in looking at the times the first file was written, it is also quite possible that the backups made by the installer are not of the original file (the earliest backup of 3 the fixpack installer did is over an hour older - and the 3 are a few minutes apart).
