Hey all;

QuoteHello eCS and OS/2 Community,

I just finished a build of an eComStation computer for a customer and decided to write an article about it on our company blog.

http://blog.eracc.com/2008/04/07/building-a-modern-ecomstation-os2-personal-computer/

So, the next time someone tells you that eCS will not work on modern hardware point them to this article. If you want to comment on our blog you will need to register at the blog. All comments are moderated.

It's good to know that there is a least one company "Building A Modern eComStation (OS/2) Personal Computer"....; so, where are the modern applications like Lotus Notes 8.0, Lotus Sametime, Lotus Symphony et cetera, et cetera... to run on the "Modern eComStation (OS/2) Personal Computer". Does anyone remember what were some of the downfalls/pitfalls of the OS/2 Operating System in the days gone by.  8) 8) 8)

Hi, Saborion2

I'm an ordinary, but interested, enduser. I think it's great when people like Gene shows engagement and show what's possible with eCS. When it comes to applications, I guess the first thing is to get functional, compatible and up to date ones and if possible also native. For my part I really don't care if it's Lotus Notes or something else; OO, Lucide, Firefox, XWLAN are examples of apps we didn't have some years ago which fullfills those demands.

For the last years I've used my eCS computer in my work and studies in a way that hadn't been possible just 5-6 years ago. Connecting to hotspots, reading, writing and sharing documents, doing presentations without worrying about compability, being participant on a modern learning platform and there watching lecture videos, scanning with my USB-scanner, installing my eCS on a dual core laptop etc.

Well, I can't see any reason to be ironic about the recent developement, I rather think one should be quite humble.

Hi,

@saborion: Ask Lotus where the software is - usually people should ask the manufacturer first, hm? ;-)

@melf: Saborion is not ironic. That's just him, he's serious. ;-)

Cheers guys,
Thomas

Hi "melf"

Just so you know... saborion drew some inspiration to become what he is at this present time from the "Kim Haverblads" and "warpcafes" on this site.  ;D . Here is the deal, after what looked like IBM had all but abandoned the unwanted child (OS/2) there appeared that now famous Petition Letter from the now OS/2 World Foundation to provide an home for the unwanted child; and, there in the "child's corner" were the "warpcafes" to see that it (almost past 21 years now) continue to grow up; and, now eligible to participate at the Olympic Games (and can now train in the Modern Hardware and Software playgrounds/arenas in which the Windows, OSX, Linux... athletes also train).  ;D ;D ;D You will know I suppose that in most cases where games (international sporting activities) are concerned there are the teams' coaches, supporters, doctors or what have you; and, "saborion" may very well be any one of these and that is the degree of seriousness involved as it is understood to be meant by "warpcafe".  ;D ;D ;D

Re:
Quotesaborion: Ask Lotus where the software is

If the Second Petition Letter to IBM can be seen as a guide/reference... then, undoubtedly in time, there is every confidence that issues such as these will be addressed in like manner. How about "a face-to-face meeting between OS/2 World Federation's and IBM's, Intel's, Lenovo's... Representatives in the very near future".  ::) ;) ::)

Saborion2. I also want to see Lotus Notes 8, Lotus Sametime Connect 8, Lotus Symphony and other eclipse SWT (Rational Application Developer, Rational Web Developer, Rational Software Architect) related tools running under OS/2.

Analyzing the requirements we need.
1.- An updated Java Runtime JRE - Possible a port of OpenJDK will possible be good, but I'm not sure how complete it is.

2.- A port of Eclipse Standard Widget Toolkit
Leonardo Pino is working on port of Eclipse SWT, but only of the latest version that is available for JDK 1.4, and he is currently working with their own resources (it is not his full time job). But that will be a good starting point to later updated to a current version (but we require a newer Java). There is also a open bounty for it.

It is possible but it is a hard work. When we have this two projects ported we can evaluate how easy or hard will be to grab the Windows/Linux versions of Lotus Notes 8 and Sametime to make it run under OS/2-eCS.

Hey "BigWarpGuy", Hey all,

While we are on the topic of "Building A Modern eComStation (OS/2) Personal Computer" I was just wondering if any have read where
Quote"HP (has uncovered) the 2133 Mini-Note PC"
and thought that if you have not had the opportunity to read about it you may do so by following the attached link:

QuoteSurprising virtually no one, Hewlett-Packard has finally officially announced its new low-cost, low-power NetBook-style mini-laptop, called the 2133 Mini-Note PC. Of course, we've been following every detail of this system for months, including the presumed launch date, but they're finally officially on sale starting today, from $499-$749.

Anyway, if this "baby" can run under OS/2-eComStation...

then our good friend "BigWarpGuy's" (Smart For Two) will have to play second fiddle.  ;D ;D ;D

Are you referring to my Fortwo or my Asus EEE PC that I want to run eCS on?   ???
I think my Fortwo would not mind playing second fiddle. :)

Wow, now that is the best "client quote" I ever could think of if I was the one in charge of doing eCS marketing... also, if someone would ask me what the benefits and achievements of eCS are looking back the last couple of years, THIS would be the best summary!
So if there is someone listening here from a company like Mensys or Serenity (-cough-, hint, hint!!) print this out, cut to size and stick it to your forehead, dammit, or put it on top of your screen or besides your bathroom mirror and finally come up with a marketing responsible and organisation behind that!

-calming down-
Very positive, summarizing, facts-based and neutral speak, melf! I really like this!

Thomas

As was said before... this OS/2 World Foundation web site and contributors like "warpcafe" may be doing more for "Mensys or Serenity (-cough-, hint, hint!!)" than they may be currently doing for themselves; and, now looking back ten or so years ago in this same vein; how about substituting "eCS marketing" for IBM OS/2 Marketing; and, "Mensys or Serenity" for IBM/Lotus. And, what a wonderful OS/2 World it would have, could have been.  ;D ::) ;D ???
