The question is: Here we are in a world with a situation where one cannot (it will appear) really say that eComstation at this time offers the best of offerings in an modern Operating System one would really like to have... so, what value or augmentation will the

QuoteCommunity of eComStation users

bring to an already established "OS/2 World Foundation" as well as that of "WarpStock".

There is a saying that "Unity Is Strength".  8)

BTW, Where are the "Killer Applications"; and, those under development that run under OS/2-eCS?

Best regards.

There are quite a few of them right here...
http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,359.0/
at the Your OS/2 Abandonware Wishlist thread.

The OS/2 app that started the thread, Visualizer Querry, is totally Workplace Shell aware.  As far as database reporting is concerned, this qualifies as a killer application!  So, quite a few do exist, but you just can't get to them unless the developer releases such applications to Netlabs or Hobbes.

Hi Terry, You also said in your earlier post; re:

#1 "OS/2 Abandonware Wishlist" pick would be:  Visualizer Query.  Doug Clark's November 2001 OS/2 eZine article, "Visualizer Query," was a bonus article to his superb 12-part "OBDC on OS/2" series that ran in OS/2 eZine from May 2001 through April 2002.

As the article's screenshots attest, this is indeed a "killer application" since it is one of the few database apps that was fully integrated into the OS/2 Workplace Shell.  Visualizer Query requires either an OS/2 DB2 CAE, or OS/2 DB2 server.

OS/2 eZine's - Visualizer Query => http://www.os2ezine.com/20011116/page_4.html

OS/2 eZine's - OBDC on DB2 (part 7) => http://www.os2ezine.com/20011116/page_8.html

Astrac purchased the Visualizer Query rights from IBM, and later stopped offering this database reporting application apx. two years ago.  The last Astrac Visualizer Query offering was optimized for DB2 v.5x.

Here is the deal - There were no significant enhancements to the OS/2 Operating System by IBM between the last five to ten years while

While I am not quite sure what time frames we are talking about here with respect to the latter - do these not, when taken together place OS/2-eCS users in an handicapped position (with no recent enhancements or the means to do so on an "Open-Sourced basis") when compared to situations/scenarios with regards to other Operating Systems and Applications such as Windows and Linux, along with the relevant/associated "database" and other "office applications".

Just an observation.

Hi All,

According to Terry's earlier post where he mentioned inter alia:

Here is some food for thought; re:

Quote

"This is a significant achievement in the area of ICT solutions aimed at the private sector in Latin America and the Caribbean", said Antonio Ca' Zorzi, the team leader of the ICT4BUS Program. "The ICT4BUS program is helping to develop a portfolio of ICT solutions and services that can be replicated in other countries or sectors. Adopting an Open Source model for the software will enable other organizations in the Region to use and adapt software to the needs of their own micro, small and medium sized firms, whom they serve. The Program also provides funding for cross-border technology transfer of these solutions."

As demonstrated by current ICT4BUS projects, Open Source software is becoming a viable licensing model for software sold as a service rather than packaged solution.

Can anyone read through the "compelling Open-Source Business Model lines" vis-a-vis that of a proprietary one like that of eComStation. This then is what has made the petition by the OS/2 World Foundation (which is ably led by  Kim Haverblad and others) to IBM for the Open-Sourcing of Source-Codes for the OS/2 Operating System all the more interesting; and, an effort that should not be lost sight of and one which must continue to be pressed on.

Just my two cents.  8)

These then are all the more reasons why if OS/2-eComStation are not going to be Open-Sourced; then, the world would probably see the emergence of the Alpha-Codes for an OS/3 Kernel... thus moving the "Community of eComStation users" sooner, rather than later into obsolescence for the lack of modernization.... Why are you quoting yourself and carrying on a one-person conversation? What has any of this to do with Eugene's IRC channel and forum?

Hey "Saijin_Naib";

How about you first telling us what prompted you personally (I am not getting personal here ;D ) to dip you feet is this two man (now three person) discussion. And, for your "kind" information the observation in relation to
QuoteEugene's IRC channel and forum
has to do with the personal, professional and business recognition of the bold efforts of the OS/2 World Foundation led by "Kim Haverblad"; re: the Second Petition Letter to IBM....

Also, it is not a question of not wanting to participate in another discussion forum (as "RobertM" has quite adequately dealt with this issue earlier) and it may just be a question of the desire of obtaining my "bottle of coke" from a single source and that source being this forum.  ;)

Best regards.

Well, the community may be small, but I don't think we should consolidate every resource we have into one conglomerated entity. There should be multiple forums or IRC servers to get information from. Granted, this can segment the community a bit, but it also allows for more freedom and diversity, both of which I feel are valuable trade-offs for the possible impact it could have on regulars here.

Basically, it will supplement OS/2world, not detract from it. Its not like people are going to go sprinting off into the far Russian Interwebs to never be seen again, just that they can have another place to share things in addition to here.

If the process of democratic centralism is to be be understood within the context of the OS/2 World Foundation then I would rather experience a situation where matters pertaining to the development processes concerned with OS/2, OS/3, eCS, VOYAGER, CASSINI.... be addressed within a framework like the one which was alluded to above and here is why; already, there is the "gut" feeling that eComStation will be arriving with certain limitations and it is for these reasons references were made to the Swedish consulting company - SWECO and their most likely usage of the Windows Operating Systems.

In addition to the above, IBM's own effort (despite being the OEM of the OS/2 Source-Codes) in encouraging migration from the OS/2 Operating System to that of the Linux Operating System; thus, the perceived need for "consolidation/centralization" rather than "segmentation". In any case, if there are going to be the kinds of scenarios you are envisaging then how about the single objective of the modernization of the OS and anything else afterwards. Additionally, nothing can be perceived as being wrong or ill-conceived if the "head" knows where the "feet" is taking it and vice-versa (even if it is to the Siberian Dessert or deep inside the Amazon Jungle).  ;)

This is just my two cents worth.  8)

SAB.
