http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3321 Here is a review of the Asus EEE Box. I think it has the Intel Atom cpu. Could one install eCS onto it?  ???

I see no issue other than the potential issue with Audio (hopefully the newer Uniaud HDA builds by Paul will support) NIC (XWLan maybe), Display (Pano for sure), and lastly, lack of CD drive.

Thanks for the information.  8)  Perhaps a newer version of eCS where one can still or boot from an USB drive or sd card (which the EEE PC has a slot for).  8)

I do believe that if possible, the installer routine should be able to boot and install from USB Mass storage. I also believe that a more powerful version of MiniLVM should be used with some features from DFSEE so that we can make use of drives/media that otherwise would require DFSEE loaded as well. Additionally, FAT32 support in the installer, as well as NTFS, HPFS, JFS, whatever.

Guys, just a quick notice - perhaps interesting to you:
Some weeks ago, at the developer workshop in Dusseldorf, Germany, Roderick Klein from mensys stated that they (Mensys) are thinking seriously about releasing a special EEE-version of eComStation 2.0 (once it's out) that comes on a solid-state disk ready to run for EEE's... see the next VOICE newsletter (once that one is out now...) for more rumours and news about 2.0 etc...

Cheers,
Thomas

I am definitely looking forward to eCS 2.0 if the rumors of a version on a solid state disk is true.  ;D I will try it on my EEE PC from Asus.  8)

I still dont think that should be a solution. You shouldnt have to disk-swap to install, thats just an unnecessary pain in the ass. The installer needs to be more versatile, or how I really feel, useful.

With the size of sold state drives going up, one could put the whole install on a single disc/flash drive/sd card. Perhaps one could run eCS from the SD card instead of booting from it?  ???

I think it would be large enough to put the eCS install onto?  ???

Here is a 16 gb sd card. One could probably run eCS from this SD card?  ???

eCS can be used on a Asus EEE PC.

Installing eCS (or even OS/2) on a IDE connected Solid State Disk is no problem at all.

I agrgee in regards to needed improvements for the installer.
Nevertheless, the idea behind the eCS2.0 solid-state IDE disk from Mensys is, that you put it in and there you go: Turn on - done. No installer anymore... :)

Just to let you know:

If there will be an eCS espacially for the EEE PC than it will come on SD-card, not on an solid state disk. The solid state disk of the 701 series is fixed at the mainboard, so there is no chance to change it. The 900, 901 and 10000 series have both, an onboard fixed SSD of 4 GB + another (8 GB for XP, 12 GB for Linux) one that can be removed.

Sound: I tested the new build of the uniaud 1.9.4 direct from Paul Smedley with the EEE. It works - but - I am not able to change the loudness anymore. I already sent Paul the log files of uniaud. So may be he can find a solution.

Meanwhile there are Howtos availiable at Hobbes to:

a.) install eCs 2.0 on SD card that can be used with EEE (made by Ed Durrant)
b.) install eCs 2.0 on the internal SSD of the 701 Model (made by myself  ;))

Since the weekend now the "last" thing is now working for me: WLAN. But before telling the users Howto get this work or update my HOWTO at hobbes I still have to talk to the GENMAC team, because the WLAN driver is a "hacked GENMAC".

So - this is what it is like now:

I can:

Surf the net via LAN or WLAN, hear Music and Internetradio via PM123, watch and listen to Videos using Warpvision, watch Youtube Videos using Firefox and the updated 7.0 plugin, use open office, send and receive mails via Thunderbird an so on and so on......  :D

Thats quite Okay, this small thing is now fully usable to/with eComstation and it is that quick....

Hi Sigurd,

that is more than GOOD news. Wow!
I'm pretty sure that Paul will figure out what the cause for the volume trouble is, although he usually tends to say "I'm no developer, I'm just porting the ALSA stuff..." :))

Regarding the "eCS on SSD"... perhaps Roderick erratically said "solid-state-disk" while actually referringto an SD-card... not sure. Perhaps we need some more information from Mensys (...whenever that will be available...)

Cheers

Hello Sigurd, are you using Panorama for video or SNAP accelerated?

Also, does ACPI work properly for Suspend/resume/hibernate/restart/shut down? I know for my desktop it doesn't work properly :C
